Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rose of Avondale From: Bob Bolton Date: 16 Feb 04 - 11:28 PM G'day Bob (the) Foggi'un, Nobody bothered to give you the searching tips you need for the DT (this time ... they get repeated pretty often!). Names are a snare and delusion! The more of the name you type in, the more chance it won't agree with (any of) the title(s) in the DT. The most secure bits of this title are "Rose of Al* and that's a pretty safe bet to pick up most versions of the song ... alternatively, you can try a search on a safely archetypal set of words from the lyric. Another approach is to go straight to the DT itself (the bottom part of the "Lyrics and Knowledge" box up the top of the page). You can select the letter with which you think the title starts, click "Go" and scroll through ... but this one is neither under "R" (for Rose of Allendale nor "A" for Allendale ... it is listed as Sweet Rose of Allendale - so it comes under "S"! Feeling dizzy? ... Shake it off and turn up for Backblocks Musicians practice tonight for any personal tuition needed! Regards Bob |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rose of Avondale From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 16 Feb 04 - 08:43 PM There is also a local Halifax song, VERY beautiful, called Sweet Rose of Avalon. Supplied the words to Skarpi last year. Could that be it? There is a Lyr Req for it I see now. Skarpi had requested it from me in a PM. Will have to dig out the words and post in that old thread. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rose of Avondale From: The Borchester Echo Date: 16 Feb 04 - 07:08 AM Brendan probably wrote The Ould Triangle though, as it featured in his play The Quare Fellow, but Dominic said he wrote that too. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rose of Avondale From: nutty Date: 16 Feb 04 - 05:11 AM Under the title of "Avondale" I found this poem/song Avondale said to be traditional and Avondale said to be written by Brendan Behan |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rose of Avondale From: nutty Date: 16 Feb 04 - 02:07 AM There is sheet music for a song called "The Maid of Avondale" here on the Music for the Nation site .... Maid of Avondale The Maid of Avondale / by Will. S. Hays. Hays, Will. S. (William Shakespeare), CREATED/PUBLISHED New York: Peters, J. L., 1875. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rose of Avondale From: The Borchester Echo Date: 15 Feb 04 - 06:11 PM 'Avondale' has some tall trees...and an eagle. Anne of Avonlea's hair was red... Any warmer? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rose of Avondale From: Peace Date: 15 Feb 04 - 06:00 PM Consider it done, Joe. Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday dear Avonlea, Happy Birthday to you. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rose of Avondale From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 15 Feb 04 - 05:49 PM Could be. It's been posted here a few times, usually by the same people and never with any source information. There's a Rose of Ardee as well. Trouble is, there's a Rose of almost everywhere; except, so far as can so far be told, Avondale. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rose of Avondale From: Joe Offer Date: 15 Feb 04 - 05:23 PM Brucie, I think there's a rule here if you mention a song that hasn't been posted, you have to post the lyrics. If you can't find a song with that title, you have to make one up. So, what was it you were saying about Avonlea? I grouped this thread with "Rose of Allendale," with full knowledge that there could be a "Rose of Avondale." Hey, you don't think it's Rose of Arranmore, do you? -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rose of Avondale From: The Borchester Echo Date: 15 Feb 04 - 05:15 PM Oh have you been to Avonlea Where Anne's Green Gables used to be? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rose of Avondale From: Peace Date: 15 Feb 04 - 05:11 PM So, Road to Avonlea is out, huh? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rose of Avondale From: The Borchester Echo Date: 15 Feb 04 - 04:38 PM Thank you, Malcolm. That's what I assumed too. And I also went down the pipe band avenue before posting. Yes, I did read the message and helped as much as I could. (Memo to self: don't waste time replying to "guests"). |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rose of Avondale From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 15 Feb 04 - 04:30 PM Mentions of The Rose of Avondale here do seem to be from people who have just got the title of The Rose of Allandale wrong, sometimes as the result of an imagined Irish connection. There is a Blackbird of (Sweet) Avondale (which is Irish), and American songs about a mining disaster at a place of that name, but I don't find any useful references to a Rose of Avondale; though I do have an old LP of a Pipe Band playing a tune they call by that name; it's The Rose of Allandale, though, with the wrong title. Is there actually a song of that name at all? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rose of Avondale From: GUEST Date: 15 Feb 04 - 04:27 PM countess richard, Did you bother to read Allan C's original message? It would appear not... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Rose of Avondale From: The Borchester Echo Date: 15 Feb 04 - 04:19 PM Lyrics and MIDI are in the DT under Rose of Allandale. |
Subject: Lyr Req: Rose of Avondale From: Allan C. Date: 15 Feb 04 - 03:57 PM I found this request buried in another thread. I thought it could use a thread of its own. From: GUEST,Bob Foggin Eastwood Australia - PM Date: 15 Feb 04 - 09:35 AM Please help me. I am looking everywhere for the words of the Rose of Avondale. Mine are sitting chewed up in my cassette player. This is my first posting to Mudcat. Thank you, Bob Foggin. I searched the DT and Forum but found either the Rose of Allendale or the Avondale Mining Disaster. Could this be a different song altogether? |
