Subject: ADD: My Song of the Sea From: Andrea Dale Date: 11 Oct 98 - 03:03 PM I am in search of who wrote a song that I learned in middle school, three part harmony (SAT). I now do an a cappella version. It's quite short, here's the first two verses ----------- "My Song of the Sea?" "My song of the sea, you bring me a memory of faces and voices that call me. I find myself yearning for places I used to be, chasing the morning and wandering free. Come and sail on the water and follow a star, for tomorrow is calling and we must be gone. For we must be sailing to know where we are, we are ships on the sea, and must keep moving on . . ." ------------ As I am would like to put this on my current recording project, I am bit desperate to find the author, and copyright ownership. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Please email me if you can help! Thank you, Andrea Dale adale@ix.netcom.com |
Subject: RE: Who wrote it? "Song of The Sea" From: GUEST,Gwyn Date: 19 Jul 04 - 04:42 PM Raymond R. Hannisian is the one who wrote it...I have the first three pages of sheet music but no more. Subject: RE: Who wrote it? "Song of The Sea" From: GUEST,Randomteen Date: 19 Jul 04 - 04:46 PM Seabird calling, gull wind laughing Leave the tired shell on shore Sun dance shining, all are saying Come to fly the waves once more. Speckled eagle on the wing From the ledge the seal-men sing Oh la lady lady loo Oh la lady lady low Too long sighing, too long parted From your ancient wat'ry home Come to singing, come to freedom Once again the sea to roam Deep and green the fishes throng From the ledge the seal-men's song Oh la lady lady loo Oh la lady lady low |
Subject: RE: Who wrote it? 'Song of The Sea' From: Joe Offer Date: 19 Jul 04 - 05:53 PM This Google Search will take you to several sources for Hannisian's "Song of the Sea." Apparently, Hannisian wrote two very popular choral works, "song of the Sea" and "Movin' On". That's all I was able to find out about him. Anybody have full lyrics for these two pieces? Randomteen, is that part of the same song, or what's that you posted? -Joe Offer- |
Subject: RE: Who wrote it? 'Song of The Sea' From: Amos Date: 19 Jul 04 - 06:22 PM The Google search did not reveal any page with the lyrics on it for public reading, although it leads to a number of sites offering sheet music. Strange so well-known a song isn't written out somewhere. A |
Subject: RE: Who wrote it? 'Song of The Sea' From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 19 Jul 04 - 06:26 PM There are several "Song of the Sea." The one posted by Randomteen is copyright 1990 by Julia Lane. Complete lyrics at Song of the Sea Not what you want, but in Heart Songs, 1909, p. 67, is one with this 1st verse: A sailor's life is a roving life, It robbed me of my heart's delight, And caused me to lament and mourn, And sadly wait for his return. It ends with that verse common to several, "Go dig my grave both wide and deep, etc. etc. |
Subject: RE: Who wrote it? 'Song of The Sea' From: GUEST,Helena Date: 19 Jul 04 - 10:27 PM Wow, the words to the Julia Lane version are BEAUTIFUL! Does anyone know where can I find the tune? |
Subject: RE: Who wrote it? 'Song of The Sea' From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 19 Jul 04 - 11:06 PM Julia Lane's delivery is individual and haunting. In "Song of the Sea," a mood is set but there is scarcely a melody in the normal sense. There is a good sound clip at Excerpts |
Subject: RE: Who wrote it? 'Song of The Sea' From: AllisonA(Animaterra) Date: 21 Jul 04 - 06:55 AM I go to J.W. Pepper for all my choral needs. If you go to their search site here and put "song of the sea" (no quotes) under title and Hannisian under Composer you can even hear a Real Audio clip of the song. A single copy would be very inexpensive to buy, and besides, if you're going to record it you need to buy a copy for every singer. It sounds like a lovely song! Allison |
Subject: RE: Who wrote it? 'Song of The Sea' From: GUEST,Kaytie Date: 29 Oct 04 - 06:50 PM I am singing that song now in my high school choir. We are doing it for our performing arts festival. It seems awefully fun, and I do indeed enjoy the song. I am in our choirs soprano section, so we have the first part... the high part... actually, that is the high part, but not the first part... the baratones have the firsy part... ""Gone are the days when I would go traveling Over the sea as a sailor..." and it goes on from there. |

Subject: RE: Who wrote it? 'Song of The Sea' From: GUEST,carolineH Date: 19 Apr 08 - 11:13 PM To whomever is still following this: For awhile I had been trying to find a completed recording for this song and I just found my middle school county chorus copy of it. The flute is a little sharp, and the boy's voices are quiet because many of them couldn't reach the notes (haha) but I have it if anyone would like it. |

Subject: RE: Origin: Song of the Sea (Ray Hannisian) From: GUEST Date: 25 Jan 09 - 12:49 AM There is a voice that has no name; It comes with evening or behind the rain: "I have no time now to stop and explain; I just keep moving' 'cause it helps to ease the pain." The night has music that calls to me Across canyons, of an endless sea. I seek the shadows of yesterday Today can't hold me, and I must be on my way. Speak to me softly but tell me no lies; I see tomorrow shining in your eyes. "I have no time now to stop and explain; I'm just movin' on to ease the pain." |

Subject: Rat River Trapper song of 1973 From: GUEST Date: 17 Sep 12 - 03:27 PM Marg in Ontario Hello to Belle - who listed the words to 'Rat River Trapper' that I am familiar with. That scratchy old lp you mentioned was probably the one put out by Tommy Banks and the Edmonton Symphony along with some great Canadian talent for the 1973 RCMP Centennial. I was able to get a copy from the CBC archives, along with several other really great tunes relating to the RCMP and the settling of our Canadian West and North. Too bad these tunes were not circulated more. We have some great stories to tell here in Canada, and we don't promote them enough. That's all I have to offer. If you are interested in the music, I'm sure the CBC Archives would be helpful. Best to all. |
