Subject: Steve Roud Index From: CTMD Date: 29 Apr 04 - 04:14 AM Does anyone know where I can get hold of a copy of the Steve Roud Index, as I am doing some porject work at University, and this would be quite useful to help with the research. Chris |

Subject: RE: Steve Roud Index From: GUEST,Martin Ryan Date: 29 Apr 04 - 06:17 AM Roud's index is invaluable. When I bought a copy a year or two ago, it came with a simple Access interface but its very easy to customise. Regards |
Subject: RE: Steve Roud Index From: GUEST,MCP Date: 29 Apr 04 - 08:28 AM I agree with Martin about the index. Although the the Tradsong article give Steve's email address as: RoudATdialDOTpipexDOTcom, my own address book has it as RoudATsupanetDOTcom (with suitable substitutions). Mick |

Subject: RE: Steve Roud Index From: Joe Offer Date: 29 Apr 04 - 03:00 PM What software do I need to run the index? I have Microsoft Works with Word, and WordPerfect with Quattro Pro. I could reinstall a 1995 version of Access, but I'm afraid it might cause me other problems. Can I run it in the Works database, or in Quattro Pro? Or does Martin mean that the package includes a runtime version of Microsoft Access? -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Steve Roud Index From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 29 Apr 04 - 03:49 PM The current edition comes as a ready-made Access 2000 database (can't be read by earlier versions), as a CardIndex database (with reading software; librarians seem to like it but I find it clumsy, and the search options are very limited), and in standard comma-delimited format for importing into the database software of your choice. I imported it into Access 97 without difficulty, following the instructions provided. I'd imagine that most decent database programs will handle that, but I can't speak for the two you mention. |
Subject: RE: Steve Roud Index From: Joe Offer Date: 29 Apr 04 - 04:34 PM Hi, Malcolm - but it is a flat database available in comma-delineated format, so I would imagine it can be run in almost any database or spreadsheet software. Is the cost still $100 US and £60 in the UK? How long and how often do we get updates at that price? What's contained in a typical song entry? Can you post the text of one here? Thanks. -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Steve Roud Index From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 29 Apr 04 - 06:18 PM Theoretically, subscription is annual. In practise, it can run a good bit longer than that, depending on how often Steve is able to produce updates (the last one was July 2003, and included a lot of new material; he's added the Gardiner Collection since then that I know of, and doubtless a lot more as well). Contact him for the current details. The price you have is for two separate indexes; Folksong and Broadsides. Entries in the former include 20 fields. It's absolutely invaluable for anybody seriously interested in the subject, though it can lead to a serious escalation of the book-buying habit! I was inaccurate in my earlier specs: it's Cardbox, not Cardindex, and there's also a ready-made Filemaker database included. Plus full bibliography, manual and conversion instructions (Word docs.) |
Subject: RE: Steve Roud Index From: Abby Sale Date: 29 Apr 04 - 09:19 PM I got mine from Dick through Camsco. Yep, handy gadget. |
Subject: RE: Steve Roud Index From: GUEST,Martin Ryan Date: 30 Apr 04 - 03:24 AM Joe As you suspect, there's no problem importing the files into anyone's favourite database management system. The details of entries are around somewhere - I'll find them on line later if Malcolm doesn't get there before me. Drop me a PM if I can be of any specific help. Regards |
