Good chocolate. Pantyhose that fit. A CD or book you really enjoy. A dress that fits you Just Right. Those comfy shoes you couldn't imagine living without. A favorite pet wanting your attention. Hummingbird feeders. Digital cameras. A DVD player so you can watch your favorite movie anytime you want. A trip to the beach to see the ocean waves.

A library card. It used to be free where I live. It's twelve dollars CDN a year now, but the best twelve bucks I've ever spent.
Of course, a fine fitting pair of panty hose is always welcome, and weiner dogs are well worth the money too.

The Rural Fire Brigade, good ice cream (not the crappy stuff), a pair of jeans in which the pockets last as long as the trousers, a hungi, good home brew (again, not the crappy stuff), a good book, a good instrument, and yes dianavan, children; worth every penny.

Books in charity shops. In fact anything in a charity shop you like enough to want to buy. You get what you want at a fraction of the price, and you make a donation to a good cuase.

And musical instruments are incredibly good value (at least if you steer clear of the one's with lottery winner prices).

Things that cost a lot of money, but are worth it if you can get it somehow:

A comfortable (not fancy) house in a neighborhood with good (not fancy) people in it.

A really good guitar.

A Subaru Legacy wagon w/all-wheel drive.

A dentist who can get you to age 62 with all your own teeth (every last one with at least a filling).

Things that cost some money, but not a lot, and are worth it:

A library card, if the library has a decent collection.

A DVD player, and a Teevee large enough to see but not so large it takes over.

An adequate stereo system.

A computer that you can access the net on.

A little good bourbon.

Rare beef.

Chocolate chip cookies.

Things that cost no money, and are worth a great deal:

A partner whom you love, who loves you in spite of knowing what your're really like.

Cats. (Yes, they cost to maintain, but you can usually get them free.)

The feeling when you perform for an audience and you actually get through to them.

Watching a child grow her way through a college education is worth the (excruciating) cost. Actually every step a child makes is worth the cost of making it possible. Listening to her play a masterful solo is worth years of new trumpets and lessons, and a hundredtimes that, to think that such beauty has come into the world with your help.

New strings, French Roast, a good haircut and a day on the Bay. Rented movies -- what an amazing ratio of effort in production to final cost to enjoy them!

And above all the magic of good books.

All of the above. But how about a computer operating system that simply does what you want it to do, no more, no less? It doesn't try to anticipate your needs by doing such things as making icons on a toolbar disappear because you don't use them all that often, and then, when you do need them, they're not there anymore; or assume that some unusual format you used for on document is the format you want to use for all documents; or when you change the size of an unmaximized window, every window you pop up from then on is the same size (and insists on staying that size no matter what you do); will recognize all the devices you have attached to your computer (such as a 3 ½" floppy drive, which someone somewhere has decided is obsolete), not just the ones that have been installed within the past three months; and on, and on, an on ad nauseum? Windows XP has a lot going for it, but it tends to wander off into traffic like a two-year-old child (as in "the terrible twos").

(Bill Gates probably uses a Mac.)

Midchuck, What a very nice thing to say about your dentist! Not everyone can see the value of the dentist until it is too late! Grandkids, travel experiences, music that brings joy to other people, Getting people to smile or laugh.

Doing the right thing by other people. I have a fellow who mows my grass for me, and he has a wife who is bedfast with a serious illness. He works 2 jobs to make ends meet. He also has a daughter who has spina bifida, and in addition to that she has such severe dental problems that almost all her teeth are past any fixing and need to be surgically removed. He has three other dentists who are his clients who won't offer to help him with her problems He asked me if I would let him work off the bill to get her some help.   I have taken this case on to completely solve her dental problems, and by rights the bill would be about $5000. I am charging him nothing as the joy of doing the right thing is payment enough. He nor she expected something for nothing. It is nice to be able to help them

Don Firth, don't know if he uses a Mac, but his house was designed and drawn using the old hand drawn method (James Cutler Architects) and his Gatehouse was designed and drawn using a Mac.

Glad to see the Legacy Wagon is worth the money! I just blew the 2nd transmission in my 17 year old Buick station wagon, so I bit the bullet and I just bought a Legacy GT wagon last week. Not totally brand new, but new to me and I'm impressed so far. Just can't wait til next winter to use the heated seats and see if it can really manage to get up our driveway in the snow. I'm getting too old to haul provisions using shank's pony.

My OS does what I want it to and always has (at home, I mean) 'S why I am so partial to it; OS X, the next generation of computer-based ability.

In fact that is surely one of the things that has always been worth the money -- every time I sit down in front of my Mac it gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling and backs it up with clean, timely execution. It's beauty, mate!

Membership in the Folklore Society of Greater Washington. In addition to the good company, you get reduced admission to virtually all FSGW events, and 10 FREE concerts each year! Best entertainment bargain in town!

BTW, I agree about the Subaru -- my '92 Legacy wagon is pushing 200,000 miles and still going strong, even with 2 or 3 round-trips between Maryland and Maine each year! My next car will definitely be a new Subaru!

This is thread drift about dentists, so don't read it if you don't want to hear it.

I agree that a good dentist is worth every penny. My daughter was born with perfectly straight teeth and no decay during her childhood. Unfortunately, her teeth were discoloured (some were nearly brown) and I was a student at university with no money. The dentist recommended porcelain bonds. Yikes! When I told him I didn't have the money, he said there was no way he would let her go to high school with the less than perfect smile she deserved. He bonded all of her teeth and let me pay whatever I could afford each month. Sometimes it was $10.00, sometimes it was $50.00. It took me over two years to pay for the work but I did. We still go to him today. It was a good investment for all of us.

I was also in danger of losing all of my teeth according to three different dentists. I was looking at some very major surgery as well. This same dentist looked at my teeth and said he would be very surprized if I didn't have all my teeth until the day I died. It took monthly visits for two years but I still have all my teeth, thanks to him.

Some dentists are worth their weight in gold.

Although I guess I speak for all dentists here, it is nice to hear the other side of all the dentist comments I was a dental phobic prior to going to dental school, and although there are lots of dentists who have great technical skills, there are not enough of us who have truly walked in the shoes of the patients to appreciate their fears and concerns.
