Subject: BS: No longer a Guest,-Part 2 From: Ellenpoly Date: 01 Mar 04 - 11:57 AM I just joined "The Clan" as well, at Deckman's suggestion, who isn't blood, but next best thing (or better, as we've discussed at times). The real reason is that I became curious to see what you all look like and a little about you, if you put some personal things out there to share. I'm kind of shy these days, so I might not do that, because I'm not really on the par with the people who play and sing folk music regularly. But having two good friends (Dear Walt Robertson, and then Deckman, who I inherited from the former...bless em) and reading and writing here for a while now.. I guess I realize that the desire in us to be a part of a tribe, even an online one, can be most tantalizing. I'll try my best not to be obnoxious, or any of the other things on the list at the beginning of the first "no longer a guest" thread, but if I am, I know damn well there will be people to remind me to watch my p's and q's (let me know if you ever want to know where expressions like that come from...that's the kind of thing I can offer.)...e |

Subject: RE: BS: No longer a Guest,-Part 2 From: Allan C. Date: 01 Mar 04 - 01:53 PM Welcome, Ellenpoly! The stuff we learn here is absolutely amazing! For instance, you can find a discussion of the origins of "P's and Q's" in this thread. Probably the best part of the Mudcat, other than the vast amount of musical information, is the cross-cultural exchanges we have. I know that I have learned so much about customs, word usage, foods!! and so many other things that are the stuff of everyday life in places such as Samoa, China, Iceland and so on. The list of places also includes the more familiar, Wales, France, England, Austria, Scotland, Australia, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Canada and many others. Certainly I have learned more about my own United States than I ever knew. Heck, if you don't learn anything other than a bit of geography and develop a sense of time zone differences, you've accomplished quite a lot! One of the offshoots of this cultural exchange is that often we have come to know one another in the 3D world as well. I can't begin to relate to you the thrill of meeting some of these folks in the flesh! What a fabulous bunch of folks! **My goodness! He does go on a bit, doesn't he!** Again, welcome! |

Subject: RE: BS: No longer a Guest,-Part 2 From: Don Firth Date: 01 Mar 04 - 04:46 PM Hi, Ellen! We met at the hoot at Bob's (Deckman's)—Walt's last—but we didn't get much of a chance to talk. I met Liss for the first time there also. She and I talked on the phone a couple of times. Apart from my Significant Other in 1952 (lovely girl named Claire) showing me G, C, and D7 on her guitar and helping me struggle with them, Walt was my first real guitar teacher. I learned a lot of guitar from him and probably half the songs I know. Welcome aboard. As you well know by now, this place is nutty, but nice. How's this for pedantic? One theory (rarely put forth, but as good as any) regarding the origin of the expression about watching one's p's and q's comes from the formal study of symbolic logic. P is the major premise, Q is the minor premise ("P implies Q. P, therefore, Q"). In a complex problem in logic, if you get the two confused, which is sometimes easy to do, your philosophy prof will cover your test bluebook with so many red pencil marks, it'll look like it's bleeding. Only one of many theories, however. Don Firth |

Subject: RE: BS: No longer a Guest,-Part 2 From: Ellenpoly Date: 02 Mar 04 - 11:48 AM Gettin' all kinds of warm feelings up and down my back, and though I know it's probably my hot water bottle, it's still grand to know I've been welcomed! I may be only a part-timer, until I catch on to it all, and even then, my online time is limited due to my ISP, which is as cheap as they come over here in Blighty (Tiscali, for those looking for a good bargain in Britain, and there are darn few to be found on this island.) I know I've already met a few of you in my wanderings, and I have a feeling we'll meet up again. Just for now, thanks so much, and let the good times roll! Namaste..xx..e (Yes, of course I remember meeting you Don, at Walt's last Hoot) |

Subject: RE: BS: No longer a Guest,-Part 2 From: Amos Date: 02 Mar 04 - 11:52 AM Don: The expression predates propositional logic by a significant measure, which makes your proposed theory a bit hard, I think. I think minding P's and Q's was in usage in King George's day. "If p then q" didn't get into currency until George Boole's era, I believe. Open to correction. A |

Subject: RE: BS: No longer a Guest,-Part 2 From: Don Firth Date: 02 Mar 04 - 12:06 PM Yeah, Amos, you're probably right. I always thought the logic thing was stretching it a bit, but Prof. Meldon (with the red pencil) insisted that's where it came from. I actually like pints and quarts better. My misspent youth. . . . Subject: RE: BS: No longer a Guest,-Part 2 From: Deckman Date: 02 Mar 04 - 12:08 PM Welcome aboard Ellen, See, I told you that becoming a member was painless. By the way, thanks for that check for fifty bucks for your MUDCAT membership fee. I'll try to remember to get a receipt soon. I think I should warn all my catter friends about this lady. She's got to be one of the most cantankerous, challenging, aurgementitive persons I've ever loved! To say nothing of her brilliant mind, great beauty, and always insightful observations. So, hold on to your seats folks, it's 'gonna be great having her as a member. CHEERS, Bob(deckman)Nelson |

Subject: RE: BS: No longer a Guest,-Part 2 From: Allan C. Date: 02 Mar 04 - 01:53 PM Leave it to Bob to figure out some way to wheedle money out of a poor, unsuspecting new Mudcatter! *G* I am hoping that in an attack of guilt he has explained that your membership is totally free. On the other hand, the Mudcat coffer is always ready and waiting for any contributions. |

Subject: RE: BS: No longer a Guest,-Part 2 From: Deckman Date: 02 Mar 04 - 04:06 PM "Allan C." ... I resemble that remark. I did explain to Ellen that, as a new member living in London, we would make every effort to keep her monthly dues to minumum. By the way, I'm thinking of running for the position of "MUDCAT TREASURER!" I mean, after all, if you can't screw your friends (out of their money) then you have to screw strangers! Right? CHEERS, Bob |

Subject: RE: BS: No longer a Guest,-Part 2 From: Deckman Date: 02 Mar 04 - 08:03 PM Ellenpoly ... I'll give you a suggestion, for no extra charge. Sometime soon, you might post notes about yourself in the profile page. That will give folks a heads up about you and it will help them to get to know you sooner. Oh, and when you post your pictures, you probably want to leave your clothes on, this time! Bob |

Subject: RE: BS: No longer a Guest,-Part 2 From: Ellenpoly Date: 03 Mar 04 - 03:52 AM "She's got to be one of the most cantankerous, challenging, aurgementitive persons"...Now PLEASE remember the source here. I would not have used these words to describe myself, but some folks do have trouble being questioned, which is just fine, Deckman, honey. I will get around to putting in a profile, but I'd like some advice here...I think perhaps I'll start a new thread on the subject and see what gets pulled up in the net...xx..e |

Subject: RE: BS: No longer a Guest,-Part 2 From: Deckman Date: 03 Mar 04 - 04:50 AM Your last posting reminded me of the two Sammi (Finn) brothers that were on their two week trapping. The first night, one brother cooked the meal. After supper, he asked his brother, "How did you like the food?" The next morning, his brother was missing, but there was a note. It said, "I didn't want to argue!" For your photo, how about using one of those "group" shots? Perhaps the one of you standing in the crowd, on the elevator, in the department store. CHEERS, Bob |
