I'm getting mildly disapproving of pop ups, some of which are downright obscene. I've got Pop-ups blocked on my machine but the beggars are still getting though.

I've come across a site called Message Stop which offers to stop pop ups for a one time fee of $9.95. Has anyone come across this site, si it safe and does it work. Any other suggestions for stopping the pop ups gratefuly received.

i wouldnt advise you to pay for a program that stops them, as it cannot stop all of them.
But, you can get the GOOGLE TOOLBAR

it simply puts a very small bar at the top of your internet pages and is fantastic at stopping popups. i downloaded it a month ago and it has already blocked 2400 pop ups.
You can also click it so that it doesnt block pop ups from certain trusted sites, which sometimes you need.

It is well worth it for free, and it is not even 1mb so even 33k modems can have no trouble

Use Opera browser BLICKY - you can set it so that it prevents ALL pop-ups from appearing. If you are visiting a site where you want pop-ups, you can allow them at the click of a couple of buttons, then when you move on, you reset to block them.
It also uses multiple web pages within the same window and loads of other neat tricks which make surfing easier.
Quack!

Second s6k's suggestion.
It's very good. Has a lot of other labour saving options as well

If you found the pop-up blocker site from a popup, be very afraid. One of the "popular" scams is to offer to download a popup blocker that actually contains invasive spyware - as in keystroke logger - that you don't want on your machine. Quite a number of less nasty ones simply don't do anything except reset your security level in your browser, - something you can do for yourself, and will probably "unset" when you see how much it interferes with navigating the web.

I haven't added the Google blocker, but have heard good reports on it.

John

I use AdSubtract, and it does a good job.

I have the Google pop up blocker too, and I'm very happy with it. One of my favourite weather websites always had annoying pop ups with it - not any more!

Just lately I've noticed my pop up stopper in high gear when I visit Google, and that really pisses me off!

If you are one (like me) who doesn't want your web usage forwarded to others for them to use as they please, don't get the Google Toolbar! One of its functions is to send that usage record to Google, and from there on the ball is loose on the field.

The toolbar basically sends google information back on what the most popular sites are you have been visiting, etc.
However i think it only counts the sites you go to when you search via the toolbar, not sure.
Also, i think you might be able to disable it in the options, cant remember too clearly.

Anyway its a matter of personal choice i suppose, i personally dont mind if people see what i've visited, i mean i am sad.. i only visit Mudcat!

s6k - that's not sad, it's the best site around. You obviously have very good taste.

It is indeed the best site around! perhaps i have been so blinded by the sheer greatness that i havent yet had chance to fully explore other websites on this, intranet.

The Google toolbar includes a component that allows Google to keep track of which sites you click to from a Google search. This means that when you install the Google toolbar, you "volunteer" to be a "reasearch subject" to help them compile statistics that they need in order to get the sites people want to see first on the list.

In order to know what the "tracking element" of the tool bar does, you have to read all of the "disclosure document" that they make easily available. This includes about 80 pages of fine print (I printed the main document once) and an additional similar amount in half a dozen supplemental disclosures that are "incorporated by citation" in the main statement.

I have read all of them, and I don't find anything that is objectionable to me. They provide a service that I find helpful, and the "tracking" that they do appears likely to be, and is limited to, information that they can use to improve Google. It includes only statistical information on the use of Google without any "personal identification" of the users from whom the information is collected.

There is always the possibility that "they lied" and might collect additional information, or might make "surreptitious" use of what they collect. Some other "reputable(?) sources" have done some pretty shady things (AOL and Yahoo come immediately to mind); but the complete disclosure that is available from Google gives me reasonable confidence that they are doing what they say they do.

I don't find it objectionable, but you should be aware that installing the Google toolbar does constitute your agreement that they may collect statistics on what you do with it.

John

Amen to that.
If you dont mind about that, then go for it.
I would put in a good word for google not lying to customers, i wouldnt think they would do that.
They are currently creating an email account, like hotmail, but with a spam protection, and instead of the free hotmail 2mb limit, google will have a 1000mb limit, because they believe you should be able to keep the emails forever!!
they are doing all this for free, they hope... *snigger*
