THE GIRL FROM IPAMENA
(English words by Norman Gimbel)

Tall and tan and young and lovely,
The girl from Ipanema goes walking,
And when she passes, each one she passes goes, "Ah."

When she walks she's like a samba
That swings so cool and sways so gentle.
That when she passes, each one she passes goes, "Ah."

Oh, but I watch her so sadly.
How can I tell her I love her?
Yes, I would give my heart gladly,
But each day when she walks to the sea,
She looks straight ahead, not at me.

Tall and tan and young and lovely,
The girl from Ipanema goes walking,
And when she passes, I smile,
But she doesn't see.
She just doesn't see.
No, she doesn't see.

Original words by Vincius De Moraes
English words by Norman Gimbel
Music by the incomparable Antonio Carlos Jobim, 1963

Stan Getz recorded The Girl from Ipanema in late 50s or early 60s but what was the name of girl the that did the singing? It was she that really made the song.

At the last minute, against her will, they pulled in Estrud Gilberto. And the world has never been the same since. She thought she was a housewife.

One of my LPs devotes most of the back to the storey. Both Getz and her husband wanted her on the recording but she didn't think of herself as a singer. Basically, they just tricked her. I don't remember how. That sort of thing was not uncommon then.

Anybody heard the parody "The Girl with Emphysema", by Worcester MA songwriter Art Tebbets? Wickedly funny, especially if (like me) you are a smug non-smoker....

The Girl with Emphysema

Short, and fat, and smelly and lazy

The Girl with Emphysema goes bowling

And when she wheezes each one who sees her goes "ahhh"

She quivers and shakes her flesh so roughly

it's like an earthquake that when she passes each

seismograph needle goes "ahhh"

oh, how I watch her so sadly.

how, how can I tell her I loathe her?

yes, I would turn my gaze quickly,

but each day when she has to go pee,

her path thunders right in front of me.

In the television program The Amazing Race, where teams of two race against each other to reach set destinations around the globe, one of the checkpoints was to find the Girl from Ipanema on a particular beach. It was the same beach and the actual girl who inspired the song. Even after all these years, she looked pretty darn good! I can't recall what the beach looked like.

While we are on this thread does anyone know the chords for this? I used to know them years ago but cannot now remember them (except that there are augmented chords etc)

Translated from the original Portuguese, the meaning of the song is so beautiful, it goes something like this:

Olha que coisa mas nina e cheia de graca
de sol Ipanema ...

I have seen a thing more lovely and full of grace
under the sun of Ipanema ...
