Subject: Lyr Req: HELP! Vin or Vyn Garbut Song From: wilbyhillbilly Date: 12 Dec 03 - 03:39 AM Trying to track down this Artiste, apparently sung folkie songs in Greece in the early eighties, we think he came from "up North" (UK) somewhere, one of the songs we are trying to trace has a chorus that goes something like this, In the land of three rivers I'm longing to be Where the Tyne, Wear and Tees Meet the North rolling sea. He used to accompany himself with acoustic guitar, and sometimes played TWO penny whistles at the same time, (must be a clue). ANY info would be much appreciated. Wilby |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: HELP! Vin or Vyn Garbut Song From: GUEST,Pete Betts Date: 12 Dec 03 - 01:12 PM Banjo Ray - Try James Galway Fiddler ,if you ever as you say "I plan to put this album to mp3 format when I can borrrow a turntable". - gissa shout - I love to have a copy of the contents of That L.P. Incidentally John North starts with "Well me name etc." The "well " bit helps him get some balance for delivering the rest of the line - Honest!! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: HELP! Vin or Vyn Garbut Song From: wilbyhillbilly Date: 12 Dec 03 - 04:32 PM Fiddler, are you sure that the "John North" song is the one with the lyrics I put up at the start of this thread, cos I just saw a song on the CD I ordered called the Land of the Three Rivers, and John North is not listed, looks as though I've dropped a clanger although I'm sure I won't be disappointed with the content. Subject: Lyr Add: LAND OF THREE RIVERS/JOHN NORTH (Garbutt) From: GUEST,MCP Date: 13 Dec 03 - 07:02 AM Here are the words from one of Vin's recordings. I haven't played the Teesside Fettlers' version to check, but one of my folders seems to show that there are only minor textual variations from Vin's own rendering. (In those high tech production days, by way of sleeve-notes, my tape of Ring Of Iron came with the record sleeve!). The proper title, I think, is The Land of Three Rivers, but on the sleeve it appears as shown below, with John North in parentheses. I haven't got time to do it now but I'll put the tune up later. Mick THE LAND OF THREE RIVERS (John North) (Vin Garbutt) Ah my name is John North from the South of the Forth, In the Land of Three Rivers I dwell. In the steelworks and pits I've worked with me mates, Not a bad word against them I'll tell. They're the best bunch of lads and I'll tell you for why, If they thought it would help you they'd jump in the Tyne. Chorus: In the Land of Three Rivers I'm longing to be, Where the Tyne, Wear and Tees meet the North's rolling sea. From Carlisle to Dover, from Bristol to Hull And every town in between I'm known in them all by my accent and gall And friendship to pauper and queen. I've got lots of friends, aye, but still not enough I'm a means to their end when the going get rough. Chorus In centuries gone our ancestral homes Were prey to the Romans and Danes. But Hadrian knew and Odin did too The North-East was no place for games. They tried to enslave us but all efforts failed While the strength of Saint Hilda and Aidan prevailed. Chorus I work hard, I play hard, as hard as I toil And I drink the best ale in the land. My roots nestle deep in Northumbrian soil, The branches akin outstretched hands. When loneliness takes you and dampens your song If you meet up with John North you'll not go far wrong. Chorus x2 Source: Vin Garbutt LP: Eston California |

Roseberry looks oer the village of great ayton the seas of the flowers make the fields look layden. as i see the trees in the wind it takes my breath away how beautiful the countryside is in may. the heather spreads oer like a purple carpet. i see green stripes of the closed down market.
