Ted have you seen a nuclear powered Jag? That's all they drive you know. Fussy little buggers. But on their money who can blame them.

hmmmm..... interesting. BUT, a gang of seagulls could drive a car no problem. Three of them on the pedals, two to steer, and one to sqawk instrutions to them from the dashboard. There, simple eh?

Subject: RE: BS: are libarys rubbish?

I expect seagulls would be crap drivers, because they don't have hands, and even overcoming that difficulty, they certainly wouldn't be able to operate the pedals and see out at the same time. And I'm not sure they have enough power to push a clutch at all, so unless they were in an automatic they wouldn't even be able to start.

It's not the spelling, it's the inanity - the constant "Is xxx rubbish?" sort of thread that's posted more as a form of cyber-Tourette's than in a genuine search for an answer. If I really believed that John was interested in and could learn from the responses I might have a different opinion, but all I see is rather sad attention seeking of the 'Look at me, I'm zany, I am,' sort of fashion.
Such people - the sort of people who ask a question and don't give a toss about the reply, or who don't engage their brains before posting apparently random verbiage do rattle my cage.
It's not that his opinions are different from mine, it's just that they're not even fully-fledged opinions; they're the equivalent of someone in a pub lurching up and shouting through a haze of crisp fragments: "Seagulls! They're crap drivers, aren't they?" Once may be funny, but too often and it's maybe time to change pubs or have a quiet word with the landlord.
Perhaps it's a north-south thing. Perhaps it's just that I'm an intolerant stupid moany person. But if someone can point out to me the gnomic wit and subtle humour that I've clearly missed in the original post, I'll gladly stand them a pint of whatever it is John drinks.
Anyhap - it's probably better than I don't go near these sort of threads in future.

I think the basic idea of the thread was to entertain.

As Eeyore says, ballons, parties, here we are! and there we are!

If you are a librarian, or a quantity surveyor who was just passing byand got sucked in. If you were dragged away from the serious concerns of the day: deciding who was nicest Saddam Hussein or the IRA.......call it a sabbatical.

Perhaps you can make the time up if you get up earlier and start taking cold showers.

The deadly serious nature of this thread is hinted at in the title - one would have thought.....

Interesting that some humor seems to have trouble being communicated through written media. I don't have much experience with jOhn (he disapeared about when I showed up, hmmm....) but I haven't noticed any reason from anything I've seen him post and things I've seen people say about him to take anything he says seriously. It occurs to me there's a lot of stuff that gets posted in BS that I would find offensive if I thought people were being serious. But since I don't it's all funny. I think I'm probably happier this way, and if I suddenly find out these people are being serious I'll be very disapointed.

Gervase, I've been wondering about John, too. He sure puts out a lot of BS. In general, I avoid any thread he has started. This time, I got sucked in because I am a librarian. If his threads have anything to recommend them, I guess I'm just too dense to see it.

Hmmm, Gervase- you decide that jOhn is the village idiot because..?

Perhaps it's that his posts are not in perfect English, correctly phrased and spelled?

Or because his opinions differ from your own?

Neither are good reasons to think of someone as an idiot.

He has certainly rattled your cage, perhaps it might be useful to consider why?

you read all thread, and post to it loasds of times, then say "johns threads are rubbish"

this is make you looking like a stupid person!
i explain=

perhaps you will allow me to draw an analogy?

a man goes to restaraunt, eats meal, waiter goes up to him a few times, asks is everything ok?
man says "yes, its great, really nice etc"
man finishes all meal, licks plate clean,
but then moans, = "that meal was rubbish, i'm not paying"!

If you don't like my threads, don;t read them.
dont read them, post to them a few times, then moan about them!

Nope. Google (and the rest of the search engines) make NO distiction between true and false, and for that matter whether or not the web pages that they have stored and indexed ("cached") still even exist.

And did you know that it's library school graduates (i.e., librarians) who developed the indexes and do the indexing? True.

Gee, it plays back through Winamp for me.

It ain't a library's grievances, it's a library employee's grievances. Ugly stuff, like religious and age discrimination and whistle-blowing retaliation is being charged.

I'm glad it's not my library. Then again, I wouldn't even consider such stuff.

I dunno what's wrong, Amos. Are your speakers on? Try going to www.kpvi.com and clicking on "News." The story is "Library grievances."

As for offending everyone...darn, I thought that was my job. Maybe that's why nobody comes to visit me. But then, this IS Idaho, and bathing is optional (if not actively discouraged).

Rapaire I think there is a slight misunderstanding. A library, by rights, should contain enough material to be able to ffend almost anyone, true, because it represents such a wide spectrum of points of view.

That does not mean your job is to offend as many people as possible!! Just that you should be equipped to do so!! Viva la difference!

As Greg Stevens writes about his library, so it seems to be happening here too. More CDs, DVDs, Videos, computer games (Even with computers to play them on), lots of desks for non-ratepayers to do their homework on and to hold noisy social groups around, toddlers running about screeching.....
less and less books, less peace, no archives, only books that are recognised as 'classics' are replaced with new copies-everything else, regardless of popularity, gone forever.

I know change is a constant, but in this case I don't like it.
Rubbish? Not yet, but working toward it.

What is it about John in Hull? He starts a thread with some in incoherent rambling, we all jump on the bandwagon and say how much we like libraries, and he buggers off, presumaby to start another inane thread somewhere else.
Oi, John! Did you actually mean that stuff in the first post, or are you just being an arse? Let's have your thoughts.

Dang, just look at all the science-fiction fans around here. :)

I forgot to mention that my science-fiction club meets at the county library once a month, and we are sponsoring an all-day SF seminar in April. Without the library, it would be much harder to have a meeting place. Yay, libraries. :)

My EX - husband use to like telling everyone:

"I read a book once. Didn't like it. Never did it again".

Note: EX - husband.

I just found the local library here in San Diego and I'm like a kid in a candy shop! I just did almost all of Harlan Ellison. Now I'm reading a biography of Kate Hepburn, Ben Franklin and another James Paterson mystery, When the wind blows. I have lots of time to read being a security guard. Shhh...

Love, Annamill

Books are for use.
Books are for all; or Every reader his book.
    Every book its reader.
Save the time of the reader.
A library is a growing organism.

                   — Shiyali Ramamrita Ranganathan (1892-1972)

Mary Kay is one of the secret masters of the world: a librarian. They control information. Don't ever piss one off.
                   —   Spider Robinson: The Callahan Touch

Forget about the Senior Prom and go to the library and educate yourself if you've got any guts. Some of you like pep rallies and plastic robots who tell you what to read. Forget I mentioned it...Rise for the flag, salute.
                    -- (Francis Vincent) Frank Zappa

I pray that no child of mine would ever descend into such a place as a library. They are indeed most dangerous places and unfortunate is she or he who is lured into such a hellhole of enjoyment, stimulus, facts, passion and fun.

                   -- Willy Russell

My Alma mater was books, a good library... I could spend the rest of my life reading, just satisfying my curiosity.

The university library I work in has applied for funding for an Archivist to work on material donated (after a lot of persuasion), and described as high academic status, but the university wants to support "research" into motor sport and - of all things - brewing, so guess what? We don't get our Archivist.

It looked like the sort of book described in library catalogues as "slightly foxed", although it would be more honest to admit that it looked as though it had beed badgered, wolved and possibly beared as well.

JOhn, come and try Newcastle-under-Lyme libary, it's had a make-over. They've rounded off all the corners, painted the walls pink, built some little alcoves to sit in, got lots of new videos, DVDs and CDs, and put up loads of big notices with easy to read lettering. They've also removed half of the books, but you can't fight progress, can you?

Yes, they do. At least in the Western US. The Rocky Mountain Spotted Book Fox is sometimes seen, but it is on the endangered species list -- it's considered "critical." It's habitat consists of thoughtful, insightful, well-written books and, well, it's another case of habitat destruction.

Here yah go!

QUIET!!

(That's a link, incidentally.)

Nancy Pearl, the model for the action figure, looks a bit like that, but she doesn't dress like that. It's an deliberate stereotype, done as a joke. She's on the radio (local NPR affiliate) once a week, talking with the host about her latest reading recommendations. She's married (unlike the stereotypical old-maid librarian). I don't know if she has any kids. She's a bookaholic, reads very fast, and absorbs several books a week:   all kindsa stuff, including mysteries, science fiction, general fiction, non-fiction. Good recommendations. I've read a lot of the stuff she's recommended, and she's never steered my to a book that I didn't agree was well worth reading.

She's also one helluva funny lady.

Libraries are a mark of a civilized society. In fact, I'm not sure civilization would be possible without them.

There is not much point in going to a library if you can't read. If you can, it opens up the Entire Universe for your exploration.

It helps if you can read without moving your lips.
