Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: greg stephens Date: 07 Jul 04 - 05:25 AM Freda: let me put in a word for Nantwich Folk Festival. August 27-29. Nantwich is a little old black-and white (architecture, not ethnicity) town in cheshire, northwest England. very close to M6 (how are you going to be travelling?). This is the main north-south drag, London a short 4 hours, Glasgow or Edinburgh a slightly longer 4 hours. One advantage of going to the festival would be the chance of seeing some of the refugee musicians that you and I have written about in various threads recently. (Though maybe you've seen enough refugees in your life already?). I am sure you will have a wonderful trip wherever you go, judging by the information and offers pouring in. |
Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: Moses Date: 07 Jul 04 - 05:36 AM Great news Freda I've PM'd you with my contact phone numbers etc. It would be really great to meet up again. Wherever you go, have a wonderful time. Any help I can give (transport, accomodation etc) just let me know. |
Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: Dave Bryant Date: 07 Jul 04 - 05:41 AM Linda (Essex Girl) and I live in SE London - just across the river from Khatt/Micca and Liz/Manitas. We're also not too far from Jacqi or the Kentish mob: Barden of England, Richard Bridge, Dead Horse etc. Assuming that we're not away at a festival, our caravan will be parked in the drive and available for occupation, but I have to confess that Avril Betts has slept in it on various occasions ! If you're planning to be in the London area, Linda And I would love to meet you. We should be going to Whitby. |
Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: Teribus Date: 07 Jul 04 - 06:01 AM Scottish connections, name of Wallace, you could trundle up to Irvine in Ayrshire for the Marymass Festival 19th August to 22nd August. Last years main guest artist was Eric Bogle, this year I think it's Colcannon. It's a great festival. |
Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: freda underhill Date: 07 Jul 04 - 06:02 AM thank you everyone - .. Yes, Lf, can I take you up on that offer to meet me at Heathrow - thanks so much. You'll have to look out for a big mama with long white hair and rosy cheeks. Greg, I would love to go to that festival, and to meet your friends - I think I'm going to have to clone myself before I go so I get to do everything - & Dave, I especially, more than anything want to meet Avril Betts. I have replied to your pms, Khatt and Moses, and would love to take up your offers. I hope that I can meet people at a session or two before the long weekend, and at this stage am not sure which festival to go to. afterwards I could go up to visit jacqui, and perhaps further north for a couple of days. I would like to go to scotland if I can, being half scottish, a few generations back. my great grandfather, James Wallace, brought the first tug boats to Sydney harbour. my mother was elsie jean wallace - can't get more scottish than that. more than anything I will have to work out what tickets I get and fit in with my daughter (she hasn't checked her email yet, so doesn't know!) your responses have great - thanks so much x freda |

Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: George Papavgeris Date: 07 Jul 04 - 07:04 AM Great news, freda - a bed available at our place also - and lift from H'row too. We are in Chesham, Bucks, 5 miles west-northwest from the M25 (London orbital m'way), and 30 minutes from Heathrow. Good for daytrips into London (last stop on the underground's Metropolitan Line), visits to England's oldest single-venue club (the legendary Herga) on Monday nights for cracking singers nights, or Maidenhead fc on Thursday nights. I'll PM you contact details. George |

Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: freda underhill Date: 07 Jul 04 - 07:50 AM that is wonderful George, it all sounds great. And the Black Lion, that would be fantastic, since I'm writing about the place in Vlad! I would love to go to the Herga or Maidenhead, and to hear you perform, and to meet your family. I think I'm going to draw a map of all the people and contacts and work it out from there! (still havent spoken to my daughter yet!!) freda |
Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: alanww Date: 07 Jul 04 - 02:08 PM Hiya freda It seems you already have a lot of early-bird responses from the Mudcatters in and around London and that's great if that's where you want to go. Do you? Alternatively, if you wish to visit elsewhere there are lots of us located all around the country! For instance, I am in Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire, with its Shakespeare connection and there are lots of things to do and people to meet around here too. Although the middle/end of August is not the easiest time of the year, with all its festivals etc, I responded to Naemanson's thread on visiting the UK like this! I hope it all goes well for you! "Clouds are upon a summer sky ...!" Alan |
Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: freda underhill Date: 07 Jul 04 - 07:00 PM thanks so much alan - i spoke to my daughter last night & where I go and what time depends on which tickets are cheapest - sydney UK or sydney Austria. your list of events was very helpful! freda |

Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: fiddler Date: 08 Jul 04 - 03:24 PM Well I can't make any offers as Aigust is pretty full and the work thing gets in the way so much - they are insisting I be there for nearly two weeks in August this year........... Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: freda underhill Date: 11 Jul 04 - 10:31 AM Hi all just thought I'd let you know that I have spoken to my daughter tonight (in the chat room) and have sorted out my initial tentative schedule with her approval. I will be going to Austria around the 14th of August, and hope to fly to London arriving around the 20th. I will stay in London til the 26th, with Moses and Khatt and Micca, each for a couple of days. Ive decided to go to towersey, and look forward to meeting some catters there. so between 20th & 26th I'll be hoping to check out London, including any sessions that people recommend. i have a friend, Rosie, who's in London right now - but I havent been able to get in touch with her as yet. If I can, i will probably stay with her for a couple of days too, that would be two days each. if i can get up to see jacqui c, thats a possibility as well, if it all fits in, and El greko i would love to meet you, and your family, if you have an afternoon or evening. I'm hoping for a session in the Black Lion Pub, especially since Ive written about it in Vlad. I'd like to go to any other sessions/folk clubs that are happening while I'm there as well. Basically, I love sessions, and will always be happy at one. anyway, this is all still tentative because the tickets are not yet booked. I will let you know as soon as I hear more (I'm trying to track down Rosie - she's not responding to her emails!! - Leadfingers, do you have Rosie's phone number by any chance? if so, could you pass it on to me? I will keep you all in touch, as details firm up - Ive yet to finalise tickets. best wishes freda |
Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: Herga Kitty Date: 11 Jul 04 - 11:37 AM Freda - if you make it to Herga on Monday 23 August, I'm afraid I'll probably miss you because I'll be in Whitby. But I'm aiming to be back in time to sing in the barn at Towersey sometime over the Bank Holiday weekend, so hope to see you there! Kitty |
Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: Charley Noble Date: 11 Jul 04 - 08:18 PM Freda- Looks like you're making some great contacts. Kendall Morse's thread had some pictures posted on what happened on his visit at the Black Lion. Looked like a great gang and lots of fun. And you can always offer reciprocity from your Sydney neighborhood. Kudy and I have fond memories of the restaurant around the corner and singing in the co-op commons. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: Liz the Squeak Date: 12 Jul 04 - 03:58 AM If you want to come to Towersey, let us know fairly soon as we would need to find you tickets, although if you don't want to do the whole weekend, there are day tickets. If you just want to come to the Barn to hear some amazing singing, you may be able to cadge a lift with one of the other Catters who pop in for the day - Manitas being a possible one..... LTS |
Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: GUEST,freda Date: 12 Jul 04 - 04:03 AM thanks very much, Liz, for thinking of this. Khatt has let me know about this, & I think they may be booking me a ticket in the next few days! I am just trying to secure a flight, right now, and have just found a very cheap one that I'm trying to get on to. and here's a little something for those of you who think australian's have no culture.. whipped it up last night!! 'Twas Christmas day in the chookhouse, and the chooks had been fattened a treat The men were out back, playing cricket , and the air was a shimmerin' with heat In the oven a turkey was sizzling, crammed with old breadcrumbs n stuff, And mum on her feet in the Aussie heat, and Cheryl was up the duff. And Dad was singing in the kitchen, Red Sails in the Sunset and more We told him to go to the chookhouse, and to yodel til the chooks all snore For dad's singing was rumoured hypnotic; twas said it would send you to sleep For whenever he warbled old grannie, passed out in the afternoon heat At one o'clock "Come an Get It" screamed mum from the back of the yard While Uncle Ted and his mates were gambling, and Ted laid the winning card The spuds were all crispy and fluffy, and the onions were sizzling sweet! The pudding was boiling in calico, while the plonk was aflowing a treat we all sat round, joking and whispering, while mum laid out the turkey with style Dad carved up each slice as we fidgeted, Uncle Ted with some drool on his dial Then up spoke old grannie, quite loudly, (she was deaf we all knew in one ear) Saying this year there's going to be changes – and she skolled a full schooner of beer. Her old grey eyes flashing with anger, as she looked with contempt and then cursed: "You dare to wish me 'merry Christmas'? You just hear my story first. Sixty years ago, in the summer, I came here an innocent bride, With your old grandpa Kevin, I thought it was heaven, but within ten tough long years he had died. For fifty sad years I've suffered, through bushfires, through floods and through drought She eyed off old Ted, leaned across to his head, and gave the poor bastard a clout. Then grannie stood up at the table, as we sat there, all raising our glass The carving knife high, she saluted the sky, and sliced off the turkey's arse. I never did like that old parson, his nose will go down a real treat With a cunning quite perky, she savaged the turkey, and slipped off in the evening heat. You can all go to buggery, you bastards, while you're at it you can take uncle Ted Then old grannie turned back, and she farted, then hobbled off slowly to bed. best wishes freda |

Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: jack halyard Date: 12 Jul 04 - 05:29 PM For god's sake, you poor bastards, don't let her sing the one about Lorena Bobbit. It's totally disgusting, immoral, dispicable and its only redeeming feature is it's funny. Make sure she doesn't lose her books and don't let the fact that she left her camera at home fool you, she's a closet-or at least handbag-lid-sketcher and they're all fearsomely accurate sketches. Unfortunately she's left a number of her more useful minders back here in Oz, so it's uncertain what may happen- particularly to Tony Blair.( perhaps I shouldn't mention him in the same context as Lorena Bobbit.) anyway, people of Britain, you have been warned. Jack Halyard. |

Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: LadyJean Date: 13 Jul 04 - 12:48 AM Have a wonderful trip. Should you find yourself in Oxford, Pitlochry Woolens has very nice sweaters etc. very cheap. As everyone will tell you, J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and Dorothy L. Sayers did their drinking at the Lamb and Flag. The Trout serves excellent food, and they have a lovely view. Should you find yourself in London, have a nice drool at the costume collection in the V and A. |
Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: freda underhill Date: 19 Jul 04 - 10:03 AM Hi LadyJean, thanks for your kind wishes and suggestions. My daughter has left me a garbled message telling me flights to and from London from Klagenfurt, so by tomorrow I hope to have them translated and confirmed with her, and to have worked out my actual times of arrival and departure from London. Yes, you were right Giok, I won't be going north this time. I'm very much looking forward to it all, however, and to roaming about here and there. My potent memories from last time are - hydrangeas and strawberries - the australian copies are mere cardboard, compared to their British versions. i'll post again tomorrow freda |
Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: Micca Date: 20 Jul 04 - 06:20 AM Freda, Good News, Your Towersey ticket has arrived!!!! |
Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: freda underhill Date: 20 Jul 04 - 09:54 AM That's great news, micca, thank you again! I just bought a new back pack today. my old one, over 15 years old, literally fell apart on me on the street. glad it did it here and not in some street in Shanghai (I have a stopover there for one night in the way! - Pu Dong?) I have just listened to my daughter's message again, it was quite intelligible. just my brain, late last night, wasn't computing! I'll be passing through London, on my way to Austria, on 16th August when I arrive at Heathrow at 11.50. I'll be travelling the next day from Stansted at 9.20 am to Klagenfurt (Austria)where I'll stay for a week. then I will be arriving at Stansted airport on Sat 21st at 1.50 pm', via Ryan Air. I can get a bus or train there to somewhere closer, I'm not sure at this stage where Stansted is, apart from it being in London. I'm booked to go back to Austria (for the wedding) on September 1 at 9.20 am from Stansted again. I'm putting all this in in case anyone of those who offered to put me up are near Stansted for those two overnighters. Otherwise, I'll have a loud alarm & be up early to travel that way, I imagine there'll be shuttle buses from Heathrow. So, is there any music in London on a Saturday night? (21st August?)!! Micca, Catsphiddle, Leadfingers & Moses, I'll pm you all individually now that I have these times. Jacqui - is Stansted anywhere near you? and i will have to polish off my vocal chords - I'm looking forward to sitting in a room, surrounded by voices and harmonies - and to meeting whoever of you I can! best wishes freda |
Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: Catherine Jayne Date: 20 Jul 04 - 10:54 AM Stansted takes about 40 minutes to get to from ours by bus or by car, it also has a good rail link ...Liverpool Street to Stansted Airport if that is any use to you Freda. |

So LadyJean, your hints may come in handy. paul, you have to get your ticket soon if its to be towersey. i had a very whacky dream last night - i dreamnt i was at towersey and my name was Muriel Twithington (shades of Hyacinth Buquet!!) freda |

We might be able to make Sharps - I assume it will be at "The Exmouth Arms" that evening as CSH shuts for August. We will also probably be turning up at Towersey - but only for the Barn and Pub sessions. |

Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: JennyO Date: 16 Aug 04 - 06:47 AM Well, I expect that freda would be on a plane heading UK-wards even as we speak, having had one night's stopover in Shanghai. I believe there was a possibility of her meeting up with Shanghaiceltic. Now I'm not sure when she said she was landing at Heathrow on 11.50 on the 16th, whether she meant am or pm - and I assume she meant UK time. If it was am, she'd be landing in the next few minutes, actually. Anyway freda, I've refreshed this thread for you, in case you have a chance to get on here tonight, even in chat. We are 9 hours ahead of the UK here in Sydney - it's about 8.40pm here. Jenny |
Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: Scooby Doo Date: 16 Aug 04 - 07:01 AM Yes Freda have a great time in the UK.It was good talking to you the other day. |
Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: Dave Bryant Date: 16 Aug 04 - 07:46 AM Fiddler - just to point out that the 22nd Aug is next Sunday, not Saturday. I assume that the Black Lion session is still on - I don't need to get to Gatwick to pick up Linda and family until about 10.30pm - so I should have plenty of time - in fact my main time restraint will be that Blackwall Tunnel closes southbound at 9pm. |
Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: Catherine Jayne Date: 16 Aug 04 - 08:12 AM Yes the Black Lion Session is still on on sunday 22nd from 3pm. Andy (Fiddler) if you want to stay over we have room for you...let me know!! Micca is picking Freda up from the airport this evening. She lands about 7pm so should be with us in East London about 9pm...ish. |

Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: JennyO Date: 16 Aug 04 - 11:24 PM Hey cats and Micca, when she wakes up (I assume she's sleeping), could you ask her if she will be able to access her email (the usual home one) while she is away? I forgot to ask her. I have an interesting little titbit of news for her about a certain ex of mine, for one thing, and it would be handy to know anyway. Jenny |
Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: Dave Bryant Date: 17 Aug 04 - 04:46 AM You could always PM her. |
Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: JennyO Date: 17 Aug 04 - 09:41 AM I know that Dave, but she was a bit doubtful about putting cookies on other people's machines. She was concerned about whether they would mind, so if she doesn't do it, she won't see any PMs. Jenny |
Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: freda underhill Date: 17 Aug 04 - 01:31 PM hi all i have just spent a wonderful day in Ferndorf, Corinthia, southern austria. the trip here was a wipe out - the flight to shanghai was late in and i arrived late at night. due to the late arrival i missed seeing shanghai celtic at his irish pub there - i have a cd for you frank, so will have to deliver it another way ! i spent a morning in the markets in the city, and then another 12 hr flight to london, to cat and miccas. we raved until i crawled off to sleep - and I heard some beautiful music including linda kelly singing a song of miccas, and a stunning version of lowands by Morticia. i look forward very much to the singing and the company! thanks dave for your thoughtful offer - london is a biig place!!! my bottom is just starting to feel normal again after two days in a torturous airoplane seat (yes, I'm sure you were concerned)and i have spent the afternoon walking with my daughter through a very beautiful landscape where chamomile and apple trees grow wild, past fields of corn, and surrounded by mountains, mountains and mountains, and talking, talking talking . austria is a dream - very beautiful - and i am pleased for her that she has a wonderful life here. jenny - as you can see i am logged in here and receiving pms - over and out! cant use the compüter much here so.... talk soon! xfreda |

Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: freda underhill Date: 20 Aug 04 - 12:02 PM here i am in austria typing on that strange euröpean kezboard. austria is the most beautiful country i have travelled to - it is unspoiled, traditional, and very environmentally aware. karala and i have done quite a bit of walking and talking thru the beautiful fields nearby. its hard to get time at the computer as i am continually being wined and dined. they took me to a castle for dinner last night, and a medieval festival. Today i saw two different arty towns nearby and karala was in a film shoot this avo. i spent yesterday with karala and the family that she nannies for, walking and sunbathing by a beautful lake, surrounded by mountains. the gardens here are incredible. tonight alex and karala are entertaining business contacts (a film photographer and a theatrical designer, who is also making karala's wedding dress) and so i have just finished dinner and snuck into the office. alex's dutch father Freddie is fit, sun bronzed, and gregarious. He works every night at their pub nearby in the village, anneleise looks after it in the day. she is a very kind, sweet woman. they are both keen gardeners, anneliese does the flower garden and freddie the vegetable garden (he has a glasshouse and a smokehouse for smoking fish). x freda |
Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: GUEST,JennyO Date: 21 Aug 04 - 01:07 PM Thought I'd bring this to the top to say hello freda. Can't access PMs or anything because I have snuck in the back door. Hope you have a great time at the Black Lion tomorrow, everybody. Wish I could be there! Jenny |
Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: jacqui.c Date: 22 Aug 04 - 05:11 AM Well, I picked Freda up from the airport - the plane was late but what's new there! We had a relatively quiet evening talking nineteen to the dozen over a takeaway curry and are now readying ourselves for an assault on Liz the Squeak's for lunch and then the session at the Black Lion. |
Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: jacqui.c Date: 22 Aug 04 - 05:25 AM freda here - austria was beautiful but VERY NEAT - it's good to be somewhere normal again, i'm feeling much more relaxed! jacqui and i have been talking, laughing, mudcatting, and listening to music. its been great! see more of you soon freda |
Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: freda underhill Date: 23 Aug 04 - 01:01 PM its monday late afternoon, i've just had a wondeful meal - cat is a very good cook. yesterday lunch at Liz the S and Paul's place was a treat - an orgy of delicious items - liz has obviously been a professional cook at some time i think. we sat in the garden talking, drinking while items were baking, and as micca said it wasnt the strain you might normally have meeting and getting to know new people - we know each other already. i had a great afternoon, thanks, liz n paul, and thought i would not need to eat for the next week, until i saw the beautiful items cat presented today. the black lion was a hoot - and how good to be with a bunch of folkies singing again. songs were swapped and glasses emptied for several hours - how good to hear new songs, new versions. the mudcatters i met there were all fines singers with a great repertoire - it has whetted my appetite for the rest of the trip. freda |

Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: Scooby Doo Date: 24 Aug 04 - 07:37 AM Sorry Dave its worse than Brewers Droop, you got to lay on your stomach for several hours each night. |

Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: jacqui.c Date: 25 Aug 04 - 06:19 AM I'm just recovering from a great night at the Exmouth Arms. Freda was in very good voice, as was Mr Bryant who treated us to a rendition of 'I Live In Trafalgar Square', with dramatic enactments (I think they could probably hear him in Trafalgar Square as well!). I just wish that it wasn't such a journey for me - didn't get home until 00.45 this morning. |
Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: Dave Bryant Date: 25 Aug 04 - 11:02 AM I got fined a quid in the Sidmouth MBS for "Gross Overacting" ! - thank God that they don't have the same rules at Sharps. |
Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: GUEST,Ex MBS. Date: 25 Aug 04 - 11:30 AM It could have been worse if you sang "The Wild Rover"you would have been fined alot more than a quid. |
Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: Dave Bryant Date: 31 Aug 04 - 04:43 AM Pene has put three photos from the Black Lion session up on member's photos here. I'll send up the ones from the bar at Towersey soon. |
Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: freda underhill Date: 31 Aug 04 - 08:31 AM meanwhile, back at the ranch... hear i am back in austria after a sometimes hectic tour of sessions in london. the black lion, Herga, and Sharps will be great memories for me - i got to hear a lot of great singers, including El greko in person, and have come away with a bunch of excellent cds. more than that, singular momemts include dave bryant singing gladiator, micca moving me to tears of laughter with innumerable parodies, and to other tears on occasion with songs from his trilogy, phot singing some great songs, jacquic's traditional songs, morticia singing anything, including a great song with pixi. dave and essex girl are a great combo, and i got to hear sussex carole and crane driver singing in the mythical barn at towersey. Moses, i look forward to hearing more of your singing, jacqui c, your kindness and optimism are a pleasure to be around, it was great to meet at last. i was cared for with great kindness by micca and khatt, and had the great pleasure of being dive bombed by morgana, the super-gymnastic kitten who can leap from great heights at a single bound. she kept me company on my last night in london, and nestled on me through the night. i left a couple of days ahead of plan, torn away by conflicting loyalties to my daughter and my wallet. the most outstanding thing about uk folkies (and about just about anyone i met in the uk) is their wonderful sense of humour - it has been great to be around a bunch of very whacky people. (I'm back in austria now ... hmmm) i will have some photos to add to dave's, but not til I get back to australia, next week. freda |
Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: Charley Noble Date: 31 Aug 04 - 09:48 AM Freda- The hospitality to wandering Mudcats can be truly magical. Subject: RE: freda going to UK From: Morticia Date: 31 Aug 04 - 01:34 PM It was an absolute joy to meet you Freda....and what a voice this lovely lady has, folks! Not to be missed if you can possibly help it!!! Hope to see you again sometime soon! |

I'm so sorry not to have met up with you, and promise we will meet on my next trip to Oz. I haven't met all the people you've now met on your visit, but I second your vote of enthusiasm for them. I shall be down south next week, and hope that I might renew an acqaintance or two myself. Bon Voyage back to the Coat Hanger City. Giok |
