If you are a male and between 40 and 60 years old and are feeling angry, impatient, blaming, dissatisfied, sarcastic, anxious, hypersensitive, unappreciated, tense or unloving you may be a POOG - Pissed Off Old Guy.

According to Jed Diamond in "The Irritable Male Syndrome: Managing the Four Key Causes of Depression and Aggression" a decrease in testosterone that comes with aging and the stress and loss of self esteem that occurs with other life changes such as divorce, job layoffs or illness can produce Irritable Male Syndrome (IMS) where that all around nice guy you used to be has turned into a Jack Nicholson character.

Diamond suggests seeing a doctor to have your testosterone levels checked, since low testosterone is a leading cause of IMS. Looking after your body also helps - balanced diet, reduce alcohol etc. the usual good stuff.

This may be a good thing for us guys, now when our loved ones get on our case for the myriad of things we do to piss them off we can can claim it's not our fault it's due to our physiologic deficiency. The hormonal playing field has been leveled.

Well, I'm definitely in the age group, and I have cynical attitudes about any number of things, but I am definitely NOT part of the "disaffected middle-aged white male" group that seems to fall right in line with the entire neoconservative agenda.

There are a lot of those guys, and they're as grouchy as I am if not moreso, but I'm pissed off about entirely different things than they are (along with plenty of others, including more than a few fellow Mudcatters). In fact, THOSE GUYS piss us off about as much as anything!

Well I'm glad to see clarification.

I was always told that the proper acronym was the gender-neutral POOB.

While the acronym can be used for persons of either (or these days any) sex, the meaning(s) were given to me as:

Pissed Off Old Bastard

and

Pissed Off Old Broad - or Bat - or Bitch, depending on context and usage.

With a suitably clear surrounding context, Pissed ON sometimes might seem to apply as well, although a term with too many meanings creates confusion and pisses everybody off.

I dunno. I was very much a POYM (Pissed Off Young Man. I'm much more mellow now. Of course, job pressures, a failing marriage and incessant alcohol abuse may have had something to do with it.
