...my youngest daughter (catter Bugface) is marrying in Austria early September. initially I thought I couldn't get there, but have now decided I'll be going to Austria for the wedding. I'd like to nick across to the UK sometime mid-late August to hear some music...so hopefully I'll get to meet some of you, if we're around at the same places!

Kitty, you beat me to it, Freda Whitby is the biggest and best celebration of British music in the world, about 800 organised hoursof singing, music and dance in numerous venues across this beautiful sea port, still part traditional fishing town, part tourist resort. Surrounded by moors the location is wonderful.
Then there's the fringe !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Freda: let me put in a word for Nantwich Folk Festival. August 27-29. Nantwich is a little old black-and white (architecture, not ethnicity) town in cheshire, northwest England. very close to M6 (how are you going to be travelling?). This is the main north-south drag, London a short 4 hours, Glasgow or Edinburgh a slightly longer 4 hours.
   One advantage of going to the festival would be the chance of seeing some of the refugee musicians that you and I have written about in various threads recently. (Though maybe you've seen enough refugees in your life already?).
    I am sure you will have a wonderful trip wherever you go, judging by the information and offers pouring in.

Linda (Essex Girl) and I live in SE London - just across the river from Khatt/Micca and Liz/Manitas. We're also not too far from Jacqi or the Kentish mob: Barden of England, Richard Bridge, Dead Horse etc. Assuming that we're not away at a festival, our caravan will be parked in the drive and available for occupation, but I have to confess that Avril Betts has slept in it on various occasions !

Last years main guest artist was Eric Bogle, this year I think it's Colcannon. It's a great festival.

Greg, I would love to go to that festival, and to meet your friends - I think I'm going to have to clone myself before I go so I get to do everything - & Dave, I especially, more than anything want to meet Avril Betts. I have replied to your pms, Khatt and Moses, and would love to take up your offers. I hope that I can meet people at a session or two before the long weekend, and at this stage am not sure which festival to go to. afterwards I could go up to visit jacqui, and perhaps further north for a couple of days. I would like to go to scotland if I can, being half scottish, a few generations back. my great grandfather, James Wallace, brought the first tug boats to Sydney harbour. my mother was elsie jean wallace - can't get more scottish than that.

more than anything I will have to work out what tickets I get and fit in with my daughter (she hasn't checked her email yet, so doesn't know!)

Great news, freda - a bed available at our place also - and lift from H'row too. We are in Chesham, Bucks, 5 miles west-northwest from the M25 (London orbital m'way), and 30 minutes from Heathrow.

Good for daytrips into London (last stop on the underground's Metropolitan Line), visits to England's oldest single-venue club (the legendary Herga) on Monday nights for cracking singers nights, or Maidenhead fc on Thursday nights.

It seems you already have a lot of early-bird responses from the Mudcatters in and around London and that's great if that's where you want to go. Do you?
Alternatively, if you wish to visit elsewhere there are lots of us located all around the country! For instance, I am in Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire, with its Shakespeare connection and there are lots of things to do and people to meet around here too.
Although the middle/end of August is not the easiest time of the year, with all its festivals etc, I responded to Naemanson's thread on visiting the UK like this!
I hope it all goes well for you!

Hi Giok, andy and mr H - thank you all for your comments, i hope i get to meet with you. that Nantwich one is very enticing - i have started the process of getting quotes for airfares, and also am running around getting some documents that my daughter needs for her visa extension, going from office to office dealing with sometimes particularly unhelpful bureaucrats.

in the meantime i have an extra two cats to babysit - my neighbour (a muso) is off gigging until monday. i've started thinking about my cat delly and how she's going to cope without me.

i won't finalise airfares for a few days, after that i'll start plotting the trip in greater detail!

Hi all

just thought I'd let you know that I have spoken to my daughter tonight (in the chat room) and have sorted out my initial tentative schedule with her approval. I will be going to Austria around the 14th of August, and hope to fly to London arriving around the 20th. I will stay in London til the 26th, with Moses and Khatt and Micca, each for a couple of days. Ive decided to go to towersey, and look forward to meeting some catters there.   so between 20th & 26th I'll be hoping to check out London, including any sessions that people recommend. i have a friend, Rosie, who's in London right now - but I havent been able to get in touch with her as yet. If I can, i will probably stay with her for a couple of days too, that would be two days each. if i can get up to see jacqui c, thats a possibility as well, if it all fits in, and El greko i would love to meet you, and your family, if you have an afternoon or evening.

I'm hoping for a session in the Black Lion Pub, especially since Ive written about it in Vlad. I'd like to go to any other sessions/folk clubs that are happening while I'm there as well. Basically, I love sessions, and will always be happy at one.

anyway, this is all still tentative because the tickets are not yet booked. I will let you know as soon as I hear more (I'm trying to track down Rosie - she's not responding to her emails!! - Leadfingers, do you have Rosie's phone number by any chance? if so, could you pass it on to me?

I will keep you all in touch, as details firm up - Ive yet to finalise tickets.

While Uncle Ted and his mates were gambling, and Ted laid the winning card
The spuds were all crispy and fluffy, and the onions were sizzling sweet!
The pudding was boiling in calico, while the plonk was aflowing a treat

we all sat round, joking and whispering, while mum laid out the turkey with style
Dad carved up each slice as we fidgeted, Uncle Ted with some drool on his dial
Then up spoke old grannie, quite loudly, (she was deaf we all knew in one ear)
Saying this year there's going to be changes – and she skolled a full schooner of beer.

Her old grey eyes flashing with anger, as she looked with contempt and then cursed:
"You dare to wish me 'merry Christmas'? You just hear my story first.
Sixty years ago, in the summer, I came here an innocent bride,
With your old grandpa Kevin, I thought it was heaven, but within ten tough long years he had died.

For fifty sad years I've suffered, through bushfires, through floods and through drought
She eyed off old Ted, leaned across to his head, and gave the poor bastard a clout.

Then grannie stood up at the table, as we sat there, all raising our glass
The carving knife high, she saluted the sky, and sliced off the turkey's arse.
I never did like that old parson, his nose will go down a real treat

Have a wonderful trip. Should you find yourself in Oxford, Pitlochry Woolens has very nice sweaters etc. very cheap. As everyone will tell you, J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and Dorothy L. Sayers did their drinking at the Lamb and Flag. The Trout serves excellent food, and they have a lovely view.
Should you find yourself in London, have a nice drool at the costume collection in the V and A.

My daughter has left me a garbled message telling me flights to and from London from Klagenfurt, so by tomorrow I hope to have them translated and confirmed with her, and to have worked out my actual times of arrival and departure from London.

Yes, you were right Giok, I won't be going north this time. I'm very much looking forward to it all, however, and to roaming about here and there. My potent memories from last time are - hydrangeas and strawberries - the australian copies are mere cardboard, compared to their British versions.

That's great news, micca, thank you again! I just bought a new back pack today. my old one, over 15 years old, literally fell apart on me on the street. glad it did it here and not in some street in Shanghai (I have a stopover there for one night in the way! - Pu Dong?)

I have just listened to my daughter's message again, it was quite intelligible. just my brain, late last night, wasn't computing! I'll be passing through London, on my way to Austria, on 16th August when I arrive at Heathrow at 11.50. I'll be travelling the next day from Stansted at 9.20 am to Klagenfurt (Austria)where I'll stay for a week. then I will be arriving at Stansted airport on Sat 21st at 1.50 pm', via Ryan Air. I can get a bus or train there to somewhere closer, I'm not sure at this stage where Stansted is, apart from it being in London. I'm booked to go back to Austria (for the wedding) on September 1 at 9.20 am from Stansted again.

I'm putting all this in in case anyone of those who offered to put me up are near Stansted for those two overnighters. Otherwise, I'll have a loud alarm & be up early to travel that way, I imagine there'll be shuttle buses from Heathrow.

So, is there any music in London on a Saturday night? (21st August?)!!

Micca, Catsphiddle, Leadfingers & Moses, I'll pm you all individually now that I have these times. Jacqui - is Stansted anywhere near you?

Stansted takes about 40 minutes to get to from ours by bus or by car, it also has a good rail link ...Liverpool Street to Stansted Airport if that is any use to you Freda.

Bridgnorth is the same w/e as Towersey, lovely town, festival in a school - but that means the dancing is inside on a proper floor and the concerts are in a big margquee &/or an auditorium. It is on a chrming steam railway which connects to the mainline trains at Kidderminster Station.

i looked at my first post to this thread, which was a hope that i could meet with some of you here and there. it has turned out much better than that - i now have some plans and points of contact, and have spoken on the phone to micca and to jacqui.

I'll be at the Black Lion on the 22nd, 3-5, at Herga on the 23rd, Sharps on 24th and going to towersey on thursday 26th, returning to austria on wed 1st september.

monday 23rd - Wed 25th are free during the day, with a possible trip to oxford to see clean supper on one of those days..

I'm planning to get to The Black Lion on the 22nd - Linda (Essex Girl) will not be getting back from Spain until much later that night so I'll have plenty of time before I have to pick her up from Gatwick.

We might be able to make Sharps - I assume it will be at "The Exmouth Arms" that evening as CSH shuts for August.

We will also probably be turning up at Towersey - but only for the Barn and Pub sessions.

hi all

i have just spent a wonderful day in Ferndorf, Corinthia, southern austria. the trip here was a wipe out - the flight to shanghai was late in and i arrived late at night. due to the late arrival i missed seeing shanghai celtic at his irish pub there - i have a cd for you frank, so will have to deliver it another way ! i spent a morning in the markets in the city, and then another 12 hr flight to london, to cat and miccas. we raved until i crawled off to sleep - and I heard some beautiful music including linda kelly singing a song of miccas, and a stunning version of lowands by Morticia. i look forward very much to the singing and the company! thanks dave for your thoughtful offer - london is a biig place!!!

my bottom is just starting to feel normal again after two days in a torturous airoplane seat (yes, I'm sure you were concerned)and i have spent the afternoon walking with my daughter through a very beautiful landscape where chamomile and apple trees grow wild, past fields of corn, and surrounded by mountains, mountains and mountains, and talking, talking talking . austria is a dream - very beautiful - and i am pleased for her that she has a wonderful life here.

here i am in austria typing on that strange euröpean kezboard.

austria is the most beautiful country i have travelled to - it is unspoiled, traditional, and very environmentally aware. karala and i have done quite a bit of walking and talking thru the beautiful fields nearby. its hard to get time at the computer as i am continually being wined and dined. they took me to a castle for dinner last night, and a medieval festival. Today i saw two different arty towns nearby and karala was in a film shoot this avo.
i spent yesterday with karala and the family that she nannies for, walking and sunbathing by a beautful lake, surrounded by mountains. the gardens here are incredible. tonight alex and karala are entertaining business contacts (a film photographer and a
theatrical designer, who is also making karala's wedding dress) and so i have just finished dinner and snuck into the office.

alex's dutch father Freddie is fit, sun bronzed, and gregarious. He works every night at their pub nearby in the village, anneleise looks after it in the day. she is a very kind, sweet woman. they are both keen gardeners, anneliese does the flower garden and freddie the vegetable garden (he has a glasshouse and a smokehouse for smoking fish).

its monday late afternoon, i've just had a wondeful meal - cat is a very good cook. yesterday lunch at Liz the S and Paul's place was a treat - an orgy of delicious items - liz has obviously been a professional cook at some time i think. we sat in the garden talking, drinking while items were baking, and as micca said it wasnt the strain you might normally have meeting and getting to know new people - we know each other already. i had a great afternoon, thanks, liz n paul, and thought i would not need to eat for the next week, until i saw the beautiful items cat presented today.

the black lion was a hoot - and how good to be with a bunch of folkies singing again. songs were swapped and glasses emptied for several hours - how good to hear new songs, new versions. the mudcatters i met there were all fines singers with a great repertoire - it has whetted my appetite for the rest of the trip.

I'm just recovering from a great night at the Exmouth Arms. Freda was in very good voice, as was Mr Bryant who treated us to a rendition of 'I Live In Trafalgar Square', with dramatic enactments (I think they could probably hear him in Trafalgar Square as well!).

I just wish that it wasn't such a journey for me - didn't get home until 00.45 this morning.

hear i am back in austria after a sometimes hectic tour of sessions in london. the black lion, Herga, and Sharps will be great memories for me - i got to hear a lot of great singers, including El greko in person, and have come away with a bunch of excellent cds. more than that, singular momemts include dave bryant singing gladiator,micca moving me to tears of laughter with innumerable parodies, and to other tears on occasion with songs from his trilogy, phot singing some great songs, jacquic's traditional songs, morticia singing anything, including a great song with pixi. dave and essex girl are a great combo, and i got to hear sussex carole and crane driver singing in the mythical barn at towersey. Moses, i look forward to hearing more of your singing, jacqui c, your kindness and optimism are a pleasure to be around, it was great to meet at last. i was cared for with great kindness by micca and khatt, and had the great pleasure of being dive bombed by morgana, the super-gymnastic kitten who can leap from great heights at a single bound. she kept me company on my last night in london, and nestled on me through the night. i left a couple of days ahead of plan, torn away by conflicting loyalties to my daughter and my wallet.

the most outstanding thing about uk folkies (and about just about anyone i met in the uk) is their wonderful sense of humour - it has been great to be around a bunch of very whacky people. (I'm back in austria now ... hmmm)

i will have some photos to add to dave's, but not til I get back to australia, next week.
