Subject: BS: MG --Epidemiology and Prevalence From: Amos Date: 11 Jan 05 - 10:16 AM MG is the most common primary disorder of neuromuscular transmission. The usual cause is an acquired immunological abnormality, but some cases result from genetic abnormalities at the neuromuscular junction. Much has been learned about the pathophysiology and immunopathology of MG during the past 20 years. What was once a relatively obscure condition of interest primarily to neurologists is now the best characterized and understood autoimmune disease. A wide range of potentially effective treatments are available, many of which have implications for the treatment of other autoimmune disorders. EPIDEMIOLOGY The prevalence of MG in the United States is estimated at 14/100,000 population, approximately 36,000 cases in the United States. However, MG is probably under diagnosed and the prevalence is probably higher. Previous studies showed that women are more often affected than men. The most common age at onset is the second and third decades in women and the seventh and eighth decades in men. As the population ages, the average age at onset has increased correspondingly, and now males are more often affected than females, and the onset of symptoms is usually after age 50. |

Subject: RE: BS: MG --Epidemiology and Prevalence From: Bill D Date: 11 Jan 05 - 10:33 AM I got a mind like flypaper....stuff sticks to it pretty good, but randomly. I looked at that for 5-6 seconds, and some little switch said "Myasthenia Gravis" ...I have NO idea where I picked that up, nor why I made the connection. |

Subject: RE: BS: MG --Epidemiology and Prevalence From: Amos Date: 11 Jan 05 - 10:50 AM That Bill D, ya can't stick nothin' past him!! Ah'll confess all those MG threads brought hit to mah mahnd, like, so I thunk this up. Guilty, guilty, guilty. A |

Subject: RE: BS: MG --Epidemiology and Prevalence From: catspaw49 Date: 11 Jan 05 - 11:48 AM MG....a once popular though typically unreliable British sports car. MG stood for Morris' Garage and they were from the same family that brought you a line of "interesting" sedans as well. The MG encapsulated all that was fine and grand as well as all that was hideously demented in the British roadster. With an electrical system by Joseph Lucas the leader of a Satanic cult, one was assured of complete failures every few months and some partial failure of some kind or another every day. The Smith instrumentation was attractive but of no value whatsoever in determing what the hell was the matter with the piece of shit. Smith instruments were not pushy, preferring to make suggestions on things like oil pressure and RPM instead of anything even close to reality. The convertible tops were pure Machiavellli and often leaked so badly that you couldn't tell if it was up or down. Like most of it's brethren, the MG's were great fun and well suited for going from Point A to Point B...............provided of course that you had the time and money to repair it at Point B for it's return to A or bravely continuing on to C. Subject: RE: BS: MG --Epidemiology and Prevalence From: JohnInKansas Date: 11 Jan 05 - 01:04 PM Spaw - I'm not sure the legend that Lucas was leader of a satanic cult is supportable, although he was known, by those who worked for him, as "The Prince of Darkness" because of the common and frequent failures of Lucas electrical components. We've been told for decades that the principal reason Brits like warm beer is because Lucas also made their refrigerators. John |

Subject: RE: BS: MG --Epidemiology and Prevalence From: Pauline L Date: 16 Jan 05 - 02:06 AM Yes, I agree with Sir jOhn's question. Amos, what was your point in writing the post that started this thread? It appears to have come out of nowhere. |

Subject: RE: BS: MG --Epidemiology and Prevalence From: Amos Date: 16 Jan 05 - 12:47 PM Well, folks, there was a context which gave it relevance, which is not embedded in the htread itself; so if you weren't involved witht he context, it would seem off-the-wall, much like many hilarious posts from Hull which leave the uninitiated totally non-plussed and mystified. Sorry for the confusion. No, I'm not going any further into it. I am trying to break the habit. A |
