I've usually ended up meeting Mudcatters, or getting to know them a bit better, because I was going to their part of the world, or we've convened at some music making event. It's been a pretty good way to do it. Sorry I haven't made it to the UK yet, but that's on the short list and I can hardly wait to meet folks and sing for hours with a real beer in my hand.

I do really want to meet Catspaw at some point, and he might even put Ohion on my destination list.

I've also always felt comfortable welcoming Mudcatters here at home, so if you want to see the leaves, eat good food and play or sing, you'll be on my "wanna meet" list.

LOL!

Likewise, I'm sure, dianavan!

;-)

(P.S. I've met, and spent time with several dozen Mudcatters, and I can't really remember having more than one or two political discussions while visiting with them in the 3D world. Mostly we laughted, had fun, and played and/or listened to music... and talked about the Mudcat.)

I hate this and wish I wasn't on anyone's list. I simply love meeting friends from various places. I love the comparison of who they are with who I thought they would be. I am so fascinated with the internet phenomenon of "old friends, as yet unmet". I want each of you to know that when I read your posts, I think about who you are and hope we get to meet. I can't think of a Mudcatter that I wouldn't like to meet. I think the thread is well intentioned, but I don't much care for lists. Too many fascinating folks to meet.

To those that bemoan not being on anyone's list, you are on mine. God willin' and the creek don't rise I will get to meet you.

Mick

Well, I did meet Joybell - at the National this year - you could hardly miss her - she was up on stage wearing her mudcat t shirt. I'd like to meet other ozcats I haven't met yet - John O'Lennaine as you said freda, and Foolestroupe spring to mind.

And I would like to meet some of the UK cats that freda met, such as Micca, catspHiddle, Liz the Squeak, and heaps of others - in fact, any catters I haven't met - even Martin Gibson!

I just read "GUEST Hurt's post of Aug 12, and I have to sympathize. I used to post a lot (as a named guest), but I too was largely ignored. My "nobody wuvs me" feelings even inspired me to write a song and post it to the Mudcat Songbook. Anyway, it's difficult to pick just one Catter I'd like to meet. I would pick several:

Joe Offer, for encouraging me to stick around, despite being farted off most of the time.

Amos, because he complimented me on one of my seasonal contributions

Spaw, because he's funny as hell, and ...

Sorcha, who's posts I always enjoyed reading.

I will be hanging out once in awhile, just reading threads for amusement. Maybe one day, if a Mudcat get-together happens in my neck of the woods, I'll stop by.

Cheers

Is this your song, GUEST, 15 Oct 04 - 10:32 AM? If so, and based on the posting history of the person who contributed it to the song book, I'd say you gave up way too soon. Most of the time, most people don't get a response to their posts. That doesn't mean they (or you) are being ignored. In a forum context like this one, people don't get responded to much more often than they do, but that doesn't mean people aren't reading and enjoying their posts.

Guys, I have a secret to share: NObody gets as much attention as they want around here.

But, some of us get swept up in the energy of communicating and playing at the dance, rather than clinging to the wall paper and introverting about it...an approach which gets you nowhere, I think.

And just for the record, I never got any valentines in grade school either. Wahhhh.

I get occasional feedback on my comments within the threads where I post, and once in a while I get a nice PM from somebody, which has usually been more than enough "recognition" to satisfy me. And, of course, I know that that I appreciate many of the comments I read without reponding to each and every one to tell how much I enjoyed 'em. Who would?

I realize that I have *no* reason to expect any virtual "valentines" -- I don't participate in the chat room, I have no real-life contact with any other members, and I neither give nor receive much in the way of social contact through MC -- for me, it's just a vehicle for exchanging ideas and observations, generally on a fairly abstract level, so I have no business expecting much in the way of *personal* affirmation from my fellow members.

Despite all these valid insights, however, I've felt badly on a couple of occasions at not being mentioned in one of these BS "favorites" threads.

It never bothered me until earlier this year: After a couple months' absense while undergoing radiation treatment for a tumor in my neck, I logged back on after I began to recover, and almost immediately saw a thread entitled "Missing Mudcatters -- Where are they?" Like a fool, I assumed that somebody, somewhere, would have noticed that I hadn't been around for a while and would have said something. No way.

Once I felt that sting of disappointment once, I seem to have become a junky for personal recognition. Whereas I never before had wanted or expected to be mentioned in a discussion like this one, I suddenly felt a compunction to open every stupid discussion of personalities, to scroll through hoping to find some mention of myself, and then (of course) to feel bad -- albeit briefly -- upon coming up empty-handed.

Serves me right for venturing "below the line," and not sticking with those good old meat-and-potatoes music threads!

Getting to "know" someone over the internet is at least rougly determined by how often the person posts on the site. There are probably Catters I would love to meet, but have no real idea who they are because they post so infrequently. I'm sure that there are Guests I'd really enjoy meeting, but without a consistent moniker, it would be like meeting someone with fifty different personalities.

Of course, that doesn't mean that people who post most frequently are necessarily the ones we'd most like to meet. :-)

For what it's worth, when I was in 6th grade (I was eleven years old,) a girl in my class had a birthday party and invited everybody except me and another kid I knew. I felt pretty lousy when all the kids were talking about al lthe fun they had at the party. I had to console myself by telling them that I bet I had a lot more fun playing with my duck.

I think it's the combination of our fragile (or not so fragile) egos wishing to believe that we have affected others enough for them to remember us.

It's fascinating really. I love being only a name, and it was with great trepidation that I went to meet some mudcatters here in London.

I'm glad I did. If the few I met are a good indication of the general MC population, we are a varied and wonderous crowd.

Being "named" isn't what's important, friends, it's BEING.

I'm struck by our parallel paths. Mudcat seems full of people who, like me, never learned the kid-rules at school and have only vague ideas of how some social rules work even now. Shy, introverted, unpopular little kids who none-the-less came to be performers. A real contradiction there unless you look beneath the disguise. A teacher asked me why I was so miserable once, I think I was about 5, and I said I felt sick because I couldn't admit that no one liked me. I think it happened a lot because I remember being taken to a doctor. It was painful. We can still probe the sore spots, can't we?

It's such an important place here. We mean so much to each other. I'm so glad I came.
Jerry, I had a duck too. Never let me down. A true friend. Joy

And then there was my banty rooster Herbert. He liked me better than anyone.

"And Herbert was the terror of the local countryside
Sometimes he'd flag the neighbor's cat, and he'd take him for a ride
And there never was a man or beast who could make him miss a step
You can bet your bottom dollar, he hasn't met one yet."

Now that I've become a grandpa (on 12/3/03), I suppose I *could* claim the title of "Propogator."

I owe you a long-overdue PM (if not more), by the way. Maybe I'll find time over the weekend.

Amos, brucie, et al:

Thanks for answering. Sorry I hadn't checked back into this thread for so many days after posting my little rant.

Ellenpoly:

It's fun being "just a name," isn't it?

When I first got diagnosed with cancer and began going through my treatment, Mudcat was the one "place" in my whole life where I was able to continue being the same person I had always been all along -- albeit a semi-fictional person. It was one of the things that helped me remain sane (well, as sane as ever).

As I said above long ago, there are WAY too many Mudcatters that I want to meet to name just one or 10 or 50. But now that I've been at one Getaway, my dream is that many, many more Mudcatters, who didn't make it this time, will come to the next one.

(In one large HEATED room)In addition to the lovely people who were at Getaway 2004- Picture it+-:

*Jerry Rasmussen and his group
*Brucie
*Frank Hamilton
*Amos Jessup
*Rapaire
*Clinton Hammond
*Jed Marum
*Little Hawk (safer not to bring Blind Drunk in Blind River, though)
*CarolC and Jack the Sailor
*Seamus Kennedy
*Spaw
*Catsphiddle
*Sir jOhn from Hull
*Naemonson and Wakana
*Mark Cohen
*Oh, and Dr. Guitar. I MUST meet him; I have so many problems...

I have to stop- or I'll just have to do a copy and paste on the Mudcat Membership List. I do hope, though, to meet a lot more Catters at Getaway 2005; it was so wonderful meeting so many this year.
