Subject: Jackie Oates From: Spittal B Date: 31 Jan 04 - 09:28 AM Re Jackie Oates, Forget all about Jim Moray as the new face of Folk, take a look and listen to Jackie Oates. I'd heard her on Folk awards and thought she should have won, then I saw her live, superb fiddle singing and a good mix of tunes and songs. I beleive she will be at Sidmouth this Year, Look Out for her |
Subject: RE: Jackie Oates From: The Borchester Echo Date: 31 Jan 04 - 09:54 AM If you haven't heard Jackie Oates performing 'The Cruel Ship's Carpenter' yet, do it now. It's stunning. I too think she should have wone the YFA. Just as Jim Moray should have done two years ago. |
Subject: RE: Jackie Oates From: GUEST,eliza c Date: 31 Jan 04 - 03:32 PM Isn't she Jim's sister? Poor Jimmmy, old hat already! I thought Jackie was fantastic, but she gave a really nervous performance and we were told to judge solely on that. You know me, I would have loved someone performing English stuff to win (Tom was amazing too, playing Cheshire tunes and Eastern European stuff), but she needs more experience. I am sure she would be in with a great chance if she entered again next year. Can't wait to hear an album by her. x ec |
Subject: RE: Jackie Oates From: Folkiedave Date: 31 Jan 04 - 06:04 PM She is Jim's sister. Jim is really Douglas Oates. Dave www.collectorsfolk.co.uk |
Subject: RE: Jackie Oates From: GUEST Date: 31 Jan 04 - 08:54 PM Yeah she has a nice voice. But I don't think she should have won. Her performance was very nervy and off key a few times, although The CSC was stunning. With a few more gigs under her belt and some more confidence I think she'll be able to deliver the goods more consistently. She's definitely one to watch for the future. |
Subject: RE: Jackie Oates From: The Borchester Echo Date: 01 Feb 04 - 04:01 AM Anyone could deduce, from a cursory examination of changing Mudcat handles, who Jim Moray actually is and thence his relationship to one of last year's YFA finalists. This is quite irrelevant other than to enhance a genetic theory of shared talent between siblings. I just wonder when we will be hearing from the more appropriately named 'Totally Lacking in Sense of Humour Dave'... This thread is about Jackie Oates who, I firmly believe, was the contestant with the most potential. I know that the remit of the YFA judges is to choose 'the best performance on the night' and I fully acknowledge the outstanding musicality of the winner, Jarlath Henderson. He, however, is scarcely a newcomer as he has already a long history of success in piping competitions. Yes, Jackie was nervous and I did detect just two duff notes in the notoriously difficult-to-sound-engineer Union Chapel where the acoustics were more on the side of a piper than a fiddle singer. Will Jackie win next year's competition then? Well, I fear not because I think age is going to debar her! At 21! But she's a certainty for the grown-up Folk Awards in years to come. Catch Jackie at a festival near you soon and be amazed! |
Subject: RE: Jackie Oates From: Folkiedave Date: 01 Feb 04 - 05:19 PM Isn't she Jim's sister says one post.............. Yes he is I said. I could not have made it any simpler!! Not sure where humour comes into it. Sorry.......I promise to increase the medication. Dave |
Subject: RE: Jackie Oates From: Folkiedave Date: 01 Feb 04 - 05:24 PM Sorry.typo.......... "she"........ If Doug wants to change his name fine by me. Good enough for Jimmy Miller and John Pandrich after all. And I spend no time wondering whose name is whom's. Do people really do that? Dave www.collectorsfolk.co.uk |
Subject: RE: Jackie Oates From: fiddler Date: 02 Feb 04 - 08:41 AM I welcome this thread - keep saying good things and I SHALL AGREE WITH YOU ALL! |
Subject: RE: Jackie Oates From: The Borchester Echo Date: 02 Feb 04 - 08:57 AM Yay! I agree with fiddler. Keep it going. 'Horses Never Smile'...except when Jackie plays to them. |
Subject: RE: Jackie Oates From: The Borchester Echo Date: 03 Feb 04 - 09:15 AM And I've just got my hands on Jackie Oates' demo CD today and I am totally gobsmacked, in fact, speechless. Those who know me will confirm that this is a first. It has one live track, recorded at a gig I saw her at recently and the rest are studio recordings. Can't wait for the real one. Fiddlesinging with a gorgeous voice and fab tunes. Our tradition is safe in the hands of this fine young performer. |
Subject: RE: Jackie Oates From: Michael Date: 13 Sep 06 - 11:33 AM As I believe her brother's full name is; James Douglas Moray Oates, I can't see anything wrong(and as a performer, a lot right)with not using all of it. And by them both using different bits, there can be no accusation of 'jumping on the family bandwaggon'. They are totally different and I like both of them's music. Mike |
Subject: RE: Jackie Oates From: Rain Dog Date: 14 Sep 06 - 11:28 AM Can anyone give me the track listing on the Jackie Oates cd ? I was unable to find it when I had a quick search on the net earlier |
Subject: RE: Jackie Oates From: GUEST,English jon Date: 14 Sep 06 - 12:26 PM Jackie was kind enough to give me one of her new CDs at the weekend. It's a beautifully packaged album of beautifully arranged music - If she's reading this, thank you very much! To me, this is an incredible debut, but my feeling is that she will get stronger and stronger. She's already gone from being 'good' to 'VERY good" in an extremely short space of time. This is a remarkable record to have under your belt (although I think the >NEXT< one will be the one that makes a real storm.) What can I say? Go and buy this album, even if it's only so you have the rare first Jackie Oates CD in your collection in 20 years time! It's very good indeed. Cheers, Jon |
