Subject: Song Suggestion (Jewish/Celtic wedding)? From: GUEST,j Date: 29 Jun 04 - 07:38 PM hi everyone, my first post to the board. i am getting married this year and the ceremony will be officiated by a rabbi and cantor. my background is scotch-irish. i am looking for a celtic song or two the cantor could sing that is more traditional than contemporary. preferably something that would work a cappella. also, nothing too overtly religious. i recently discovered some sean-nos music and absolutely love it. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

Subject: RE: Song Suggestion (Jewish/Celtic wedding)? From: greg stephens Date: 29 Jun 04 - 07:47 PM Mose Ri Tooraliay is the subject of a discussion at the moment. In view of the ethnic mix of your ceremony it might be ideal. If you flip down the list of current subjects, you'll see it. Well, I'm only joking really, but it's not every day we are all discussing a Jewish-Irish song, and somebody turns up asking for one! |

Subject: RE: Song Suggestion (Jewish/Celtic wedding)? From: GUEST,j Date: 29 Jun 04 - 08:39 PM anyone know the origins/translation of this song (the melody is absolutely wonderful). It's the third track on this CD: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000005CTM/qid%3D1088555736/103-0820013-0187012 Iníon an Bhaoghailligh Ó bhí mé oíche taobh istigh Fhéil' Bhríde A' faire thíos ar a Mhullach Mhor, Agus tharlaigh an naoi díom a dtug mé gnaoi dí Mar bhí sí caoghmhaoil, lách álainn óg. Sí go cinnte a mhearaigh m'intinn Agus liach na bhFiann ó, ní leigheasfadh mé, Agus tá mo chroí istigh 'na mhíle píosaí Mura bhfaighim cead síneadh lena brollach glé'il. A chailín donn deas a chuaigh i gcontúirt, Orú, druid anall liom agus tabhair domh póg Agus dá mbíodh mo mhuintir uilig i bhfeirg liom Nár chuma liomsa a mhíle stór. A mhíle grá tá cách a rá liom Gur don ghrá ort a gheobhaidh mé bás, Agus níl lá margaidh a mbíodh sna Gearaltaigh Ná bhfaigheann cúfathmhuinneach agus mise ag ól. Is fada 'n lá breá ó thug mé grá duit, Agus mé 'mo pháiste bheag óg gan chéill 'S gura leatsa shiúlfainnse cnoic 's gleanntáinn, 'S go Baile 'n Teampaill dá mbiodh sé romham. Ach anois ó tá mise curtha cráite 'S gur lig mé páirt mhór de mo rún le gaoth, A Rí tá i bParrthgas ó déan domh fárus I ngleanntáin áilne lena taobh. |

It used to sound marvellous when she announced herself on the 'phone as Zarin Westerburg! FC |

Subject: RE: Song Suggestion (Jewish/Celtic wedding)? From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 30 Jun 04 - 09:26 PM Well, I don't know about it being right for the cantor, but if you've a klezmer band at the reception, Eileen Oge is a tune that'd sound great played that way. And for the cantor, you could do a lot worse than Morning has broken |

Subject: RE: Song Suggestion (Jewish/Celtic wedding)? From: GUEST,j Date: 30 Jun 04 - 11:24 PM thanks for the suggestions... i'm very curious to know more about Iníon an Bhaoghailligh. as i said before, the melody is exquisite and sung sean-nos. so far i'm not finding anything online regarding a translation. hopefully someone will have something to contribute. |
