Subject: Lyr Add: HERNANDO'S HIDEAWAY (Adler & Ross)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 12 Jan 04 - 11:23 PM

Here's the original:

HERNANDO'S HIDEAWAY
(Richard Adler & Jerry Ross)

I know a dark secluded place,
A place where no one knows your face;
A glass of wine, a fast embrace --
It's called Hernando's Hideaway. (Ole!)
All you see are silhouettes,
And all you hear are castanets,
And no one cares how late it gets,
Not at Hernando's Hideaway. (Ole!)

At the golden finger bowl or anyplace you go,
You will meet your Uncle Max and ev'ryone you know;
But if you go to that spot that I am thinking of,
You will be free to gaze at me and talk of love.

Just knock three times and whisper low
That you and I were sent by Joe,
Then strike a match and you will know
You're in Hernando's Hideaway. (Ole!)

[From the Broadway musical "The Pajama Game." Recorded by Archie Bleyer, 1954.]

Now the parody:
Lyrics transcribed from the sound file at http://www.geocities.com/u2page5/

HERNANDO'S HIDEAWAY
(As sung by Homer & Jethro)

I know a dark and gloomy spot.
It's nineteen miles from Possum Trot.
It's upstairs over a vacant lot.
It's called Hernando's Hideaway. Olé!

They used to have six candles tall
A-burnin' brightly in the hall,
Till Liberace stole them all
Away. Hernando's Hideaway. Olé!

Soppin' in the gravy bowl is sure the living end.
Here's a spot that Duncan Hines will never recommend.
They serve Old Soldier Soup to you 'most ever' single day.
You eat a bowl, and durn my soul, you fade away.

What a spot to dance an' dine!
Your heart's afire, and so is mine.
The coffee tastes like turpentine.
It's gay. Hernando's Hideaway. Olé.

There's music of Hernando's group.
They sing like they are sippin' soup.
Sounds like a coon dog with the croup.
Olé! Hernando's Hideaway.

[Recorded by Homer & Jethro on "Assault the Rock & Roll Era," 1989; and "America's Song Butchers: The Weird World of Homer & Jethro," 1997.]

you can, with a smidgin of imagination, and a little gentle levering fit The Rubiayat of Omar Khyyam to this Tune, But careful It could drive you nuts...
" Awake For morning in the Bowl of night
has flung the stone that puts the stars to flight
and lo the hunter of the East has caught
the Sultans turret in a noose of light!! Ole!

I know a dark secluded place
A place where no-one knows your face
There's greasy chips with cod or plaice
It's called Hernando's Take-away

Whose woods these are, I think I know
His house in in the village low
I know he would not mind me stopping here
To watch--His woods fill up with snow.

etc

"Stopping by the woods on a snowy evening."

Looking for a modern (90s?) lyric that is sung to the Hernando's tune.

The female vocalist sounds like J Lo (or Britney on a really strange night) or some similar avant thrush, the rhythm is very catchy and swingy and lowdown. The refrain's final hook line, equivalent to "You're in Hernando's Hideaway" is

"Dance the night away, a—way."

Presumably DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY is the title also.

Heard it once, of all places, in the musical soundtrack runup to a movie at the local cinema.

Subject: I've got tears in my ears from lyin' on my back
From: GUEST,homer & jethro fan

I'VE GOT TEARS IN MY EARS
(FROM LYIN' ON MY BACK IN MY BED WHILE I CRY OVER YOU)
Written by Harold Barlow
Recorded by Homer & Jethro

I've got tears in my ears from lyin' on my back
In my bed while I cry over you
And the tears in my ears, they're off the
beaten track
Since you said "It's goodbye, we are through"
So if I should get water on the brain
You will know you're the one who is to blame
I've got tears in my ears from lyin' on my back
In my bed while I cry over you.

I've got tears in my ears from lyin'on my back
In my bed while I cry over you
I've been cryin' these tears and soakin' in my
sack
Since the day I found you were untrue
And if I don't get up pretty soon
I'll turn into a sleepy lagoon
I've got tears in my ears from lyin' on my back
In my bed while I cry over you.

I've got tears in my ears from lyin' on my back
In my bed while I cry over you
It's been so many years, my sacroiliac
Feels as though it's been soaked through and
through
Oh, you lied when you said we'd take the plunge
Now I know how it feels to be a sponge
I've got tears in my ears from lyin' on my back
In my bed while I cry over you.

I feel that old age creeping on

I could tell by the look
In my baby's eyes
I can't keep up with the younger guys
I feel that old age creeping on
All I do is walk the floor
I can't do my homework anymore
I feel that old age creeping on

Been around for many years
Too darn old to shift my gears
I feel that old age creeping on

Wanna have my crankcase drained
Get my oil and water changed
I feel that old age creeping on

Me and my gal in the Model T
She looked over and said to me
I feel that old age creeping on

Little darling, don't you tire
If my engine should backfire
I feel that old age creeping on

I'm like a flower
Without a stem
Started running without my rim
I feel that old age creeping on

I need a coat of Simonize
All my parts are volcanized
I feel that old age creeping on

Young men under 25
All have hydromantic drive
I feel that old age creeping on

I used to be young and full of zip
But now my clutch is starting to slip
I feel that old age creeping on

Many rugby songs took the tunes of hymns and fitted dirty words to them: back around 1970 there was one that was only two verses, but we strung it out a bit. First we sang Verse 1 to the hymn tune OLD HUNDREDTH (All people that on earth do dwell, etc), then repeatED it to the tune of Hernando's Hideaway, then did extravagant la-la-las (or was it da-da-das) to the bridge of HH, then repeated the whole process for Verse 2. Hardly epic poetry, but ne'er mind, eh? It went thus:

As I was walking through a wood
I shat myself: I knew I would.
I cried for help but no help came,
And so I shat myself again.

As I was walking by St Paul's
A lady grabbed me by the balls.
I cried for help but no help came,
And so she grabbed my balls again.
