I understand that beer is a national institution in Europe. So, in an effort to get a serious thread going, what is and who makes the best commercial beer in the whole world? Forget micro-breweries and homemade. We're talkin' commercial--comes in a bottle or can, buy it at the generic jar store (liquor outlet). This could include stout, beer, ale. So?

Red Hook ESB for my money. Also Sierra Nevada Pale Bock, but that's almost impossible to find.

I used to be able to get a bottled English beer -- I think it was called Old Chester -- that was the only malt beverage I'd evcer had that could be classified as psychotropic . . . but that's not PRECISELY the same as good.

Wait I DO know one thing about beer. Mudcatters bring it to Mudcat Gatherings and leave a lot of it at our house when they go home, I guess because they think they should not drink it all up in front of my pastor hubby, so Gatherings are a good time for us, especially AFTER!

Nah ! One of the best things to come out of England is Sheppard Neane's "Spifire Bitter". Sharp taste and texture. Reasonable strength.

But each to thier own choice.

Ballard Bitter.

It vanished from the stores, and even though I looked for it desparately, it appeared that it had been discontinued. Couldn't figure that, because it's great beer. Some folks who are into "lite" beers didn't like it because it socks you in the teeth and puts hair on your chest, so I figured Red Hook had wimped out. Not so! As a result of this thread, I did some heavy googling, and discovered that it's still out there!!! The Powers that Be at Red Hook breweries felt that if they were going to market it nationally, not enough people would know who, what, or where Ballard is. Actually, it's the northeast quadrant of Seattle, where Red Hook got started. So they changed the name to Red Hook IPA. Dunno what "IPA" stands for. But IT STILL EXISTS! I've seen it in the stores but I didn't know that's what it was!

IPA = "India Pale Ale" A brew designed to survive the shippment of beer from 'Blighty' to India to hit the thirst of "Tommy".

To survive in palletable form, it had :-

1/. A Heavey Alchol Content.

2/. Was highly hopped (hop oils being a preservative.

The classic IPA was very bitter and sharp, with a good body (thick texture) and had most of the maltose and sucrose fermented out.

Charringtons (London Brewers) did a very good and sharp real version (cask ale), and I hope still do. Tho I have not been on the beer in London for 10 years or so !

Mind you thier Burton brewed version "Bass IPA" is still available in South Wales. - Cos I've just sunk three pints.

Elephant!

It's Carlsberg's (Denmark) strongest lager. At 7.5% alcohol, here in the States it has to be labeled "Malt Liquor". They used to export it from Denmark, but for a couple of years now it's been brewed under license by Labatt's in Canada.

If you like the taste of classic lager, such as Beck's or Heineken or the original, Pilsner Urquell, Elephant kicks it up a few notches, but it's still well-balanced, by which I mean it's neither too sweet nor too bitter.

I'm having one as I type!

Okay. I tend to favor Brador and Ex but My number #1 is Molson Canadian! I betcha Don Cherry dont' drink nothin else but Canadian, eh? May I menshun that American beer stinks?

However I will take what I can get if I am like short know what I mean? Any port in a storm, but make mine beer. Port is too sweet.

I have drank more beer at one time thatn ang9ne else I know not 3excapeting mty Brohter Don (the idiot) who clamie s he can outdrink me but he lies! Like a rug.

Tried quite a number in my travels and stays across Canada, but I have to go with Keith's at the moment. Started out with good old home brew ( malt beer)then to Labette's 50 and others. Right now I have a Bud in my eye ( 5% Canadian). Makes a big difference from the American Bud.
   Bottom line. If it's free I'll drink it. If I'm buying, Keith's from Nova Scotia, Blue or Bub.

Don Firth: Ballard Bitter might be Red Hook ESB (Extra Special Bitter) rather than their IPA. I don't remember BB as being as hoppy as the IPA. I have an old "Ballard Bitter/Ya Shure, ya betcha" t-shirt around somewhere. Maybe I'll grow back into it someday.

I had a Bridgeport Ebenezer Holiday Ale (Portland, Oregon) for an afternoon snack and a Sam Smith Oatmeal Stout with supper. Why drink Guiness when you can get a good stout?

so far, ClaireBear, Gareth and Don Firth have mentioned really decent beer....(well, Anchor Steam, too, yeah...sorta)....most of the rest is just 'well-known beer'! No..being famous does NOT necessarily mean good..*grin*

There IS no one 'best', just like there is no best song. It's what you're in the mood for...and there are amazingly good choices on most categories..
Maybe Sam Smith's Ol Brewery Pale Ale, or Orval Trappist Ale or Thomas Hardy's or the almost impossible to find Celis Grand Cru or something like Riggwelter Ale from England would be right up there at the top...along with 40-50 others..

I have 'about' 800 bottles in my collection, all emptied by ME in the last 25 years since I discovered GOOD beer. My first really good beer was a German DoppleBock, and soon after that I had a New Albion Porter from the first American micro-brewery to start up in ages! (1977, I think)(that bottle is probably a real collectors item)...and away we went!

I love the weird beer/ale (Red Beer and Bios Copper Ale)from Belgium, the dark Bocks from Germany, and the lovely things with LOTS of hops from various new micro breweries in the USA, where you CAN now get great beer if you're willing to look! (and in Washington State, or California, it's easier.)

I like the Guinness, sure. But tasting it in Ireland sort of spoiled me for drinking it anywhere else. It really IS better there.

For a good drinking beer though, you can't beat Keith's.

Samuel Smith's. Only thing better than what comesin the bottle is what comes out of the tap, where you can get it on draught (sadly, not in the States).
The Chandos pub in Trafalgar Square has the Extra Reserve Bitter, and Samuel Smith's CIDER. Hoo boy.
In bottles here I can get most of them. I like the organic lager, and the pale ale.
Have been getting more of a taste for ales and lagers and pilsners, recently, for some reason...

These days in England, "Real Ale" is vitually synonomous with "Draught Bitter" - OK I know that we have Milds, Olds, and Stouts as well. The point that I wanted to make is that before WW1, the most popular beer drunk have probably have been Porter which was somewhere between an Old and a Stout. Wartime shortages were responsible for Breweries producing IPA (which needed less barley) as a draught rather than bottled beer. The drink caught on as did a lighter bottled equivalent - pale (or light) ale. For the drinkers who preferred a darker beer, draught mild, and bottled brown ale were produced. Most of these are still available - and several breweries produce a Porter.

Does any one know of a brewery which still produces a (southern style) Bottled Brown Ale ? - I'm not including Newcastle Brown Ale which is a rather different drink. It used to be wonderful in casseroles, welsh rarebits and had many uses - a brown and bitter was a much tastier drink than a light and bitter. I always used keep a quart bottle (with a rubber screw top) around - it lasted for ages.

OK, There are so many- differing moods, differing locales denote a variety of bevvies. Samuel Smiths: Wonderful Stuff. An old roommate & I referred to it a "payday beer" because it was the only time we could afford it. About $10.00 a six-pack in the late 80's- available then only in a local deli (I know we were getting a screwing). Guinness: Oh yeah. My "go to" beer when out & about. Bass Ale: Usually in the 'fridge when found on sale. The Belgians: Too many to mention, but the ones that are readily available (here anyway) are Chimay, Orval, Duvel (wicked stuff that) Belgian beers are marvelously complex- so many varieties. The Germans: Disclosure Statement: I worked as a bartender in a couple of different bars in Germany (Heidelberg & Berlin) and have to recuse myself from discussions involving German beers. The only thing I have to say is that it is WRONG WRONG WRONG to put a slice of Lemon in a Hefeweizen. Lemon slices are only for Kristallweizen. Also, Hefeweizen should only be served from the bottle, poured properly into its specified glass. Hefeweizen from a keg is somehow not right. End of rant.

American beer has an undeserved reputation for being bad. Some is, but Coor's is nice when one is really thirsty and prepared to drink a few dozen. The light Coor's should go back to the horse it came from, but the other ain't bad.

well...to be fair, tastes differ! If you are simply drinking for quenching thist on a limited budget, I can see some of those (we used to drink "Canadian Ace" in college ..$.89 a 6-pack..but I can't say I LIKED it...)

*I just had, last night, a bottle of Creemore Springs lager from Ontario..and it was really decent, though I guess I have just moved away from lagers as my taste has switched to beer with more flavor & hops. Creemore is made 'right', without additives or pasteurization, and I commend them.

Ballantine is still being made- you'll find it often next to the "Malt Liquors" (Colt 45, Olde English 800 & the like) in many stores. Genesee Cream Ale is a guilty pleasure. Available for under USD$10.00 for a 30-pack in upstste New York. Actually decent beer. The Genesee 12 Horse Ale is/was a good one. Is that one still around?

New Albion! You damn bethca, that was great beer. We were fortunate enough to play a number of parties at the brewery and wash our throats in beers brewed especailly for the occasion. They all had polite names, but I remember the brewmaster referrring to one batch as Ol' Dick in the Dirt, and another as Ol' Toe Sucker.

That bottle is worth something to a collector. I'm luck enough to have a t-shirt and a beer case from back then, both of them clearly showing Sal Guardino's beautiful label art.

When the brewery shut down, the equipment went to Hopland, CA as the original brewhouse at Mendocino Brewing, makers of Red Tail Ale. That venerable micro succumed to an Indian mega brewing conglomerate in the 90's. Same name. Different tasing beer. Pity.

Hey, Bill D: I ain't a connoisseur; just a workin' stiff who likes the odd beer. I am aware that the bottled Euro stuff can be pretty good. I've had the odd bit of horsepiss in my life, and I would defer to anyone else's taste when it comes to beer (or wine for that matter). I used to think Muscatel was OK.

Oh, hell, I used to dring Lucky Lager in Korea, but I was young and innocent then.

I didn't say I *drank* 'em; I was askin' about 'em.

Last good lager was Atlas Praeger, best buy lager, Atlas Praeger lager beer. Brewed in Warsaw, Illinois by the Warsaw Brewing Company. Gone but not forgotten.

The same here for a beer called O'Keefe Lager. I passed a few gallons of that in what I recall of my younger days. I have deja vu at times when I think I'm still passin' it decades later. I've gone off beer. At my age, I have to pee six times a night, and I hope to get out of bed for at least five of 'em. So, to echo Rapaire, forgotten, but not gone.

My favourite........Fullers Honey Dew. I originally found this at a mini beer festival in the FILO pub in Hastings ( Fullers is a London brewer ) and have been happily quaffing it ever since. Then Sainsbury's started selling it it bottles (hurrah, I live in east London and there's only one Fullers pub nearby ) and I found out it was organic!?

But if I can get it... Froach Heather ale ( which as it's name suggests is made with heather rather than hops ). I like the way it doesn't get you roaring drunk, you just suddenly realise that your legs have ceased to function in tandem.........

Bud IS that bad..on a hot day, on a cold day, on ANY day...it is the paradigm example of what has given American beer a bad name in the world. Bill D, it's a clear indication of your artistic personality that you have happened upon The Best Beer you can get in Ontario. Creemore it is!

But I'm kind of amazed that you have some--is it sold there? Or did someone bring it to you special? Cause there is one thing that separates Creemore from all the other fine micro-, mini- and designer-brewery products. (Designer beers are fancy-label, small quantity beers actually produced by major breweries--say no more). They make a fine lager, and INSIST ON IT BEING SOLD FRESH. They allegedly go to every retailer and pub that carries their product, once a week, remove any unsold stock, and replace it with fresh. That's why it sells for $2.65/500 ml bottle in the LCBO, and why it's worth it. Fresh beer is so much better!

That is particularly a nice quality at pubs, where it is less expensive than your Guinness and other imports. Bill you really must come up and experience some quality time at a few well-polished horizontal-woodwork establishments with me. May I suggest the Stewart Park Festival in Perth next July, and I will introduce you to the sublime delights of "Ontario assisted suicide", available at Fiddleheads pub: their special poutine made with Guinness-laced gravy, washed down with draft Creemore. (Single malt chaser for the health fanatics).

"What's poutine?", I hear you asking as your nostrils perk up.
Why it is naught but the very best French Fries (as we still refer to them, bound as we are to tradition and multiculturalism), deeply soaked in a mixture of the aforementioned specially annointed gravy, and melted cheese curds, served in this case on a lovely ceramic platter, in other cases in a styrofoam box.

Oh, man. We're not allowed to spend a fin on this delicacy very often...(clutches chest and starts to topple in dramatic slow motion)

I bet you're wondering how poutine came to Ontario. The food, not the former prime minister, (as of yesterday) who is another story for anodder day, dere. Maybe you're not wondering, but tough. I'm drinkin' IPA (can't afford Creemore, pls send $$), so you're gonna hear about it. Scratch that, I finished the IPA (Wells, a good party bottle but it goes flat too quick after you open it...not like that luscious Creemore) and am now into something euphemistically labelled "STRONG PREMIUM LAGER".

It all goes back to another time and place, the fifties in Montreal. Those were happy days, mon ami. Brador in the brasseries, (an unheard of 6.5% active ingredients) and a chipwagon by every curb, liberally doling out the poutine to the happily inebriated habitants of the brasseries. "In a slow week, I'm in here seven days," one of them said to me.

It seemed like the bon temps would roulant pour tout le journee, mais non. The owners of the brick and mortar restaurants were not tres contente avec le status quo, huh uh. Many of them had interesting connections both with the municipal council and with some local citizens lacking official titles but with certain tres persuavis ways about them.

That is why, one sad summer, the length and breadth of Isle de Montreal, hundreds of old stepvans, many of which hadn't moved in years, were having old tires pumped up or in extreme cases replaced, plywood skirting removed, and batteries charged, for their last fateful voyages.

Finally, with a last wave to the tearful children and the forever hungry brasserie patrons who gathered on the corners to mark the end of the good old days, the converted bread and milk trucks lurched off down the 2 & 20 and finally swayed across the long bridge over Deux Montagnes and rolled west to ply their toothsome trade somewhere in Ontario.

Onward surged the ragged fleet of entrepeneurial spudcutters.   Many a venerable Grumman Stepmaster and Chev Curbside came to rest in a gas station parking lot, wherever its running gear heaved its last dying sigh of metal-on-metal, in little Ontario towns with funny names like Marmora and Moonbeam, and within hours were open for business and becoming part of the day-to-day life of Ontario the Beautiful...and thus were we introduced to the food of the gods.

Except in The Glebe, a tony Ottawa neighbourhood where they sicced bylaws on them, and occasionally resorted to vigilante action to keep their sidewalks respectable and cholesterol-free...figures.   

This saga was chronicled in John Steinbeck's great novel "The Gravy of Wrath".

well, if the painful truth be told, I have some Creemore because it was (shhh) abandoned at the Getaway. Being one of the last to leave each year, and having this BIG van, I get to haul off lost & found. I 'thought' it was purchased locally by members of the Shellbacks, but I don't know that for sure. In any case, I ended up with 4 bottles, and have 2 left.

You shore do paint a fine picure of the good life in Ontario! (I do like the single malt chaser concept!) It's interesting that the ONLY time I was ever in Canada was to buy beer..(in 1981, think)...we had been in the 1000 Islands of the St. Lawrence, and just drove across the river and searched out a beer store...got that Brador and 4-5 other fine brews and headed home.

Well, at the border, the customs guy asked "anything to declare?"......"ummm...beer", I said.."how MUCH beer?" "ummm..several cases"..."Maybe we better take a look"....so I open the trunk, which was STUFFED with STUFF from camping and traveling, and I started pulling out beer from every nook & cranny... I guess my candor and the growing line behind us were enough, 'cause he just said..."ok...that looks about right..go ON!"

I was just learning about beer then, but I did enjoy the fruits of that trip for many weeks!

Now ..poutine, I have heard of, but never had the dubious pleasure of...but it sure sounds like something I have created accidently from various leftovers! So...I will indeed contemplate combining music, wood and several of the 4 basic food groups (alcohol, grease, sugar, chocolate) sometime!

Bill D: I seldom take issue with people on inconsequential matters. However, what you have written is a posting that requires clarification. Brador is a high-alcohol content beer. It is not a tasty beer. It is not a friendly beer. It is not a good burping beer. It has the charm and personality of a sidewinder. I had a few in my younger days (cases that is--(had a few of those cases too)) and it gives one a terrible hangover, kidneys that hurt for days, a pecker that regrets being attached to ones body because it thinkds its one function in life is to channel rotten urine, and . . . . I tend to drink out of a quart tankard - mainly because it saves queuing at the bar so much - and having to push my way out of crowded singarounds etc and also the fact that a single pint won't last me through a half-hour club spot. As I'm a thirsty sod, I prefer to drink "session beers" which are 4% or under - here's a list of some of my favourites.

Young's (Wandsworth) ordinary bitter
McMullen's (Hertford) AK
Adnam's (Southwold) ordinary bitter
Shepherd Neame bitter
Ridley's (Chelmsford)IPA
Fuller's Chiswick bitter - I wish they still made their "Hock" it was like a light porter - very moor-ish
Larkin's (Chiddingstone, Kent) bitter - lovely flavour, but only 3.4%
Harvey's (Lewes) Sussex Bitter
Brakspear's (Henley) ordinary bitter
Caledonian Brewery Deuchars - one of the very pale bitters with the fruity flavour of "Cascade" hops
And I even enjoy a pint of Courage Best Bitter !

Beers don't need to be strong to be tasty - it sometimes annoys me that many specialist "Real Ale" pubs only seem to want to stock the ones which are 5% or over.

Moosehead is still with us as well. N.S. has some great micro brews, Garrisn Red is excellent as all the beer made by Propeller. The Sharp Angus mentioned above is also a micro brew that is very good or was, I am not sure if it is still made. Odd thing is that the Government liquor stores do not recognize the good local beers and shelve them with forgein beers..odd eh ?
   The best large brewery beer is Keith's.. an excellent India Pale.

The other week Linda and I had a day trip to France and ended up in a bar in the Old Town of Boulogne. I'm not usuually keen on french beer, but we drank a draught brew called "Angelus" which was wonderful. In spite of the fact that it was a lager style beer and was presumably served on top pressure - we had to pop back for another one later.

The "Screw Bush" part of this thread reminds of the fact that when he was over here recently, he made up north to Blair's constituency Sedgfield in County Durham. The pub/restaurant that they dined at, serves quite a list of excellent real ales, but of course he didn't sample them as he's teetotal.

I like Keiths. I am favourably predisposed towards anything Maritime, and this stuff definitely grows on you. Plus it has the unique virtue of getting cheaper as you go farther east.

Screw Bush? A job best left to the true professionals, no doubt ...but hey, after last weekend I'll talk beer!

Had my debut with True North Premium Virgin Beer, and much to my surprise --- what a treat! So smooth, no bitter aftertaste, even has a bit of a satisfying "kick" to it. Makes Molson Ex taste like shoe polish, and Coors Light taste even MORE like watered down .... (never mind)

Beary impressive, especially to wash down the season's debut with a pair of snowshoes!

Harveys is THE BEST SINGING BEER IN ENGLAND and they have the certificates to prove it!!!
They do a cracking bottled brown as well.
I love Gales HSB draught but it is real falling down fluid as is Harveys Old. What a way to go though :-))))))
Youngs winter warmer used to be nice but definately not for quaffing, do they still make it?
