Alaska Mike - I have thought this myself. It seems to fit in the    general scheme of things.

GregF,

you're probably right. Although his office was high-profile, the whole "Homeland Security" office was underfunded (probably deliberately) by the Bush administration. And although I despise everything this office stands for, I got the impression Ashcroft himself is not a selfish prat mouthing stuff he doesn't believe in (like, say, Rice or Cheney is).

DougR,

I hope you're right about the confirmation process....

Doug (darkriver)

Doug, I hope he meets the same end as his last opponent for the U.S. Senate. I believe if he is nominated, he, hopefully, will not be confirmed. But my ability to predict the nation's political movements have not been all that accurate of late.

Mike

Hmmmm. Excellent idea, Mike! You don't think Ashcroft might have a little difficulty with the confirmation process though do you?

I'm going to throw out a frightening prediction for your consideration. I believe John Ashcroft resigned so that he can later be appointed to the Supreme Court. If this occurs, and he is approved, the neo-cons ability to affect our lives will last for many decades. I hope I'm wrong.

Mike

ASHCROFT NAMED AMBASSADOR TO MARS
Leaves Justice Department After Justice Department Vanishes

by Andy Borowitz

Moments after resigning his post at the Justice Department, Attorney General John Ashcroft was tapped for another big job in the Bush administration, being named the United States' first-ever ambassador to Mars.

"I can think of no one better suited to being ambassador to Mars than John Ashcroft," said President Bush in a brief statement. "He has been preparing for this job for his entire life."

Mr. Ashcroft said that he was motivated in part to resign from the Justice Department because the Justice Department no longer existed.

The Department, which had been gradually disappearing over the past three and a half years, completely vanished over the weekend, Mr. Ashcroft said.

"Once I saw that the Justice Department was, in fact, no longer there, I said to myself, 'Mission accomplished,'" Mr. Ashcroft told reporters.

In Washington, speculation ran rampant that Mr. Ashcroft's lightning-rod status had motivated the White House to shift him to a role where he could do little damage, serving as ambassador to a presumptively unpopulated planet.

But Mr. Ashcroft quickly dispelled all such talk, telling reporters that he had ambitious plans to turn Mars into a penal colony "that will be the envy of the solar system."

One White House aide, on condition of anonymity, had this to say about Mr. Ashcroft's new posting: "At least when John's on Mars we won't be able to hear him sing."

Elsewhere, Teresa Heinz Kerry announced today that she would embark on a three-week tour of the red states, stopping in each state to cuss out random voters.

just as we thought it couldn't get worse..Gonzalez. Face it, Bush has more extreme right-wing candidates than we have breath to filibuster.

Gonzales now takes over

He is the one on the lower right in this Camp David bunker photo (with my additions).
Memos confirm he was insrumental in bypassing the Geneva Convention for Bush.

This will make absolutely no difference to BuShite policy, folks.

Ashcroft alone wasn't calling the shots. He WAS something of a lightning rod, and they'll replace him with a "stealth fascist", things will not change, and the brain dead will fall for it- think its an "improvement".

God Help America.

peedeecee, you beat me to the question.

Now, let's see how long it takes Bush to find someone even worse for the job.

Brucie, If you weren't a Canadian, I would actively support your campaign for Attorney general. Or perhaps Little Hawk. John from Hull could really kick som ass in a job like that also.

Excerpt from that UPI article:

Shortly after the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, that killed some 3,000 people, Ashcroft began a "zero tolerance" campaign against illegal immigrants and those suspected of supporting terror in the United States.

The attorney general said he modeled the campaign on the late Attorney General Robert Kennedy's war against organized crime.

Under that regime, hundreds of immigrants suspected of supporting terrorist organizations abroad, mostly Muslims in the United States, were charged with other offenses and deported to their home countries.

So Ashcroft was just reprising a policy, the most noteworthy result of which was the assassination of that same Attorney General Robert Kennedy at the hands of one of the Muslims the policy pissed off?

I'm sorta glad I didn't bother to memorize John McCutcheon's "Ashcroft's Army".

wow!! I can respond to a political thread and definately agree with the masses!   I am so excited. I think John Ashcroft was not a good person to hold the position he held, and I am delighted to see him go. He surely represented a whole different philosophy than I am comfortable with. The Deputy would make a much better choice/

The resignation of John Ashcroft is definitely good news for this country! Let us all hope that his successor will , for a change, protect our constitutional and civil rights.
