Subject: BS: Free FTP Software Advice From: GUEST,Bat Goddess at work Date: 09 Mar 05 - 02:59 PM There seem to be a lot of free FTP programs available for Windows, which is what I'm using at work. (At home I'm Mac all the way, so I'm a little out of the loop on Windows apps.) I'll be using it to FTP PDF files to our printer's FTP site. Nothing fancy, just getting them there in a timely fashion with the least amount of fuss. Any suggestions or caveats? I'm just twitchy (being on a PC) about downloading programs that might have nasty things attached or in their innards. Linn |
Subject: RE: BS: Free FTP Software Advice From: Bill D Date: 09 Mar 05 - 04:31 PM Lynn...the best I have found is Filezilla, which is one of the free, open source projects listed at SourceForge. There are several others which are just fine, but I tried 3-4 others before settling on this one. here is the list of Pricelessware...best free programs vothed on by the alt.comp.freeware newsgroup.. |

Subject: RE: BS: Free FTP Software Advice From: Amos Date: 09 Mar 05 - 06:49 PM There are lots of FTP apps for Macs too. Currently, I favor "Transmit". A |
Subject: RE: BS: Free FTP Software Advice From: GUEST,petr Date: 09 Mar 05 - 07:05 PM Im a printer and whenever my customers upload to our ftp site I recomend filezilla (its very straightfoward to use) i think transmit is the one we use for macs, (or fetch) cheers Petr |
Subject: RE: BS: Free FTP Software Advice From: Bat Goddess Date: 10 Mar 05 - 08:01 AM Thanks for all the info! Just discovered, actually, that I can copy the PDFs for print directly to the FTP site without any other software. Any advantages to using, say Filezilla, instead of just doing it directly? Thanks again. Linn |
Subject: RE: BS: Free FTP Software Advice From: mooman Date: 10 Mar 05 - 08:26 AM I have a Mac and find "Captain FTP" excellent for the website work I do (not sure if it's free but if not it's certainly inexpensive shareware). Peace Richard (still hoping to get to Boston and environs) |
Subject: RE: BS: Free FTP Software Advice From: s6k Date: 10 Mar 05 - 08:37 AM the best FTP program is SmartFTP (google it) its free, and the most popular and best one. plus it is from their website, not a download site with loads of programs on, that may have nasties in them |
Subject: RE: BS: Free FTP Software Advice From: GUEST,2clos Date: 24 Mar 05 - 09:23 AM Have you tried Fresh FTP? It has a clean interface. 2clos |
Subject: RE: BS: Free FTP Software Advice From: Mr Red Date: 24 Mar 05 - 03:48 PM I used FTP commander for a while. I use Dreamweaver. The only caveat is the time-out. It was not a problem originally but Dreamweaver will time-out before my new set-up has confirmed and it refuses to re-connect. As I remember with FTP commander it was not a problem. My solution is to invoke a connection from the browser and when the page comes-up - hit Dreamweaver. |
