Subject: star wars From: GUEST,dinnerlady Date: 20 Mar 04 - 08:04 PM On tv tonight I have learned that the film Star Wars is the best film ever ever ever. Now I have achieved the advanced age of 42 and yet I have NEVER seen this film!!!I'm just pissed off and thought I would share this. What do you lot reckon is the best film?? |
Subject: RE: star wars From: GUEST,earthling Date: 20 Mar 04 - 09:02 PM You're new here too? This should be below the line. I have been here long enough to know that snippet of info, but that's as good as it gets, at least this way it should remain hidden, and nobody will ever know that I haven't seen it either. So nice to meet a fellow non-see'er. I just have an aversion to anything with a wardrobe by Bacofoil. Never even seen Star Trek , so maybe I am even more of a philistine than you? They are loved by millions, but hold no appeal for me. It's not something I admit readily.Maybe there is a support group for us somewhere darkened.Maybe in our next reincarnation we won't be able to get enough of them. As for "best film".....now be lenient here, and allow me three? Spookily enough have already mentioned one earlier somewhere else...but I would have to plump for the three that have left a lasting impression on me for different reasons, "best" anythings are very personal aren't they....stop fudging, get on with the job in hand..ok then... 1. Kes 2. Don't Look Now. 3. My Left Foot. There, done the deed, feel cleansed now. So Dinnerlady, what would yours be? |
Subject: RE: star wars From: GUEST,earthling Date: 20 Mar 04 - 09:03 PM Eeeek we're in the light. |
Subject: RE: star wars From: GUEST,Obie Date: 20 Mar 04 - 09:08 PM Subjective indeed but Star Wars ???????? Great special effects but if you disregard that, what is left? My all time favourite movie is Going My Way. (I'm Canadian and yes, favourite is correctly spelt ! :-} ) Obie |
Subject: RE: star wars From: Allan C. Date: 20 Mar 04 - 09:34 PM "Best" can only refer to box office receipts and I'm no longer sure it still stands in the winner's circle in that category either. I think it was a very good film for a number of reasons; but have a long list of front runners that does not include this film. |
Subject: RE: star wars From: Kaleea Date: 21 Mar 04 - 01:44 AM "best film ever ever ever?" Must have been an extreme sci-fi/starwars fan. There have been thousands of films made by film makers all over earth, in addition to the endless vast amounts which have come from Hollywood & the other film makers of America. Whom, I would like to inquire, has seen them all and may therefore surmise which particular film is the "best film ever ever ever?" How many of you have seen "Marty" with Ernest Borgnine? It is considered to be mandatory viewing by many cinema educators, along with films made in the 1930's,40's with no special effects whatsoever, not to mention the many made by film makers not from the USA. And yes, I have seen "Star Trek & Star Wars." |
Subject: RE: star wars From: GUEST Date: 21 Mar 04 - 06:48 AM There was a poll of 100 films, I think it was 100 anyway, as voted for by the public, televised last night, and Star Wars came out top. |
Subject: RE: star wars From: Clinton Hammond Date: 21 Mar 04 - 12:15 PM Make sure you see the original theatrical release of Star War... not the butchered version that mostly available now... Remember... keep your history alive Greedo did NOT shoot first Han Solo NEVER walked on Jabba's tail! I wish someone would take this movie away from that hack Lucas... |
Subject: RE: star wars From: GUEST,dinnerlady Date: 21 Mar 04 - 08:43 PM Jabba? Greedo??Solo? What??? Who ARE these people....?? Well Earthling, in response to your kind enquiry into my favourite films I have to say that I like so many that it's difficult to put them into any kind of order but I can say with some certainty that there will nothing remotely sci fi like in my favourites...or anything with any rings in it for that matter.... Woody Allen would feature highly..Manhatten, Annie Hall....something by Neil Simon would pitch right up there...Barefoot in the park...California Suite...oooh....just thought of The Graduate....him in the church desperately shouting 'Elaine!!!' oh...and something in black and white where they all talk like 'thet' and are either 'terribly heppy' or 'terribly unheppy'....Celia Johnson floating around with her huge sad doe eyes and dahhhling Trevor being ever so stiff upper lipped and repressed and Rachmaninov pouuding away in the background to compound the misery of it all...Yep Brief Encounter......what an uplifting film that is..... |
Subject: RE: star wars From: Peace Date: 21 Mar 04 - 09:17 PM My choice for best movie is "From the Horse's Mouth". |
Subject: RE: star wars From: Art Thieme Date: 21 Mar 04 - 09:51 PM Chelsea Walls |
Subject: RE: star wars From: Bee-dubya-ell Date: 21 Mar 04 - 11:22 PM Depends on whether you're talking about Star Wars, the single movie, or Star Wars, the series of movies. If you consider the three original movies (Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi) as a single film in three installments it scores pretty high on my list. Not #1, but maybe in the top ten. I hesitate to call any movie "the best" because it usually amounts to comparing apples and oranges, but my short list definitely includes Lord of the Rings (the 3 movies considered as a whole) The Godfather (Parts 1 & 2 - They can keep part 3) One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest Babe The Usual Suspects Fargo Little Big Man Dead Man Walking Dr. Strangelove That's 9. I guess that makes the original Star Wars trilogy #10. Bruce |

Subject: RE: star wars From: el ted Date: 22 Mar 04 - 05:42 AM Flamenco by Carlos Saura. Carmen by Carlos Saura. Don't argue, you know I am right. |
Subject: RE: star wars From: Sttaw Legend Date: 22 Mar 04 - 07:46 AM El Ted, Carmen was by Bizet, she inspired the "Ciggy Song" because of her working at the Seville cigarette factory. Don't argue you know I am right. |
Subject: RE: star wars From: el ted Date: 22 Mar 04 - 09:12 AM Sttaw, you are a silly billy. Saura made a flamenco version of Bizet's opera, and it was in spanish not bloody french. It featured guitar work by the glorious Paco de Lucia and his brother Ramon de Algeciras. Don't argue, you know I am right. |
Subject: RE: star wars From: Sttaw Legend Date: 22 Mar 04 - 10:09 AM Spain and France always have problems with QA and version control. Why does Paco and Ramon have different surnames ? When is the Flamenco version of Star Wars due for release ? |
Subject: RE: star wars From: el ted Date: 22 Mar 04 - 11:25 AM Flamenco musicians are a bit like mudcat people, NO ONE uses their real name. |
Subject: RE: star wars From: el ted Date: 22 Mar 04 - 11:30 AM I forgot to say........... Don't argue, you know I am right. |
Subject: RE: star wars From: GUEST,Clint Keller Date: 23 Mar 04 - 04:12 AM King Kong, first version. It was the first movie I ever saw, when I was first learning to talk, and they threw me (and my mother) out because I was so loudly pleased with the big monkey. It has held its place in my heart ever since. clint |
Subject: RE: star wars From: Midchuck Date: 23 Mar 04 - 09:52 AM I had the whole set of the paperback reissues of the E.E. Smith "Lensman" books, that originally came out in the 1940s. A while back I sent them to my son. Spoke to him on the phone a few days ago and he said he'd gotten well into reading them. What amazed him, he said, was how much George Lucas had stolen, that he thought was original ideas in the Star Wars movies. I said, "Ayuhh," like any good Vermont father. Peter. |
Subject: RE: star wars From: GUEST Date: 23 Oct 04 - 10:26 PM Go Star Wars wow its 7 months later than the other posts |
Subject: RE: star wars From: mack/misophist Date: 23 Oct 04 - 10:59 PM "Best" is subjective. And cultural. And time limited. The "best" movie of the century is Attack of The Killer Tomatos . The critics just haven't seen it in perspective yet. Don't argue. You may not know it, but I'm right. |
Subject: RE: star wars From: Mark Cohen Date: 24 Oct 04 - 05:46 AM Didn't Lucas take the bar scene from "Ringworld?" Aloha, Mark |
Subject: RE: star wars From: Chris Green Date: 24 Oct 04 - 09:33 AM If you liked "Star Wars", then "The Hidden Fortress" by Akira Kurosawa is worth a watch, especially since George Lucas nicked a load of the plot and characters from it for "Star Wars"! |
Subject: RE: star wars: What Order to Watch? From: Mrrzy Date: 26 Dec 15 - 06:13 PM There are a ton of threads on this topic but none on point so I thought I'd refresh this nicely generically titled one to ask, what order should one watch them in if one wanted, as I do, to see them all (re-see for the ones that came out first) before watching the new one again? Here you can read the opinions of Lucas, Abrams and others on the question. I am reserving my opinion for the nonce. What do y'all think? |
Subject: RE: star wars From: Stilly River Sage Date: 26 Dec 15 - 06:52 PM The original film (called episode 4, and renamed A New Hope), followed by 5, The Empire Strikes Back, and then 6, Return of the Jedi. They make sense since the current film is intended sequentially after these three. The "prequel" films (Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith) were dismissed recently by film reviewer Bob Mondello, and having read a few reviews when they came out I've never felt inclined to watch them. Subject: RE: star wars From: Mrrzy Date: 26 Dec 15 - 11:52 PM What kind of left turn did this thread just take, kendall? I think 4, 5, 6, then the new one, and then, maybe, 1, 2, 3? Or would it help with the new one to have seen 123? |
Subject: RE: star wars From: michaelr Date: 27 Dec 15 - 12:29 AM Lucas' "vision" has always been pretty pedestrian, compared to truly creative authors like Pratchett, Donaldson and Williams. It's laughable to see it taken seriously. |
Subject: RE: star wars From: Stilly River Sage Date: 27 Dec 15 - 01:01 AM I don't think 1, 2, and 3 will provide more than a couple of name references that you can easily pick up in context in the new film. |
Subject: RE: star wars From: GUEST,punkfolkrocker Date: 27 Dec 15 - 01:07 AM Guardians of The Galaxy and Jupiter Ascending - both in 3D - are just as much if not even more entertaining pop corn sci fi... |
Subject: RE: star wars From: Joe Offer Date: 27 Dec 15 - 01:25 AM Any time you try to pick "the best" of anything, you open a can of worms. There have been lots of terrific movies over the past hundred years. My favorite is still Casablanca. Or maybe Chicago. Well, come to think of it, To Kill a Mockingbird was really terrific. There's no way to determine "best movie" objectively. It's all a matter of taste, so why argue about it? And I did see Star Wars back in 1977, and I liked it - and I liked all the sequels. I'd watch them in order. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: star wars From: Steve Shaw Date: 27 Dec 15 - 06:36 AM Gone Girl was utter crap. What a waste of money. |
Subject: RE: star wars From: GUEST,punkfolkrocker Date: 27 Dec 15 - 10:24 AM The new Mad Max reboot is absolutely brilliant non stop action and exciting thrilling entertainment. San Andreas is corny old fashioned family in jeopardy cliched Disaster movie nonsense but the CGI destruction of most of California is breath taking... Can't wait until I can see the 3D versions of both of them as well... |
