Django - Fiddle?

I've been extensively listening to this fine ?guitarist? and I find that many of his numbers are mostly fiddleplaying. Is Django known for his fiddleplaying as well as his guitar playing??

That's the great Stephane Grappelli (sometimes spelled "Grappelly") on violin.

I saw Grappelli, age 80, in 1988, and he was as wonderful as ever on violin and piano. I have often wondered why his name was spelled "Grappelly" on the earlier works, and later, "Grappelli." On this page (by Jim Moss), I found:

What is interesting is the spelling of his name, Grappelli or Grappelly. If you look on the old Django records you see Grappelly yet if you look at later solo projects you see Grappelli. I asked once why the two different spellings of his name, to which he said it was Italian and French. That is what he said and I didn't push it.

Grapelli did some recorded jazz with Yehudi Menuhin (sp?) who was a top Classical Concert Violinist. And I seem to remember also famous for "The Hot Canary" - from the 1950's - or was that Grapelli?.

I had the pleasure of seeing Grappelli in the 70's, wish I could have seen Django!
I have a video tape (on loan) of the 2002 "Samois sur Seine" festival in France. The headline stars, Bireli Lagrene, Patrick Saussois, The Rosenberg Trio and an American band "Pearl Django" are all tremendous, but the real stars are the guys on the campsite, caught on camera, jamming together with gypsy guitars, double bass and fiddles.
There's so much talent lying around, undiscovered.

Another great discovery on the tape is a young German guitarist called Joscho Stephan. I'm still scratching my head in wonder.

And when he played along with Yehudi Menuhin, it was Menuhin who looked nervous. He just couldn't keep up - I don't mean with the notes, with the imagination.

Yes, Django played fiddle and his partner, vioinist Stephane Grappelli, also played pretty good piano.

Yes McGrath! I remember seeing them on "Parkinson" I think it was, and I think there may have been a documentary as well. Think it was mid 70`s? As I was an exclusively classical musician at the time the direct comparison between the wonderful fluidity of Grapelli`s swing and Yehudi Menuhin`s stunted arpeggios and mechanical scales was the start in me of a whole new respect for musicians "outside" the classical world, and that in no way takes away from my respect of Menhuin`s classical playing. As well as being a great chat show, I have memories of some wonderful musical "moments" in Parkinson during that era. Wonder if the BBC do a compilation of Parkinson "Golden Moments"? I would have that for Christmas!!

As an aside, Grapelli once told a story about his friend Django, I think it was on "Parkinson". In the 30's when Django was quite well off he was persuaded to buy a car, he didn't really trust, or like them ( he was more used to horses) but got himself a maseratti and drove around for a few days, then it ran out of petrol........ so he just left it by the side of the road, I doubt if it's still there.

You know, jumping over to the thread, 6 reasons not to buy CDs, here is a great reason TO buy CDs! Django plays fiddle? I wonder if thats him I'm listening to on the music I have? I'll never know. Maybe I can go find out who does what on the internet? Gee, I wish I had a CD so I could read whos doing what.

I have a couple of tracks with Django playing fiddle. Check out the website www.hotclub.co.uk - join the forum and ask the same question again. In the main it was grapelli who played violin. There are tracks with Eddie South on aswell. It depends when the record was recorded.
I am having a guitar lesson tomorrow with Diz Disley!! Dave do you remember Steve's partner, Denny playing with Grappelli? Or Steve with Django's brother joseph?
