Subject: BS: Sunspot problems From: Arnie Date: 31 Oct 03 - 04:49 AM Anyone else have problems caused by the recent sunspot activity? I found last night that it's knocked out most of my favourite satellite tv signals - including the footie channels! As there is a huge mass of electromagnetic particles yet to hit the earth, I suspect things will get a bit more chaotic on the communications and power front - blackouts are forecast for various parts of the world. On the upside, we are supposed to get a fantastic display of the Northern Lights further south in the UK - I heard of a display over York on Weds but ain't seen nothing on the south coast yet. That reminds me: TV Quizmaster "Where would you most likely see the Northern Lights in Britain?" Contestant: "Blackpool" - and I'm told that this is true!! |
Subject: RE: BS: Sunspot problems From: Amos Date: 31 Oct 03 - 09:20 AM Well--I've noticed a singular degradaton in the quality of posting on the Mudcat since those sunspots started blasting. Could just be me, though.... A |

Subject: RE: BS: Sunspot problems From: Bill D Date: 31 Oct 03 - 06:28 PM I have cable TV, and the usually great picture has been slightly fuzzy/snowy on the GOOD channels, and downright lousy on some of the stranger channels at the high end. I guess the reception that the cable company gets is degraded BEFORE they feed it to us. |
Subject: RE: BS: Sunspot problems From: Don Firth Date: 31 Oct 03 - 07:54 PM Can't say that I've noticed much of anything. I'm told that the northern lights are visible, but we live pretty close to downtown Seattle, so the backlight probably washes them out. TV reception (cable) is okay so far. The clock radio gets a little hashy every now and then, but it sometimes does that when our upstairs neighbor moves around her apartment. Don Firth |
Subject: RE: BS: Sunspot problems From: John J Date: 01 Nov 03 - 07:02 PM As a practicing radio amateur using mainly HF (short wave), I can confirm that current solar activity is playing hell with the bands. I think it was Tuesday this week, HF communication was all but impossible. The lower frequency bands are very noisy, probably for the same reason. John |
