Subject: Help: Starting an Internet Radio Station From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 13 Dec 03 - 10:44 PM This is only an idea at the minute, but I'm fed up of the lack of good folk radio stations in the UK, and hearing the same stuff, week, after week, on the Mike Harding folk show, so.. How much will it cost, and what equipment will I neec to start an internet folk radio station? I have a few questions about this, hopefully someone will know at least some of the answers= Who would I need to register with, ie, if i play my own CD's it says on them someting like "No broadcast without permission" who do i get the permission from, and how much does it cost? Equipment=What is the basic set up, that i would need, ie minimum spec computer? Equipment:2 Could I play CD's through the CD drive on the computer, or would I need a dedicated CD player, for decent quality? Equipment:3=If someone else volounteered to host the show one day, ie Les from Hull, or mick , [or whoever, who doesent matter!}, would I be able to do a sort of conference call, ie ring them up, then thats it, or do they need to come here, or me take computer there? Registering, etc= 1:Would I need to register with the Radio Authority, if so, how do i do that, and how much is it? 2:Web address etc, I realise i would need a website name, ie Folkradio.com, or whatever, where do you get these from, and how much is it per year? Equpiment:4 Phone Line, do i need a special one, {ISDN, CAT 5, etc, or is normal one ok? if normal one is ok, how many people can here folkradio, before the sound goes? I will have a few more questions in the next few days, sorry if my questions sound stupid and naieve [sp], but i know almost nothing about this, any help / advice is very aperciae, welcome.john |

Subject: RE: Help: Starting an Internet Radio Station From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 14 Dec 03 - 12:43 AM thanks amoes,i but, i just looked at www.hober.com, they dont seem to offer any advice, is there any website that give adsvice to people wanting tio start there own station? Also adveryising1Who would advertise on it? Advertising:2, how much to charge them? whats the going rate? Advertising:3=Does incoming revenue make it a business? ie tax and accounts etc? IF, the advertising, just paid for the phone line, and buying cd's etc, ie just covered the running costs, could i say it was a hobby?, not get involved with tax etc, or does it have to be a company to start with? Note, if and when i start this, i would prefer it to be totally lgeal , there is no point starting it, then a couple of weeks later, some oficial body saying " you did this bit wrong, were closing you down!" i know some of my qeustions might sound ignorant, but i really do, know almost nothing about this at all! [It would be great if i could buy a computer fot a hundred pounds or so, then play folk cd's, interview artists, run wuizzes, competitions etc, plug festivals/workshpps/clubs/sessions etc, but i'm sure there is a lot more to it than that? any advice/input is very welcome.thanks.john |
Subject: RE: Help: Starting an Internet Radio Station From: open mike Date: 14 Dec 03 - 02:49 AM in the U.S. there is a Federal communicationsd commissions (F.C.C.) which regulates the airwaves-bradcasters who do not cmply with their regualtions are pirates...and may be subjecty to penalty. you can send sounds either recorded, or your own live music over Paltalk. HOBER does have a guest book and they would probaly answer you--try to send them a question andsee what happens. i think they use solar power to en4ergize their syustem they are pretty creative folks. good luck. |

Subject: RE: Help: Starting an Internet Radio Station From: GUEST,Peter from Essex Date: 14 Dec 03 - 06:34 AM Talk to any of the dozens of UK community radio stations that are already webcasting. Better still get involved with one locally and learn the ropes first. For an internet domain just go through the ads at the back of any PC magazine, costs vary greatly depending on exactly what package you are buying. |
Subject: RE: Help: Starting an Internet Radio Station From: tar_heel Date: 14 Dec 03 - 07:37 PM you can get in touch with RANDY RENEGAR at ggr@globalgospelradio.com he has helped put together an internet radio station that has been on the air for a year this coming january 2004... the station operates out of King,North Carolina and is an all Gospel, all internet radio station... they have live preaching and religious services, recorded services(local and national)and live music as well as recorded music...(mostly southern gospel music by nationally known quartets and they also feature blue grass and ole-timey gospel music...( i produce and air those two shows weekly) you can see(they have a webcam set up) and hear the website at www.globalgospelradio.com also look at thier daily schedule, the staff, and scrapbook, gospel music news, etc.,there too... it's mostly an all volunteer station as far as staff is concerned and there are fees for ASCAP,BMI and other music societies... so,it's not an easy thing to set up... even though there is no fcc control, those music societies can cripple your operation if you try to dodge them...FYI |
Subject: RE: Help: Starting an Internet Radio Station From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 14 Dec 03 - 10:55 PM On the whole, I should get any specific advice from UK sources. The legal and financial arrangements are rather different in the USA, and much of their experience may not be particularly relevant from your point of view. A friend of mine used to do technical stuff (live streaming and so on) for http://interface.pirate-radio.org/; I'll have a word with him. He may be able to suggest some useful sources of information for you. |
