Subject: Barbara Cheer-ups: Daydream From: Ralph Butts Date: 31 Aug 98 - 09:01 AM Daydream Lovin' Spoonful
What a day for a daydream
It's one of those days for taking a walk outside I'm blowing the day to take a walk in the sun And fall on my face on somebody's new-mown lawn
I've been having a sweet dream
I couldn't care less about the dues you say I got Tomorrow I'll pay the dues for dropping my load A pie in the face for being a sleep'n bull doag {Whistle}
And you can be sure that if you're feeling right
What a day for a daydream

Subject: Lyr Add: DAYDREAM (John Sebastian) From: Steve Parkes Date: 22 Jun 04 - 11:43 AM I never quite got all the words to this, and after thirty years, it's time I did. I'm confident about this much: What a day for a daydream What a day for a daydreamin' boy And I'm lost in a daydream Dreamin' 'bout my bundle of joy And even if time ain't really on my side It's one of those days for taking a walk outside I'm blowing the day to take a walk in the sun And fall on my face on somebody's new-mown lawn I've been having a sweet dream I been dreaming since I woke up today It's starring me and my sweet dream 'Cause she's the one makes me feel this way And even if time is passing me by a lot I couldn't care less about the dues you say I got Tomorrow I'll pay the dues for dropping my load A pie in the face for being a sleepy [? ? ?] (Whistle) And you can be sure that if you're feeling right A daydream will last long into the night Tomorrow at breakfast you may prick up your ears Or you may be daydreaming for a thousand years ... From what I've seen with Google, nobody else seems quite sure what the mystery pie-in-the-face expression is: bull toad, bull doag, bo-do... Anybody know for sure? Steve |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Daydream (John Sebastian) From: clueless don Date: 22 Jun 04 - 11:47 AM I have no actual knowledge, but just based on my memory of listening to the song on the radio, it sounded to me like "sleepy full Joe". Don |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Daydream (John Sebastian) From: Steve Parkes Date: 23 Jun 04 - 03:39 AM If it's in the sheet music, Lanfranc, it must be correct! I suppose they have a lot of sleepy bull toads in the US? (Or is it just a handy rhyme?!) Steve |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Daydream (John Sebastian) From: Cool Beans Date: 23 Jun 04 - 02:39 PM Never mind what the sheet music says. To me, it always sounded like vo-do, as in vo-do-dee-oh-do, a comon refrain from a musical era John Sebastian has always been fond of. But what do I know? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Daydream (John Sebastian) From: GUEST,Pearn Date: 24 Jun 04 - 01:50 AM I have have seen it printed several times as "a sleepy Mo-jo" but I guess you have to be american to understand the meaning (if it is correct). |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Daydream (John Sebastian) From: Steve Parkes Date: 24 Jun 04 - 05:57 AM If' it is "Mojo", then "pie in the face" would be a euphemism for...? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Daydream (John Sebastian) From: Jim Dixon Date: 27 Jun 04 - 01:28 AM From http://www.guntheranderson.com/v/data/daydream.htm (and about 92 other sites) "A pie in the face for being a sleepy bull toad." From http://www.theguitarguy.com/daydream.htm "... a sleepy ol' toad." From http://www.carlinamerica.com/titles/titles.cgi?MODULE=LYRICS&ID=33&terms=Pop "...a sleepy boy toad." From http://lyricsplayground.com/alpha/songs/d/daydreamvarious.shtml "...a sleepy bull doag. (=bulldog?)" |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Daydream (John Sebastian) From: M.Ted Date: 27 Jun 04 - 11:21 PM "Sleepy bull toad" is right, having heard Mr. Sebastian sing it on numerous occasions--and yes, Mr. Parkes, there are sleepy bull toads hereabouts, though sadly, not as many as in the old days-- |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Daydream (John Sebastian) From: GUEST,Phil Leith Date: 07 May 10 - 11:12 AM Finally decided to learn this song for my guitar playing forrays (I've always loved it). Until today, I always thought it was "asleep before Joe"... I guess I thought "Joe" was resentful that John got more sleep than he did or something. :-) Never would have guessed "Sleepy Bull Toad" ... not a term I've ever heard. But it works. Also "It's starring me and in my sweet dream" ... that's what I'd always heard. But yesterday I was wondering a little if it might've been "Just her and me in my sweet dream", which would jive better with the next line ... but really it does sound much more like "It's starring me in my sweet dream" ... although I did see here where it was interpreted "It's starring me AND my sweet dream" - which also jives with the next line. Probably correct. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Daydream (John Sebastian) From: DonMeixner Date: 07 May 10 - 11:58 AM With John Sebastian, words and phrases were meant to be metaphors and pictures. I guess just like everybody elses lyrics were and are. I have never heard of a "Sleepy Bull Toad" before I heard this song but I knew what he meant when I heard it. I have never seen a Buttermilk Sky but I can imagine one. There is a lot of Jug Band in whatever Sebastian did. Before The Lovin' Spoonful he was in The Even Dozen Jug Band and he played with some of the best of the Jug Band rejuvenators of the 60's. A little country color was bound to sneak into his lyrics o matter what he was writing. Don |
