Hi Skarpi.
Cars- from Dan Dooley hire was about £70.00 (all in with insurance etc) unlimited milage-we went down to Dublin to see Planxty. The year before we used AVIS cost a litle bit more about £75.00 Friday evening pickup 21.00 to Sunday 18.00 drop off at the airport. The road is quite simple from the airport to Belfast. A little bit complicated in Belfast it's self and then just bendy and dark but great fun from Newtownards down to Portaferry.

If there is no hostel then you'll not experience the great Ulster Fryup-

Thorri-not hard to guess where it evolved from is it like an upellyiah-spelling poor! (Feast and fires!)?

Hang down your head, Dan Dooley! This year's car was only €50 ($7,500) for two days hire, but it's probably powered like the Anthill Mob. Make sure you book in Icelandic Euros, cos they're cheaper than British Pounds.

Iceland is even further behind than the UK concerning the Euro - they have not even joined the EU ...

Eric, if you arrive too late for the buses, there are not many options left - taxi or car hire or walking (hitch-hiking?) ...
What time does your flight arrive?

Eric, can you change your flight to go to Dublin (or Cork of course)? I could easily pick you up there.

Don't fret, we WILL get you to Portaferry somehow. If nobody can give you a lift from Belfast, I'll get over there, and pick you up myself in the Fiat.

It is a big detour though (as I'm coming in from the south, obviously), so if anyone else is passing Belfast: speak up please!

Letty

Eric, it might also help if you tell not only the time of your arrival, but also which airport (Belfast Harbour or Belfast International).

Or tell the pilot that you will start playing your guitar if he doesn't land at Portaferry - he will surely give in to save the lives of all the other passangers ;-)

Letty.

I haven't booked flights yet, but I can get to Dublin for about 20.50 on the Friday night by Ryan air.(I know the route to Belfast-did it last year from the Planxty gig) Would this be any good to you. I'd love to make the round trip. Dublin to Portaferry and then Belfast (because Greg will take me to the airport on Sunday)
Everybody, thankyou for your kindness it really is appreciated, I'll wait for Letty's reply. If it's a hassle Letty, please don't go out of your way or cause yourself a problem on my account.

I think I need to book the tickets very soon, whichever way I come and go.

20:50 at Dublin Airport?
The last ferry from Strangford to Portaferry leaves at 22:30 - roughly 120km - risky ...
Might be better to take the long way round (or to see at what time you are in Newry)

Post - Top - Home - Printer Friendly - Translate

Subject: RE: Loughstock lll

Let's see - Dublin Airport to Strangford is 160km, roughly 2 1/2 hours on Irish roads and assuming there's no traffic jam in Newry.
That means the ferry probably isn't an option. The long route 'round takes more than 3 hours from Dublin, so then it doesn't matter whether you land in Belfast or in Dublin :)
Is 20:50 the earliest possible time?

I'm afraid it is Letty. Plane from Leeds arrives around20.00 at Belfast. I shall have OFSTED inspection at school all week, Fridy included. Getting away on time will be very difficult. Even then if I do, I have to get to Leeds in time to catch the plane.I'm hoping for Mrs V to be chauffer that night.

http://www.translink.co.uk/present/ULB_9A10_O.asp shows the last bus from Belfast to Portaferry as leaving Belfast at 22:00 arriving in Portaferry at 23:22 - 2 hours should be enough to get out of the plane, get your stuff and move from airport to Belfast Laganside bus centre

Some info for Skarpi and Eric.

1 Skarpi

If you finish up having to use public transport, it's not too difficult. First get bus from airport to Belfast. Departures are 0710, 0740, then every 30 min, all day. Be sure to get off at Laganside, which is the first of the two Belfast bus stations that the bus stops at. From Laganside there are buses direct to Portaferry at 1055, 1215 and 1315. They all take about 1hr 30min.

But remind me what your arrival and departure times are. I think your arrival time will fit in with me, and if the departure time does as well, it might be worth me hiring a car for all of us. Also remind me what intruments you are bringing, so I know what size of car would be needed.

2 Eric

Apart from BMI, most operators from Leeds airport fly to Belfast City. From city airport there are regular links to the city centre, which is only a couple of miles away. Ask at airport info which will be going first, making sure they check the airport bus service, the public bus service (No 21) and trains from Sydenham. (Sydenham is 2min from terminal by courtesy shuttle service). Also of course you would be much more easily collectable from City airport, which is only about 15 minutes from Newtownards. Maybe less, if you were driving.

If going under your own steam, you need to be on either the 2025 or 2200 bus from Newtownards to Portaferry. They go down opposite sides of the lough, but it's about an hour either way. There is a 1950 bus from Belfast (Laganside) to Newtownards that links reasonably well with the first, and another at 2200 which I think is the later bus. But depending on the timings, you may consider taxi direct from airport to Newtonwards bus station, for which allow say 20 minutes. (Get a N'ards firm to guote, which will be cheaper than getting in an airport taxi - maybe £10-12.)

All in all, given your late arrival, it may be best to to hope Fibs can wangle herself some insurance!

Eric- it's definitely International Aiport and not City Airport? If there's any way you can get from International Airport to the bus station in Belfast then I will do my damndest to get you down the peninsula. If it's City Airport I can probably get you straight from there, no problem at all.

Hi Skarpi

I just wrote you the longest PM I've ever written! But I pressed the wrong button and lost the whole lot. I hope I can remember everything....

If you like, I can hire a car and transport you everywhere you need to go in Northern Ireland, including meeting you at the airport on Thursday night and getting you back there on Monday morning. Also trips to wherever your friend lives. (I know my way round Belfast pretty well.) The total cost to you guys would be £25 each, which would go towards cost of car hire. This is less than you would pay in bus fares during your stay, and would save you a lot of hassle.

Also I am fairly sure I can borrow a friend's house, just a few miles from the airport, where we could all stay on Thursday night if you like. I could then take you to meet your friend in Belfast on Friday morning, and pick you up again when you want to set off for Portaferry. If you did not mind waiting until 1500 before leaving for Portaferry, that would be perfect, as my daughter would be out of school and we might be able to squeeze her into the car on the same trip.

On Sunday night, you could stay at the self-catering house I have booked. Five of us are staying there on Friday and Saturday, but on Sunday night it is only MudGuard and me, so far. The cost to you would be £9 each. OR, it might be better to stay at my friend's house again, as that is much nearer to the airport. We could decide about Sunday night later, when I know for sure whether we can borrow the house. The cost for using the house, if available, would be a bottle of some suitable Icelandic concoction for the house owner (is there something called Brinnivin?)

By the way, the best music day at Portaferry will be Saturday. Most people are leaving on Sunday, and you might like to go to a session in Belfast that day (it starts about 1600). That might suit your Belfast friend, and maybe Skipjack8 (Greg) and MudGuard would like that, as they are staying in Northern Ireland till Monday (Greg will also have a hire car).

Let me know what you think, and also let me know if you have any questions.

Best wishes ~ Peter Kirker [also known as "Peter K (Fionn)"]
