Subject: Lyr Add: TWO HOBOES (from Judy Roderick) From: Jim Dixon Date: 27 Jun 14 - 11:36 PM Spotify has TWO HOBOES recorded by the Journeymen on the album "Capitol Collectors Series." I listened, and the lyrics sound exactly like those that Peace posted back on 25 Feb 2005. It also has this version: TWO HOBOES Lawrence Gellert / Dick Weissman As sung by Judy Roderick on "Woman Blue" (1965, reissued 2006) Railroad looks so pretty Boxcars on the track Yonder stands two hoboes Their rucksack on their back And it's oh, babe, no home, babe When you ride the railroad It's hard to heed [or "keep"?] the law Rode all the way from New Orleans Trouble's all they saw And it's oh, babe, no home, babe Worked on a Georgia road crew Ninety days in the county jail Broke away 'bout the break o' day Trouble bound to find their trail And it's oh, babe, no home, babe Clothes all torn and ragged No one knows their name Must have traveled through a thousand towns When you're broke, they all look the same And it's oh, babe, no home, babe Oh, babe, no home, babe |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Two Hobos (Dave Weissman) From: GUEST Date: 16 Jun 14 - 11:46 AM This song was recorded by the Limeliters, a folk group from the 70's. The lyrics above are those used by them and the last line is the last line, not a lead for the first verse. It is quite upbeat and well worth a play. pjkrieger1231@gmail.com |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Two Hobos (Dave Weissman) From: GUEST,Lori Helms Date: 22 May 12 - 03:33 PM The Journeymen recorded this song back in the 60s, and that's the version I am familiar with. I see a few things that need to be corrected in the lyrics you have above. In the second line it should be "moonlight" not "moonlights". And that recurring line at the end of each stanza should be "'ole Babe", not "oh babe". In the last stanza add the word "Goin'" before the line "back to Arksansas". The very last line is the first line repeated with the word "pretty" kind of trailing off into a long note. So don't repeat the whole stanza, just kind of let the word "pretty" fade out. This is my favorite Journeymen song. I will try to get the chords for you. You can get the song on the CD "Very Best of the Journeymen". Here is a link to one place where it can be ordered: http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=1009176&style=music Here is my email address if you have any questions: helmswondermom@aol.com |

Subject: RE: lyrcs rqd: Two Hobos by Dave Weissman From: Peace Date: 25 Feb 05 - 04:15 PM PS Thank you Brian. It was the Dave Weissman name that got me somewhere. |
Subject: RE: lyrcs rqd: Two Hobos by Dave Weissman From: Peace Date: 25 Feb 05 - 11:11 AM I am guessing that the last lone line means maybe to repeat the first stanza. I have never heard the song. Hope this does it for you. BM |
Subject: Lyr Add: TWO HOBOES (Weissman/Gellert) From: Peace Date: 25 Feb 05 - 11:09 AM All I could find. It was from a site where someone asked for the lyrics and someone else posted the following. Two Hoboes (Weissman/Gellert) Railroad looks so pretty Moonlights on the track Yonder come two hoboes With a rucksack on their back Well it's oh babe, no home babe Work on the Georgia road gang 90 days in the county jail Run away from that ball and chain With the houndogs on their trail Well it's oh babe, no home babe Clothes all torn to pieces Nobody knows their name Yes, they've travelled through a thousand towns And they all look just the same Well it's oh babe, no home babe When you're broke and hungry It's hard to keep the law Rode all the way from New Orleans Back to Arkansas Well it's oh babe, no home babe Railroad looks so pretty |
Subject: RE: lyrcs rqd: Two Hobos by Dave Weissman From: Brian Hoskin Date: 25 Feb 05 - 06:59 AM No luck with actually locating the lyrics, but the search I did suggests that it's 'Two Hoboes' written by Dick Weissman and Lawrence Gellert, recorded by Judy Roderick on Woman Blue (Vanguard), published by Ludlow Music. Although the song is credited to Weissman / Gellert (BMI) the song was actually collected by Lawrence Gellert, but the lyrics aren't included in his (1936) Negro Songs of Protest. However, I see on Stefan Wirz's website that a recording of the song has been issued, see here. Hope this helps your search Brian Hoskin |
