Is the Mudcat turning into one huge rubbish dump ?
Funny as these threads have been, they are now getting tedious, even this one.

I once made a successful business selling rubbish to the public,
if you tell them it's rubbish they won't believe you.
My mother in law is a hippopotamus.

You can also get rid of rubbish by telling people it's "free". You put a sign up saying "FREE STUFF!" by the rubbish, and they happily take it away! I have a friend who did that and it worked great.

In a major American city some years back there was a garbage collectors' strike that occurred around Christmastime. Unpleasant stuff was accumulating on the sidewalks waiting to be picked up. One enterprising soul gift-wrapped his garbage, put it in the back seat of his car, and left the car unlocked. A few hours later, someone had collected his garbage. Joyeaux Noel!

A perfect example of the old "If you build it they will come." Start a thread entiled "rubbish" and you will bet rubbish replies.

Trash-What you throw out

Rubbish- Sir jOhn from Hull's favorite word

Garbage-What is worth sifting through, both out on the streets, and here on Mudcat Threads, because one person's Garbage is another person's Treasure.

Back in NYC we celebrated "Good Garbage Day". Honest. Once every two weeks there would be a special pick up of furniture and large items. I have an antique leather hat box, a variety of tables and books - all good garbage. A friend found a silver Tiffany picture frame, Godey prints. Amazing.

the best was a little girl who saw an old book in someone's trash. It was a 17th century history book which claimed that Columbus discovered America in 1491. Made the front page of the Daily News.

Garbage day in Maine is a disappointment. Nobody throws out anything.

in my experience 'garbage' tends to refer to food waste that would smell bad if you didn't attend to it....while 'trash' tends to mean the non-smelly things you throw out--even if they go in the same can/bin. (and some people keep separate containers for them in the house...my mother did). Then when they go out for collection, they all end up in the same BIG container.

But it is a matter of the context in which the word is used. If someone asks "when is the trash collection?", you'd assume they meant garbage & trash together.

And the new category the last number of years is 'recycling', so now we (in a big city) must keep certain plastic, metal, and paper in different bins. And various cities have different rules and procedures.

Life used to be much simpler...

Bill D:
Yes, life was much simpler then, vegetable matter & some paper waste would go on the compost pile. Glass would be recycled (through deposits, or jam making). Paper & cardboard would be used for starting your coal fire. Most other household waste would be burnt on the coal fire.
This just left your standard metal trash can as an 'Ash can'

The rubbish is as complex (or simple) as our lives!

Apart from the 'Dust' you put in the 'Dustcan' for the 'Dustman'!

"Now My old man's a Dustman, he wears a Dustman's hat!"

....

I say! I say! I say!
