Subject: BS: and I thought cheese and pickle was bad From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 13 Jan 05 - 01:13 PM The DH (dear husband) and I are considering a second trip to Iceland. Doing some reading on the Internet, I came across a description of this package: "When Vikings sat down for their annual midwinter feast, it wasn't exactly tea and crumpets time. Vikings celebrated February - the fourth month of winter - with plenty of dancing and singing and hearty Viking-sized meals of Slatur - sheep's blood pudding rolled in lard and sewn up in the stomach. They consumed half-boiled lamb's heads called Svid, seal flippers, rotten shark, and scarfed pickled ram's testicles. While these delicacies are not part of the normal everyday diet of Icelanders, visitors and locals alike can eat like a Viking during special events in February in restaurants, homes, and community centers throughout Iceland. Come to think of it, pack some Pepto-Bismol as well." I'm passing this on for anyone who's interested. Me and the DH, well, we're going on summer, and we're going to eat the wonderful food from the grocery store. The butter (smurre) is particularly good. |

Subject: RE: BS: and I thought cheese and pickle was bad From: robomatic Date: 13 Jan 05 - 01:16 PM I can eat anything if I put enough tabasco on it. A European friend of mine described a meal he loved, animal blood clotted in milk, I can't remember if it was cooked or not, but I think it was pig blood. |

Subject: RE: BS: and I thought cheese and pickle was bad From: Liz the Squeak Date: 13 Jan 05 - 01:29 PM Corned beef and mixed fruit jam sandwiches... yummmy! If you're going to Iceland, give Skarpi a PM, he could probably tell you the best places to get pickled rams' testicles. Me, I'll stick with the corned beef and jam. LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: and I thought cheese and pickle was bad From: GUEST,MMario Date: 13 Jan 05 - 01:38 PM most cultures have some sort of blood pudding - though they may call it "black sausage" or some other name. seal flipper is basically meat; the "rotten" shark could be more accurately called "preserved"; testicles of various species are likewise common food in many cultures. The Svid is indeed a seared and boiled sheepshead - but again - this was a common dish in many cultures. |

Subject: RE: BS: and I thought cheese and pickle was bad From: Rapparee Date: 13 Jan 05 - 01:43 PM You want testicles? Ever have calf fries, also call Rocky Mountain Oysters, also called Prairie Oysters? They're supposed to be best when they're cooked fresh from the cuttin'. Muktuk is a dish of Arctic peoples -- seal or whale blubber still attached to the skin. Lutefisk and gefilte fish? Cod treated with lye? Or shashimi -- raw fish. Or sushi. Or.... |

Subject: RE: BS: and I thought cheese and pickle was bad From: TheBigPinkLad Date: 13 Jan 05 - 01:45 PM One night when I got home pissed and my mother's pantry was almost bare, I invented the banana-and-pickled-onion sandwich. I woke with a vague memory of it having tasted good and so I made another. Drunk or sober, they're not just good, they're great. |

Subject: RE: BS: and I thought cheese and pickle was bad From: GUEST,MMario Date: 13 Jan 05 - 02:09 PM a lot of it is in the description - a professor of mine in college once passed out a questinairre asking if anyone would be willing to attempt eating: heat coagulated paste of grass seed, sometimes mixed with various reproductive cells, and bodily fluids, plus the dehydrated sap of various crushed plants - prior to the application of heat, first mixed into an elastic solid and then fermented until a buildup of gases caused the solid to become a mass riddled with small gas pockets - often sliced and further treated with heat until protein and other chemical breakdown caused a colour change to the surface |

Subject: RE: BS: and I thought cheese and pickle was bad From: frogprince Date: 13 Jan 05 - 05:45 PM So this guy goes into a local cafe, where he knows they often have a special for regulars that isn't on the menu. "Rosie",He asks the waitress, "anything different in the kitchen today?". "We got some beef tongue that makes a good sandwich", she replies. He thinks a moment. "Nah", he says, "I don't want to eat anthing that came out of a cow's mouth...I'll just take a couple of eggs over easy." |

The only thing not eaten here is the 'bah', 'squeal', 'mooh', 'quack, 'gobble'(soory not very good at doing goose impressions), 'cluck', 'woof', 'miaow' Fermented (read off) food is very common in China, fermented tofu (dofu in Chinese ) smells like horse pee but it is quite tasty! |
