Subject: Lyr Add: GOLD UND SILBER (August Schnezler)
From: Q (Frank Staplin)
Date: 08 Nov 04 - 08:27 PM

August Schnezler is the author's name. A famous old tune, often played in the Hill Country of Texas, settled by Germans led by Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels in 1845. The settlers included scientists and many well-educated colonists. Starting in 1852, a bilingual newspaper was published, sometimes including poems and songs. Its name is perpetuated today as the "Herald Zeitung."

A very good midi here, and all of the words of the poem, which is too long for a song: Gold und Silber
Joe gives only the first verse in German.

Gold und Silber
(August Schnezler)

1. Gold und Silber lieb' ich sehr,
Kann's auch gut gebrauchen,
Hatt' ich doch ein ganges Meer,
Mich hinein zu tauchen;
's braucht nicht grad geprägt zu sein,
Hab's auch so ganz gerne,
(Sei's des Mondes Silberschein,
Sei's das Gold der Sterne.) (2x)

2. Seht, wie blinkt der goldne Wein
Hier in meinem Becher;
Horcht, wie klingt so silberrein
Froher Sang der Zecher!
Dass die Zeit einst golden war,
Will ich nicht bestreiten,
(Denk ich noch im Silberhaar
Gern vergang'ner Zeiten.) (2x)

3. Doch am schönsten ist das Gold
Das vom Lockenköpfchen
Meines Liebchens niederrollt
In zwei langen Zöpfchen!
Darum komm' geliebtes Kind,
Lass uns herzen und küssen,
(Eh' die Locken silber sind
Und wir scheiden müssen) (2x)

4. Liebes Mädchen trag' nicht Leid,
Blicke nicht so trübe,
Weil du nicht die einz'ge Maid,
Die ich erstlich Liebe.
Schau Studenten machen's so,
Lieben mehr als eine,
(Bin ich nicht mehr Studio,
Lieb' ich dich alleime.) (2x)

5. Gräm' dich nicht den ganzen Tag,
Dass wir gerne trinken,
Dass ich dich nicht küssen mag,
Wenn die Becher winken.
Schau', Studenten sind halt so,
Lieben Bier und Weine,
(Bin ich nicht mehr Studio,
Lieb' ich dich alleine.) (2x)

6. Wer nur eine einz'ge küsst,
Bis zur Jahreswende,
Und die anderen Schüchtern grüsst,
Der ist kein Studente!
Wer noch nie bezechet war,
Der hat nie studieret,
(Wär er auch so manches Jahr,
Ins Kolleg marschieret.) (2x)
------------------------

1. Gold und Silber wünsch ich dir
Mögst es niemals missen.
Das Leben auf der Erde hier
Ist sonst ja eh beschissen.
Wenn die Jahre schnell sich drehn,
Glück vergeht und Laster
(Jugendfreuden nicht mehr gehn,
Bleibt Dir bloss der Zaster.) (2x)

and so on, six verses- see ingeb link, above. 'ss' used for ß throughout.

OK, I'm back.

Gold and Silver
(A. Schnetzler, translation by Josef Marais)

Gold and silver often bring people joy and pleasure
But the gold of which I sing isn't worldly treasure.
It's the gold that's in the sky at the sun's first beaming,
And the silver of the moon as it's brightly gleaming:
That's the silver, that's the gold, ever of my dreaming.
Hm, Hm, Hm, Hm.

Then the gold that's best of all: in your hair a-glowing,
Like a shim'ring waterfall down your shoulders flowing.
When it turns to silver grey, my love you'll be knowing.
Through the silver years our love ever will be growing.
That's the silver, that's the gold, in my heart is glowing.
Hm, Hm, Hm, Hm.

Gold un Silber lieb' ich sehr,
Kann's auch gut gebrauchen,
Hätt ich nur ein ganzes Meer
Mich hinein zu tauchen.

'sbraucht grad nicht geprägt zu sein,
Hab's auch so ganz gerne,
Sei's des Mondes Silberschein
Sei's das Gold der Sterne.

Literally (Joe's translation):
I like gold and silver very much,
And I can make good use of it.
I wish I had a whole sea of it
So I could plunge into it.

You need not be impressed (?)
    I would also be happy
If it were the silver shine of the moon
If it were the gold of the stars

Author, August Schnezler (1809-1853) [Marais spells it Schnetzler]

It's in a M&M book called Folk Song Jamboree. I'm on my way out the door, but will post it later today (unless Q beats me to it).

I looked--I don't have that album. http://www.maraisandmiranda.com/ might be a good place to start your search. I don't see this song turning up in the DT. Please post it if you do find the words.

I'm looking for the lyrics to the Marais and Miranda Song entitled "Gold and Silver" from their "Wine of Gaul" album. I believe the words begin: Gold and Silver often bring
             People joy and pleasure,
But the gold of which I sing
             Isn't worldly treasure...

Anyone have all the lyrics to all the verses? Thanks so much!

(By the way, is there any location where I might be able to find lyrics to all the songs from their "Wine of Gaul" album?

Again, many thanks!!
