Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Holy City (Jerusalem) From: Jim McLean Date: 21 Jul 19 - 08:07 AM This is the version... from memory .... that Nigel Denver sang: Last night I wore a full dress suit and went to a full dress ball, The trousers they were far too long, the jacket far too small, And so I took some scissors and cut two lengths away And as I danced around the hall, I heard the people say And as I danced around the hall, I heard the people say... You're losing them, you're losing them, Pick up your trousers high, Whose are they, whose are they? My God what a terrible size. Whose are they, whose are they? My God what a terrible size. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Holy City (Jerusalem) From: GUEST Date: 18 Dec 14 - 04:11 AM Another version... Last night I borrowed a dress suit To go to the county ball, The jacket was too large for me, The trousers were too small, And as I walked across the room, I heard the people sing... Chorus: You're losing them, you're losing them! PUll up your trousers, do! Whose are they? Whose are they? Those trews don't belong to you, Whose are they? Whose are they? They don't belong to you! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Holy City (Jerusalem) From: GUEST Date: 21 Apr 13 - 09:11 AM QADZBORK: On re-reading, I reckon 6 is too much! Probably 2... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Holy City (Jerusalem) From: MGM·Lion Date: 21 Apr 13 - 04:44 AM On second recollection, IIRC the waistcoat was much too 'large', rather than 'tight', which contrasts better with the coat or jacket being too small. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Holy City (Jerusalem) From: MGM·Lion Date: 20 Apr 13 - 10:48 AM Tommy Handley, the most popular [probably] comedian of the Second World War years, mentioned in his autobiography having been thrown out by the ear from a school-children's concert for having sung the "You're losing 'em" variant. As I recall it after these many years, his version went "One day I bought a new dress suit to go to a fancy ball, The waistcoat it was much too tight, the coat it was too small. And as for the pants, they would not fit So I tied them up with string And as I waltzed around the floor I could hear all the people sing -- Yer losin' 'em, yer losin' 'em' Hold up your trousers tight. Whose are they? Whose are they? Oh it was a terrible sight!" He further mentioned that, when he later in life met the teacher who had ejected him, she confessed that she had only done so because, if he had gone on for a moment longer, she would have lost face among her colleagues and the pupils by collapsing into helpless mirth. ~M~ |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Holy City (Jerusalem) From: GUEST Date: 20 Apr 13 - 08:22 AM Guest: qadzbork These are the words I have dragged up fom memory of the 1950/60 era: Last night I hired a full dress suit to go to a full dress ball. The trousers the were far too long the jacket was far too small In order to make the trousers fit I cut six yards(!) away and as I danced around the floor I heard the people say: (What did they say?) Chorus: You're losing them, you're losing them lift up your trousers high Whose are they, whose are they? My G** you;re a H*** of a mess! Repeat chorus |

Subject: The Holy City (Jerusalem) - Maybrick / Weatherly From: Genie Date: 07 Apr 09 - 12:14 AM Glad to find the lyrics to this song, as well as the YouTube links, here. I used to know this song by heart but I haven't sung it in years, maybe decades, and my memory needed refreshing. I was also intrigued to find that the same Englishman, Fred Weatherly, who wrote the lyrics to Danny Boy, also wrote these lyrics. I also did not know he did Roses Of Piccardy. I'm thinking of doing this as an offertory this coming Easter (next Sunday). Not sure how well it will work with just guitar accompaniment, but we'll see. Genie |

Subject: The Holy City (Jerusalem) From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 28 Dec 07 - 11:49 PM "The Holy City" was posted by Alison in Dec. 1998, thread 7870, also an abc: Holy City In that thread, Masato posted a story, "Holy City," from the African Methodist Episcopal Church Review, 1911, that is well worth reading in connection with this hymn. Words and midi at Cyberhymnal: Holy City Note the different verse pattern. Both Weatherby and Maybrick were English. Weatherby is equally noted for "Danny Boy" and "Roses of Picardy." |

Subject: Lyr Add: THE HOLY CITY (Weatherly, Maybrick) From: Azizi Date: 28 Dec 07 - 07:56 PM Imo, not really off-topic: This song is probably posted on Mudcat, but just in case it's not, here's the lyrics and a midi for "The Holy City": http://www.my.homewithgod.com/heavenlymidis2/holycity.html The Holy City Music by Michael Maybrick Original lyrics by Frederick E. Weatherly - 1892 Revelation 21:2 "And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband." Last night I lay a-sleeping, there came a dream so fair, I stood in old Jerusalem beside the temple there. I heard the children singing and ever as they sang, Me thought the voice of angels from heaven in answer rang. Me thought the voice of angels from heaven in answer rang. Refrain Jerusalem! Jerusalem! Lift up your gates and sing, Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna to your King! And then me thought my dream was changed, the streets no longer rang, Hushed were the glad Hosannas the little children sang. The sun grew dark with mystery, the morn was cold and chill, As the shadow of a cross arose upon a lonely hill. As the shadow of a cross arose upon a lonely hill. Refrain Jerusalem! Jerusalem! Lift up your gates and sing, Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna to your King! And once again the scene was changed; new earth there seemed to be; I saw the Holy City beside the tideless sea; The light of God was on its streets, the gates were open wide, And all who would might enter and no one was denied. No need of moon or stars by night, or sun to shine by day; It was the new Jerusalem that would not pass away. It was the new Jerusalem that would not pass away. Refrain Jerusalem! Jerusalem! Lift up your gates and sing, Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna to your King! Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna to your King! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Holy City (Jerusalem) From: GUEST,barrie.roberts2@btopenworld.com Date: 11 Jun 04 - 12:31 AM I know the parody of 'Jerusalem' as: Last night I borrowed a fulldress suit To go to a fulldress ball, The jacket was too short for me, The trousers were too tall, I cut six inches off the end And went to the fulldress ba-a-all. Chorus: You're losing 'em, you're losing 'em! They're hanging on the floor, Who's are they? Who's are they? We're sure that they are not yours, Who's are they? Who's are they? We're sure that they are not yours! Enjoy! Barrie Roberts |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Holy City (Jerusalem) From: Marje Date: 10 Jun 04 - 04:47 PM I've heard it and enjoyed it but can't, alas, remember much more than has already been already quoted. I think it began something like: "I hired myself a fancy suit to wear to a fancy ball, the trousers were too big for me, the jacket was too small..." And so on. But I don't know who sang it or where I heard it, and look forward, as you do, to finding out more. Marje |

Subject: RE: The Holy City (Jerusalem) From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 13 May 04 - 04:53 PM Stephen Adams, who wrote the music, was the stage name of Michael Maybrick, born in Liverpool, 1844, d. 1913. Apparently he had a great voice. With Frederick Weatherly, he wrote many songs, including "Nancy Lee"- "Of all the wives as e'er you know, Yo Ho! lads! ho! Yo Ho! Yo Ho! There's none like Nancy Lee...." See Cyberhymnal for words, midi, biographies: Holy City |

Subject: RE: The Holy City (Jerusalem) From: John in Brisbane Date: 03 Dec 98 - 07:55 PM Alison, I have transferred responsibility to Joe in this regard, but would suggest no impediment to experienced hands like yourself, except that the admission bar may be raised somewhat. In any event I believe that we should encourage as many contributors as possible.
Maybe someone else could sponsor a reward to non-virgin contributors.

Subject: RE: The Holy City (Jerusalem) From: John in Brisbane Date: 03 Dec 98 - 06:24 PM Compliments of the Season, I very rarely disagree with you Joe, and this is yet another example. Enough said.
About 15 years ago Decca released two separate vinyls of The World's Greatest Voices, the original plus Vol 2. It includes this song plus a couple of dozen classics from the early part of this century with performances by Tauber, Peter Dawson, Moncrieff and many others - certainly no syrupy cover versions. I believe that it MAY have been issued on CD, but unlike a number of more recent Australian releases by the ABC it has not been digitally titivated. The version by Peter Dawson (?) is magnificent.
I do recommend this to anyone who can locate it. In fact I will send a taped copy of this to any one Mudcatter who posts a new tune to this forum by the end of Sunday 20 December. Joe Offer to work out the rules and adjudicate. (Thanks in advance Joe if you care to re-post this please).

Subject: RE: The Holy City (Jerusalem) From: Joe Offer Date: 03 Dec 98 - 12:50 AM I'm still trying to find out if Paul Robeson ever recorded this song. I can hear him singing it in my mind, but I haven't been able to find a recording. If he didn't, he should have recorded it. I have a recording of him singing another "Jerusalem," but not "Holy City." By the way, Michael Crawford recorded "Holy City" on his recent "On Eagle's Wings" CD. It's awful. Don't buy it. "Holy City" and "Eagle's Wings" are two of my favorite religious songs, but Crawford's recording is so syrupy that I hate it. -Joe Offer- |
