The friend I learned it from sang it to "Wha Wouldnae Fit for Charlie". She learned it from a former tatie houwker. She also learned:
"Hi hi the tattie houkers gang tae the harvest ball.
Some of them have big fat asses, some of them have none at   all."

For 42nd, use "tattie houkers". My dad used to start to sing that one every time anyone mentioned the Black Watch, aka 42nd Highlanders!
He said that a tattie houker was a potato-peeling person. Needless to say, he was in another regiment - I don't think the Black Watch themselves sing the "tattie houker" version!

The tune is their march and quite well known. I can hum it, play it, and have even used it once for a dance with our NW side, but I can't remember its name. (I always call it "Tattie Houkers"). It is also used as the tune for the Eynsham morris dance "The March Past" according to the notes on "Plain Capers".

The website for the regiment may at least be able to provide the name for the tune.

A "tattie-howker" or "houker" is someone who works lifting potatoes. My colleague at work here, who is from an agricultural background, further asserts that it specifically refers to the removal of the tatties from the soil after it has been dug.

It is hard and back-breaking work.

Which must be why the practice of recruiting schoolkids to do it was widespread. In the North-East of Scotland, the Autumn mid-term break from school is widely known as the "Tattie Holidays". I get this from my brother who has lived up that direction for the last 15 years.

It really has nothing to do with potato-peelings - wholesale or retail.

Matt McGinn uses "howkin'" in "Coorie Doon" and also in "Manyura Manyah" to refer to coal-mining...

Cheers

Steven

Hi, Lady Jean - up above, you posted partial lyrics to a parody, and Tuggy Mac asked if you could post the whole thing. You also mentioned "Wha Wouldnae Fit for Charlie" - could you post that one for me, please?
Is the tune different from the one we have in the Digital Tradition (click to play)?
Thanks.

In the north of Ireland in October we would have skipped a couple of weeks of school to go Tattie Hokin`. Ten bob [shillings] a week was a god-send in the late 1940s. Ard Mhacha.
