hello I'm just visiting here and wanted to ask a quick question about a name in the song Follow Me Up To Carlow and the general history of the song itself.

The chorus is this: " Curse and swear Lord Kildare/Feich will do what Feich will dare/Now Prince William have a care/Fallen is your star-lo/Up with halberd out with sword/On we'll go for by the Lord/Feich McCool (McCuill? not sure how it is spelled in Gaelic) has given his word/Follow Me Up To Carlow "

Who is Feich? Is it a variation on the name Fionn McCool of the Fianna or is this a different person? And what's the history behind the song?

Thank you :)

You've misunderstood some of the words, but there's nothing unusual in that. The excellent onsite search engine we have here will find, if you ask it for, say, follow me up to carlow, this previous discussion:

Origins: Follow me up to Carlow

Once you've read that you'll have plenty to be going on with.

There are several threads on this song. Try using the Lyrics & Knowledge Search, e.g., typing in "up to carlow", with both the DT and Forum boxes checked, and clicking "Search".

Fiac MacHugh (O'Byrne) is the fellow in the song - no relation at all to the other fellow with the Fianna.

Pete
