Hi,
We (Laura and Diggory - Tony's 'children') are planning on putting together a 'Tony Rose Live' CD, but we need help! If anyone has any recordings of Tone playing live anywhere, or recordings that aren't on any of his previous records, then please let me know - it would be really helpful! Thanks

I have recordings from the National Folk Festival, year unknown, with Willie of Winesbury, The Banks of Green Willow and Young Banker.

I also have Folk on a Sumer's Evening from the Purcell Room on London's South Bank with Robin Hood & The Fifteen Foresters, April Morning, Tom The Barbar and Poor Fellows.

Of these the only one not to have been recorded is Robin Hood & The Fifteen Foresters. Recoding quality is uknown but doubtless 'electronic remastering' can be performed.

Can't wait for the finished article, a great memorial for Tony, who I well remember at the Herga Folk Club.

regards

Doug Giddings

I would love to get an album if it ever comes to fruition , I lived 8 years in Yeovil before coming to Canada and it was always a joy to see Tony perform , I remember also seeing him in a group with John Kirkpatrick .

I have some tapes recorded live - one of Tony Rose at the Fylde Folk Festival (I think 1983 but would need to check) but its a bit boomy 'cos it was in the main hall there. another one is from a folk club - somewhere in Yorkshire is all I can remember now - from earlier, possibly 1978/9. God only knows what the quality is like ...
Sorry if I'm a bit late with this, I've only just picked up on the link via, tortuously, folkmonster.

Can't help with the recordings I'm afraid. Just wanted to add some details to the site, On Banks of Green Willow was released in 1976 (the date is missing in the listing), and 'Lord Randall' as actually listed as 'Lord Rendal' on the sleeve and on the cover.

I only saw him a couple of times in the mid seventies - I think at the Jolly Porter folk club in Exeter. But I knew him from the fact that he was a teacher at my London grammar school (Latymer Grammar, Edmonton) in the sixties, where he taught German. He was the only (male) teacher with long hair, and regarded as a bit of a rebel.

Great singer, wonderful guitar player.

I have an album "Songs of a changing World" with Tony Rose, Nic Jones and Jon Raven. This was released by Leaders Sound Ltd 1973 (Perfect condition) I have always wanted to have this on either a CD or in MP# format.
I believe that I saw him in the "Cellar Club" in Northumberland (long since closed down I think)

Yes, what's the state of play on this one? Tony was one of my biggest influences back in the 70s. I'd like to know.

Hold your breath. Coming Soon. And other mysterious taglines that indicate that things are happening.
Sorry it's taken so long for this whole process - but I think we may soon be there! I'll keep you updated.

And again, a huge thanks to everyone who sent stuff and got in touch... it's been so great listening to everything and reading everyone's letters.

Wouldn't you seriously wonder how such a project could be held up, and who would seek to hold it up, and to what end?

Tony Rose sang in one of the first folk clubs I ever visited - Exmouth folk club. he had just finished his first year teaching and he was returning back to the area where he had been a student. I remember he had a beat up old Levin, and he sang Tavistock Goosey fair. The Journeymen (the duo from the Jolly Porter) were there that night and the guest was a young American guy called marc Sullivan. Must have been about summer 1965. As you say Tony was very handsome and charismatic.

In later years I saw him play loads of times at cambridge ff and in an around Exeter. One time I saw him - he had a midnight gig as the 'cabaret' in a night club. That was bloody weird.

What mystifies me is that - even though I really liked Tony's singing, I cannot see how it would make a fortune for anyone, or how any sensible person would dispute legal ownership to be anything other than his family's.

Laura,

I have nothing to add to any collection - just recollections.
I overlapped with Tony at Exeter School, where he was already a well regarded vocalist and musician.
Best moment was at a Music Society meeting (normally held on Saturday evenings after morning lessons and any school sport matches). Run by a Classics master who didn't stray far from fairly classical renditions. That was fine - and Tony appreciated and interpreted those roots as his Oxford Choral Scholarship proved. On this particular evening, it was a "members choice" session. Tony produced a Big Bill Broonzy LP (yes - it was that long ago!). Two tracks were enough for the master to realise that he had another commitment...
True folk was already there, but there was and is always an overlap between different music from the people's level.
Also shared a stage at some early skiffle / folk sessions at other peoples' parties. Good fun, but no doubt who made things come together.
As so often, lost contact. Almost got to a gig in Hampshire, but at the time was travelling a lot on business and missed out.
Was very sad to learn that Tony was no longer with us.
Hope the compilation goes well.

Hi Laura,

No idea what your CD will eventually be christened. Just "Tony Rose live" could cut it. But it induces a sense of loss as well.

Maybe something like "On the water". It has echoes of a specific song, but maybe also taps into other feelings...

King Arthur floated away on the water. Tony liked being on the beaches around Exeter in his youth (and actually had some good times in French and Spanish beach resorts, which I can attest to. I suppose that should have been "to which I can attest", but we all get a bit sloppy!).

Water features in quite a lot of songs. It can be rough - like emotions. It can be smoothed by someone like Tony who poured purist music onto the waves.

Hope you make it to the release line soon.

All the best.

Just a quick update...
saw Phil a week ago in Bristol... think we're still on track! Don't have a date set for release yet but we should have one soon, and it will be soon!
Got title, got designs, got everything going smoothly...

Good good good.

Grrr! Just went through the whole buying process for "Exe" on the webshop, to find they don't accept non-UK credit cards. And there is no email address - for a web-based shop!! - to contact them....

Hagman ... within the Chudleigh Roots and shop sales pages there are:

A contact email address for Chudleigh Roots here

and an email address for Vivid Productions, who appear to be operating the sales payments on the relevant sales pages, together with contact international telephone numbers, and a snailmail address for Chudleigh Roots within the shop web pages.

I would have thought that the Chudleigh Roots email address or the Vivid Productions one should have supplied your answer??? Don't know if this helps?

For the record, I found the site really easy to use and the CD arrived in 2 days. And excellent it is - a really great mix of Tony's 'classics' and some gems of songs from the '60s and '70s that might otherwise have been lost for ever to us poor fans!

I've just discovered Tony Rose's solo work (looking for versions of On One April Morning on Youtube, of all things) - and gone straight to mourning his loss. I just wish I'd known about him 10 years ago, or 30 years ago. A magnificent interpreter.

Couldn't agree more Phil. An excellent singer of traditional song and one of my personal favourites. I had the pleasure of seeing him 30 year ago and live on several other occasions and was never disappointed. I love his version of Young Hunting, and one of these weeks I'll do it at the Beech (trouble is there won't be much time left for other songs).

I knew Tony well and was luck enough to be with him often in the early 60's.I was one of the Exeter Journeymen along with the late Ken Penney and Dave Robbins. We sang at the Jolly Porter at Exeter on Tuesdays . Tony sang solo wonderfully well but would often join us as a chaotic 4some. It was more than fun.! I kept contact with him over the years. I loved his singing and still think that he was one of the best both as a singer and as a friend.
It is wonderful to hear that you are wanting to put something of this together for him.
Good luck
