Subject: Touching Evil (USA Cable TV Show) From: wysiwyg Date: 18 Apr 04 - 12:39 AM Excellent newer drama. Friday evenings 10 PM eastern time, repeats Saturday midmorning, on USA Cable Network. Anyone else? I have a GREAT idea for an alternative show premise-- make him the cold-case detective who solves all of the unsolved murders he himself left cold. (Start off with some really bad old baddie whose been underground but has come back to taunt him now that he's back on the job but impaired.) Now that he's had his brain altered by that injury that interferes with his self-censorship, he can see things he missed back then, as if they are painted in neon. Doing these stories would involve him playing 2 characters in each show-- the self he is now and the person he WAS, in flashbacks. How cool would THAT be? ~S~ |

Subject: RE: Touching Evil (USA Cable TV Show) From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 18 Apr 04 - 05:04 AM Hey there WYSIWYG, isn't this the rather gory BRITISH detective-mystery-thingy that we saw here about two years ago? Stars a Scottish or Irish actor whose name I've forgotten, but who always plays detectives with mental/marital/attitude problems? Johnny :0) |

Subject: RE: Touching Evil (USA Cable TV Show) From: Greg F. Date: 18 Apr 04 - 09:41 AM Not exactly, Johnny- its a rip-off & pastiche of the much better done British Version with D.I. Dave Creegan-played by Robson Greenwith- reconstituted for a US Audience. Must to Avoid- watch the original. |

Subject: RE: Touching Evil (USA Cable TV Show) From: ranger1 Date: 18 Apr 04 - 10:13 AM We yanks actually get to see the original British version on Public Television. Mystery usually runs it every so often. I like the original so much that I won't watch the American version (even if I had cable). |

Subject: RE: Touching Evil (USA Cable TV Show) From: katlaughing Date: 18 Apr 04 - 10:41 AM I agree with GregF and ranger1. I love watching Robson Green act in anything and I cannot even imagine that anyone could ever play the character better. I won't even watch the imitation. Why does American TV do that, anyway? Lack of creativity or pure lazyness? |

Subject: RE: Touching Evil (USA Cable TV Show) From: wysiwyg Date: 18 Apr 04 - 11:20 AM I think you might give it a try. I've never seen the original. This is pretty good though, on its own. ~Susan |

Subject: RE: Touching Evil (USA Cable TV Show) From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 18 Apr 04 - 12:40 PM Yep Greg, Robson Green it was! I'd got Ken Stott in mind - nothing like Robson Green! Anyway you transatlantic types, I've seen some of your TV shows - watch the British version and learn. I'll get back to me cave now.......... Johnny :0) |

Subject: RE: Touching Evil (USA Cable TV Show) From: Metchosin Date: 18 Apr 04 - 12:40 PM Richard, I would agree with you regarding Coltrane, although I found some of the episodes of Touching Evil with Greene to be quite gripping and very well done. As yet, nobody can touch the Brits when it comes to mysteries and drama. Remakes in the US might get the storyline correct, but seem to be unable to develop any real humanity or depth of character in the protagonists, something always gets lost in translation. Perhaps it is the lack of interesting female characters that is one of the stumbling points, there don't seem to be any equivalents of Helen Mirren or Zoe Wanamaker in the US. |

Subject: RE: Touching Evil (USA Cable TV Show) From: katlaughing Date: 18 Apr 04 - 02:03 PM I agree also about Coltrane, esp. in Cracker, but I love what Green (on his official website there is no "e" at the end) brings to his characters, very much. |

Subject: RE: Touching Evil (USA Cable TV Show) From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 19 Apr 04 - 07:40 AM Perhaps its to do with the fact that the Brits use brain to solve problems whereas Americans just shout at them (ER being a point in question, in the UK I've never seen sick people made better by a horde in hospital uniforms running around like headless chickens and shouting meaningless drivel as loudly as possible at them)! :0) :0) I'll get back to my cave then..................... Subject: RE: Touching Evil (USA Cable TV Show) From: GUEST Date: 19 Apr 04 - 10:47 AM The US seems to have an entire industry centered around taking British TV shows and re-creating them as poor knock-offs for many times the cost and with sensational lack of success. |

I've seen the original, Susan, and could never get into it. This is a much better Americanization than what they did to Cracker. I've enjoyed it quite a bit. |

Subject: RE: Touching Evil (USA Cable TV Show) From: wysiwyg Date: 19 Apr 04 - 02:32 PM But I refuse to go see the new "Cheaper by the Dozen." (shudder) I hated Cracker! And we saw Cold Case last night for the first and LAST time. ~S~ |
