Subject: BS: Georgiansilver is mad! From: Sooz Date: 04 Jul 04 - 05:41 AM Our very own Georiansilver is probably heading for Ben Nevis right now. You might not think that is particularly barmy, but since Friday morning he has "done" Snowdon (North Wales), Carrantouhill (Irish Republic) and Slieve Donard (Ulster) and has Scafell Pike still to do. This is the Five Peaks Challenge, (the highest points in each bit of the British Isles). He has taken nine youngsters to do the actual walking while he drives the mini-bus and cooks the food. They will have walked 37 miles with 15,495 feet of ascent by the time they come home and raised a fair bit of money for the St John Ambulance and for their own drop-in centre which does a lot of good work with the young people of Gainsborough. Well done, Mike - hope you have recovered in time for the club on Friday! |

Subject: RE: BS: Georgiansilver is mad! From: Liz the Squeak Date: 04 Jul 04 - 07:41 AM Well, if he isn't mad now, he will be when he gets back! I'm not sure which would be worst, walking up those 5 peaks or sitting in a minibus with 9 kids! I hope all goes well, and they raise lots of dosh and he comes back a happy and fulfilled man. Good luck to all of them. LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: Georgiansilver is mad! From: Strollin' Johnny Date: 04 Jul 04 - 03:52 PM I've done a similar exercise with a cramped and aged minibus-full of 13-16 year-olds and a few grumpy old men (one of the grumpy old men accompanying Georgiansilver on his current venture), and it ain't no picnic (except in the sense that most of the participants meals have to be taken outdoors)! He has my wholehearted admiration, he's a hero and an effin' nice guy too. As he blesses us, may he also be blessed! :0) Johnny :0) |

Subject: RE: BS: Georgiansilver is mad! From: GUEST,Appreciated Date: 06 Jul 04 - 12:41 PM Well, after two full days of either travelling to or climbing high peaks,we are well and truly back... I appreciate some of your sentiments and fully admit to being mad. The venture through sponsorship will have raised in the region of three thousand pounds for the St Johns Ambulance and "The Hand of Friendship" charity in Gainsborough. I have to tell you that the youngest of the kids was around 24yrs old and I was the oldest at 56. The trip itself bore with it a large amount of sleep deprivation, as it was continuous and those climbing could only take sleep in the minibus between mountains. Ferry delay meant that we took longer than the anticipated 50 hours but all five mountains were climbed by at least four of the original crew(ie...four climbed all five peaks) where eight actually made the attempt. Many thanks to "SOOZ" and "Travelling Audience" and "Strollin Johnny" for sponsoring us(along with many others at Gainsborough Folk Club) Will collect the money this Friday at the club. Thanks all and "Be Blessed" |

Subject: RE: BS: Georgiansilver is mad! From: GUEST,Richard. Date: 06 Jul 04 - 07:50 PM Anyone who is reading this....I have contacted Georgiansilver and offered to donate money to the causes he is supporting because he is a mudcatter and we should support him. How about it??? who will help the charities he is workingt for?? He will give you an address to post money to if you want to donate anything. PM him. Richard |

Subject: RE: BS: Georgiansilver is mad! From: Georgiansilver Date: 06 Jul 04 - 08:00 PM Richard I thank you for your support but it is up to the people concerned here...it is not necessarily a Mudcat thing. If people wish to give it is their choice but most Mudcatters will not know of the "Hand of Friendship" even if they know of St Johns Ambulance. Be Blessed. |

Subject: RE: BS: Georgiansilver is mad! From: Georgiansilver Date: 06 Jul 04 - 09:28 PM Strollin Johnny...I really thank you for your support and for your encouraging comments and acknowledge you as a Gentleman of the Folk circuit as well as a Gentleman in your own right. Be Blessed. |

Subject: RE: BS: Georgiansilver is mad! From: GUEST,Jon Date: 06 Jul 04 - 10:03 PM I guess so open mike... I tend to think of a bin liner as the black plastic bag we use for the outside rubbish but there are others. As for "lost" - probably more easily done than realised (and I've no doubt Georginsilver can tell you more that I know - I've never been an experienced walker). I just lived in N Wales for many years. The peaks there, although small, can have weather turn on you in no time and a mountain in bright sunshine is completely diffierent to a hostile one where mist comes down... MaganL sounds as if she knows what I mean, and round that part of N Wales I lived in, it was pretty much a given that someone would find a way of loosing thier life - maybe on the sea, maybe diving into an icy cold lake on a hot day, maybe on the mountains each year... |
