Subject: RE: BS: Land Of The Free From: dianavan Date: 18 Dec 04 - 12:09 PM Yes, it does depend on how the question was worded. Do they also agree that civil liberties should be restricted for all Americans? Seems to me that civil liberties, in general, are not valued by many Americans or they wouldn't be putting up with the invasion of privacy that is prevalent today. |

Subject: RE: BS: Land Of The Free From: Ebbie Date: 18 Dec 04 - 12:25 PM It's being covered all over the place. "Forty-eight percent of Americans said the group's rights shouldn't be restricted. The survey, which was commissioned by the Media and Society Research Group at Cornell's Department of Communication, is based on 715 telephone interviews. It has a margin of error of 3.6 percent, Cornell said in a statement on its Web site." From a Different Site |

By Bennington's fields in the steel light of dawn crouched by a stone wall, where I knew they'd come on Musket primed for a foe from far over the wave in the land of the free and the home of the brave In this fledgling nation, just learning to fly we rallied to Shays vowing live free or die George Washington's killers chased thousands like me our crime being brave, our intent to be free In tobacco fields my mother's labor pains brought me to the life of the lash and slave chains I fled north to Canada from slavery to the home of brave and the land of the free See Crazy Horse riding now over the plain To greasy grass battle, a victory to gain From Yellow Hair's murders his people to save the Lakota live free in the home of the brave In a dark prison cell, I barely can see Hans Yoder who lies bruised and tortured like me We Quakers and Amish no Great War will fight We bravely sought freedom from tyranny's might With great grandfather's musket I offered the fight to a coward in a jet plane who struck in the night My forefathers in these mountains like me made Afghanistan home to the brave and the free So now in these days when the banners all wave ask yourself what is freedom and where are the brave have courage to stand with the brave and the free when your nation strays from the path of liberty |

Subject: RE: BS: Land Of The Free From: Bill D Date: 18 Dec 04 - 02:25 PM funny problem, ain't it...if you profile and persecute people based on religious and racial/cultural grounds, you end up making life miserable for thousands of perfectly honest, nice folks...but if you are fair, reasonable people and give everyone the benefit of the doubt, you allow the few bad ones to easily bide their time and do damage at their leisure. The REAL problem, my friends, is buried so deep in human nature and superstition and fear that we are not likely to ever solve it. What, me? cynical?...nawwwwwwww... |

Subject: RE: BS: Land Of The Free From: Little Hawk Date: 18 Dec 04 - 06:29 PM Just because people will fight for what they see as their own civil liberties does not mean they will stand up for somebody else's civil liberties if that someone else happens to be black, Muslim, leftist, Injun, long-haired, gay, etc... "Not on your nelly!" as Frank Burns used to say. Nope. "Civil liberties is only fer them whut thinks jest like I do! Meanin'...the RIGHT way!" |
