A question for the polymaths (a better way to say it than know-it-alls) at Mudcat: I got herself an OXO kettle for christmas, which managed to boil itself dry about 2 days later. The information that came with it says "under no circumstances should this kettle be used again if it boils dry." She says that she has boiled dry many kettles in her life, continued to use them without any harm, and doesn't see why this one should be different. Does anybody know why an OXO brand kettle should be special?

Never having heard of an Oxo kettle this intrigued me so I looked here. Oxo is a completely different product in the UK!

Looks a very high tech gizmo to boil water in. I would guess that by boiling it dry you can affect either the coating or the trigger mechanism. Once the water, which ensures the kettle should get no hotter than 100 deg. C has gone the kettle will be subjected to much higher temperatures. If it was only for a short time the temperature would only increase slightly and may cause no harm.

At the other extreme if you left it long enough you may cause the whole thing to melt! Somewhere in between you have to make your own judgement! Remember though that the disclaimer is to cover their backs. If you find yourself suffering from some kind of contaminent poisening or if the handle breaks off and causes a scald you will have no reason to complain to Oxo:-(

To answer your other question I guess that the Oxo kettle must have something to differentiate from other stove top varieties or they could not charge what they do!

My advice? Buy an electric with a thermo cut out:-)

Cheers

I think it's because they want you to buy a new kettle. :-)

No, seriously -- if there is a lining in it, and the higher temperatures caused by dry-boil have caused it to crack up, you can end up with PCBs in your tea, not good for you. This is a danger with TEFLON linings in frying pans which have been scratched up by steel implements, for example. It is significantly different than a plain metal kettle. I would inspect it carefully inside and if it is cracked up, toss it.

Especially don't use it again if your house burns down around it because you let it boil dry!

I use an electric kettle. It turns itself off if it boils dry (usually because I forgot and walked out before it boiled and whistled to remind me I was going to make tea). I can safely use it again. No coating to worry about.
