Subject: BS: Football world cup From: Wolfgang Date: 13 Oct 03 - 08:09 AM The last time there was a football world championship there were at least three threads with many posts. So I think this time there should be at least one post about it. Have you watched too? I'm sure all the lovers of German football far and near (Come all ye...) will applaud yesterday's win of the German team in the world cup tournament. The team won six out of six games and scored more than 4 goals on the average. It was a splendid performance in my eyes. Wolfgang |

Subject: RE: BS: Football world cup From: artbrooks Date: 13 Oct 03 - 08:46 AM Sorry, GUEST, but you are in error. The German women's team beat Sweden in the finals to take the World Cup, after eliminating the defending champions USA in the semifinal game. |

Subject: RE: BS: Football world cup From: GUEST Date: 13 Oct 03 - 09:17 AM Of course the _real_ football World Cup is going on right now in Australia. And England might even win. |

Subject: RE: BS: Football world cup From: michaelr Date: 13 Oct 03 - 07:27 PM I have no idea what's happening in Australia right now, but I watched every game that was shown here in USA of the Women's World Cup. There were some brilliant performances, many stellar goals, and overall a very exciting and professional tournament. To be sure, the womens' teams of Brazil, Germany, Argentina, Nigeria etc. are not yet playing at the skill level of their male counterparts (who have been at it for decades), but the US women (who won the last World Cup against China) are a lot better than the US men! Not only does womens' soccer (sorry, football count, but I'd say it is essential. The female players, and foremost Mia Hamm and the rest of Team USA, are role models for young girls whose value and influence cannot be overestimated in these Britney Spears-dominated times. Did you know that girls who play sports have an 80% reduced risk of teen pregnancy? I'm looking forward to seeing more womens' soccer in the Olympics next year. Cheers, Michael |

Subject: RE: BS: Football world cup From: Den Date: 13 Oct 03 - 07:51 PM Firstly congratulations Wolfgang for your nations win. I watched and was impressed by much of the football played by the womens' teams. I was very impressed with the Germans and the way they went about their business. Some very nice passing and positional play. The Swedes played very well also but against the Germans they were just a bit lacking in the final pass. Well done USA for hosting the competition and providing some great facilities and some great performances on the field. Well done too to Canada who made up for technique with some great heart. All in all a very enjoyable tournament and worthy winners. Not many yellow cards either that I saw and did anyone get sent off? Den |

Subject: RE: BS: Football world cup From: Wolfgang Date: 14 Oct 03 - 05:06 AM I knew there would be someone who assumed without further thought or knowledge that a gender neutral language should by default mean men. I liked what I saw much more than the last couple of times I have watched our men playing. Women's football in Germany still has not the standing of men's football. I only could listen in the radio to the final and they interrupted for the news when the extra time had just started. They wouldn't dare to do that in a men's final. At least, for the first time there will be a confetti parade for a women's team coming home. And, also for the first time, the president of the German football associations has skipped watching a men's game (against Turkey) and has watched the women's final instead. Wolfgang |
