Subject: Albuquerque Folk Festival
From: GUEST,Bryant

Hi Mudcatters,

Just wanted to pass on a link to the 6th Annual Albuquerque Folk Festival coming up on Saturday, June 19th, 2004 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, should anyone happen to be visiting at the time (or living in NM and not have heard about it.) http://www.abqfolkfest.org/

Looks like a lot of great live music, jams, and workshops ranging from the common (guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle) to the esoteric (Klezmer, women's barbershop, shape note singing, McTeggart Irish step dance.) Come by if you're in town.

*******

By the way, I'm curious as to whether anyone who regularly posts here is from Albuquerque and might be interested in some informal jamming. I've been to some NM Pickers events, but I'm a little less of a bluegrass purist than most of those folks, (i.e Grateful Dead, Townes Van Zandt, Gillian Welsh, etc.)

Bryant

bryant, actually quite a few of the folks who
come to chare music online on thursday night
are Albuquerquians (?) and there is quite an
active jamming community there...sometimes they
log on from one of their houses and play online
with several musicians. Several of them have c.d's
out too. see the thread on pal talk thurdsay jam
for info.

A few of us from Catron County will be at the ABQ Folk Fest. If you decide to become a member here at Mudcat, we can PM each other and figure out a way to meet there. In the meantime, here's a link to the FOLKMADS, the NM folk music and dance society website.

Here's some info, pasted from the site to get you started:

FolkMADS sponsors Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Taos contra dances, concerts, camps, and other special events.

Albuquerque Dances 1st and 3rd Saturdays. Heights Community Center, 823 Buena Vista SE, Albuquerque.

ABQ Megaband Practices Albuquerque Megaband practice is held at the Blue Dragon Coffee House, 1517 Girard NE,Albuquerque, the Tuesday before the 3rd Saturday dance. Bruce Thomson, 277-4729, or email Jane Phillips jphill@NOSPAMunm.edu (remove "NOSPAM" when emailing) for more info or to be added to the listserv

Acoustic Jam 7 p.m. before the Albuquerque dances. All acoustic musicians are welcome and all types of music are played. Call Jay Cutts for more information, 281-0684.

Hi Open Mike and SueB,

Open Mike, what is Chare Music Online? I did a search for it on Google and got nothing. And is "pal talk" a thread here on Mudcat or at another site?

SueB, thanks for the FOLKMADS link. I'll try to stop by one of the Megaband practices at the Blue Dragon.

We plan to be in Albuquerque for one day on our way further west, and that day is June 19! Trouble is we won't be getting into town until late afternoon or early evening, since we're coming from further east. And the website for the folk fest says there is no RV parking at the fairgrounds! (Harrummmph...) So we'll be at our campground with instruments to play. Any ideas?

Park somewhere else and take a cab or bus. The fairgrounds are easy to reach, and you should be able to find someplace else to park, even if you have to pay a few bucks. Do you have campground reservations already? I think you might need to check into that. And the camping around Albuquerque on Forest Service land is not open to all:

All developed recreation areas on the Cibola National Forest allow camping except those on the Sandia Ranger District, which are for group camping and day-use picnicking.   Most campgrounds are more than an hour's drive from Albuquerque; Tajique or Fourth of July campgrounds on the Mountainair Ranger District are nearest and are approximately 50 miles from the Albuquerque city limits. Developed campgrounds have a 2-week camping limit during any one visit. The Cibola National Forest has no national forest administered cabins or lodges. More information here.

It should be hot and beautiful in Albuquerque. Take time to poke around some of the older neighborhoods (park at the Sheraton or the museum north of Old Town and walk from there--the streets are too narrow for RVs).

Thanks, SRS. You got me moving.

Just called and got reservations at a campground 3 miles from the fairgrounds. They say we could take a bus to get there, but then all our instruments would remain behind. Might just drive over to Old Town instead, which has RV parking. I'd really like to see a bit of this beautiful area before we have to move on, and Old Town looks interesting.

But back to folk music. If any folks going to the festival are staying at the KOA, look us up later in the evening!

Don't know if the Mrs. can make it, but I am certainly planning on being there. Hope to see some of you there.

SRS - Having been born in Santa Fe, I regard "hot and beautiful" as somewhat of a oxymoron, but hopefully it will be beautiful, and maybe even cool.

Looking forward to having a great time.

Freightdawg.

Freightdawg, I contrast the "hot and beautiful" of the desert environment to "hot and muggy as hell" of the Texas prairie summer environment. There is beauty here also in Texas, but it's harder to see when you are so sticky and uncomfortable from the heat. And in New Mexico it cools down nicely in the evenings; not so, here.

SRS,

Ah. I understand completely.

Maybe I'll run into you - I'd enjoy meeting some Mudcatter's in "3-d" as they say.
