Last month I went to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown NY.
I'm not in the hall of fame anymore. The bronze plaque section looked just like a mausoleum.

The name Red Stockings rumbled around several of the early professional leagues, including a franchise in Boston that was colloquially known as the Reds. I have seen it in print, but more in retrospective articles than in pieces dating from before the Great War.

The Boston franchise was founded in 1901 and was officially named the Red Sox in '07. In the interim they were casually referred to as the Americans and the Pilgrims and some other monikers that the sportswriters conferred on them so it's not inconceivable that were called the Stockings by some wag at some point.

Well, currently,
the New York Yankees are on a winning streak
and they just defeated the Boston Red Sox.

Did the latter team ever spell it
Boston Red Socks, I wonder?
Maybe they did over one hundred years ago?

Speaking as a lifelong San Francisco Giants fan, the Yankees Bobby Richardson's snag of Willie McCovey's line drive in the '62 series is burned in our memory.

Now, the early Mets teams, those were teams with character...and characters. I treasure my Marv Throneberry and Choo Choo Coleman baseball cards!

Auggie: I defer to your erudition; I was wrong.

I long ago adopted my sports-work-stoppage opinion, and it goes like this: "A curse on both your houses ~ but especially on the owners!" I'm afraid I haven't always kept up on all the details of each incident, whereas you obviously have been doing your homework.

Over the years I have often made the same argument that annamill just offered: that millionaire athletes should not be criticized any more than other millionaire entertainers, like movie stars and singers. Both groups are just taking what the market offers them, and why shuoldn't they capitalize on their combination of God-given talent, hard work, and good luck?

There is a difference, though. No matter how overpaid film actors and pop stars may be, the average person can still afford to go to the movies and buy CDs.

Not so for professional sporting events in the US. The corporate demand for season tickets, luxury boxes and suites, etc., has pushed the price of admission to ballgames to an absurdly high level. Of course, the games are available on TV to us masses, but actual attendance is getting out of reach for increasing numbers of fans.

There are two essential ingredients that go into the making of a sports fan.

1) you have to be smart enough to understand the game.

2) You have to be dumb enough to think it's important.

I was talking about 1986! I cried for three days! That was the day The Babe crossed over to agonize the Mets. Thought we poor BoSox fans had had enough. Let them win next time they could get up to the series.

Sorcha, normally I agree with you, but I have to disagree this time. Let's see.. Doctors go to University and resident about 12 years... Financial Analysts about 4 years. Engineers about, what 4 or 6 years.
I mean besides 12 years of school.

Most athletes spend their whole lives dedicated to their sport. Starting from childhood. No one screams when other professions, spending less time on their careers, make large amounts of money.

Granted, they are not saving the world, but they do give us pleasure and take away some of the pain and drearyness in this old world. How do you all feel about movie stars, or famous musicians who make mega-bucks? Do you hate them too? After all, exactly what is the difference between Elvis and Yastremski (famous Red Sox person)?

Both had enormous talent in their professions. Both had the love and admiration of their fans and brought in enormous amounts of money for themselves and their agents, wives, children. When I was 14 I had a picture of Elvis on my wall, and when I was 30 or so ( ;-) ) I had a picture of Carl on my wall, (as well as his Rookie card).

So they make a lot of money, so what! Why the hell shouldn't they? They have a short time to make their money before some ailment or another makes it impossible to play anymore. That's when the money stops. Make hay while the sun shines I say. Good on them.

Love, Annamill

Well, speaking as a big fan of the Big Easy, I normally wouldn't choose to disagree with Mardi Gras royalty, especially one who's posts I routinely enjoy, but I gotta think that you're mistaken on this one PoppaGator.

Major League Baseball fans have suffered through 8 work stoppages since 1972 (basically every time the collective bargaining agreement was about to expire). Without question, the stoppages of 1973,1976 and 1990 were lockouts, but the remaining five, in 1972, 1980, 1981, 1985 and 1994 would be hard to define as anything but strikes.
Your perception of the 94-5 fiasco as a lock out rather than a strike is in conflict with the published accounts of it found in virtually every print media outlet, from the mainstream periodicals and newspapers to articles in the Monthly Labor Review and the NLRB. All label 1994-5 as a strike.

You sure your not thinking of the NHL in 1994?

Auggie, the baseball work stoppage, like all such pro-sports events, was a LOCKOUT by the owners ~ NOT a strike by the players. True, both sides always share responsibility for their failure to successfully negotiate, but it's the owners who (a) offer those huge contracts to begin with and (b) use their fat-cat connections to influence media coverage of their labor-relations skullduggery.

Going to pro-sports games is ridiculously expensive, indeed, but I still enjoy following the teams to which I've become attached, almost entirely via TV and the print media.

The wife and I have been able to take in a few NBA games thanks to friends/acquaintances who don't use their season tickets every time. We can just about afford the $10 parking, the only expense involved in using a freebee ticket, and rarely if ever buy any of the overpriced food and drink. But we do enjoy watching the game, especially from the nice close-up seats we've been able to occupy.

I am amazed at the high-rollers sitting all around us, who are spending $100 or more per game for a pair of tickets, and then don't even watch the game closely, they're so busy running back and forth to the concession stand. The assholes in the very front row are the most unbelievable, obviously more interested in being seen than in seeing any basketball action, as they're waited on by the "in-seat service" staff, scarfing down $10 cocktails and $12 sushi platters.

At a baseball game, at least, the status-conscious fools are perched behind the real fans in their "luxury suites," so the rest of us can concentrate on the field without craning our necks to see around the high-roller patrons and their servants as they run back and forth to fetch drinks and snacks.

...but back then underpaid players were tempted by gangsters to throw games. Even after the 1919 "Black Sox" scandal, organized crime still had connections. Remember Durocher's banishment from baseball? I don't think we will ever know what happened.

The point I'm trying to make is that baseball always reflects the era. Today's game, with longer road trips, more travel, changed strike zones, etc., is different from Babe Ruth's era.

I doubt if Ruth would be able to hit so many home runs today. Of course, if he were playing today, he would have been 110.

Baseball? Who the hell wants to see a bunch of grown men doing drugs?
If I really wanna do that, I'll go back to visit my old friends from college, or maybe buy a ticket to a CSN concert. Either way, it won't cost me nearly as much, and stoners are so much more pleasant to be around than steroid users.

I grew up on Santo, Kessinger, Beckert and Banks and before that Cox, Reese, Robinson and Hodges (if you're young or live across the pond, the respective infields of the lowly mid 60's Chicago Cubs and the awesome early 50's Brooklyn Dodgers). Baseball was an great game back then, and played by a bunch of guys who for the most part were truly blue collar heroes. They left a great legacy which was first tarnished, and now, in my eyes, altogether lost.

Since the strike of 94-95, when despite an average salary of $1.8 million, these Major League whiners decided they just had to sit it out for 234 days to improve their standard of living, I have found it really hard to give a rat's ass about the entire sport. At the time, I made a promise to myself that the first year I earn $1,800,000, I'm going to go on strike as well.
I hope some day to be able to keep it, but that's about as likely as my caring about ML Baseball anytime soon.

Oh, and the Yankees? As always, %*#@! 'em.

I tend to agree with you Kendall. My passion for baseball relies on TV and radio more than on going to the game these days.   Minor league baseball still offers an alternative.

Now that we've heard from Yankees, Mets and Red Sox fans, I thought I'd chip in from the Great White North. Yes, friends and neighbours, there are some passionate ball fans north of the 49th. We're not all hockey pucks up here. The Toronto Blue Jays will not be battling for a wild card this year, or perhaps, for a few years to come, but I do enjoy watching a hungry young ballclub. They have some young hurlers who still have to earn their spurs in the bigs, and with Delgado gone, this team will shun the Moneyball aspect of the game that J.P. Ricciardi has espoused since his tenureas GM. Despite the success of the small market clubs like the Twins and A's over the past few seasons, their fans had to endure some pretty lean times. Billy Beane and Terry Ryan are astute GMs. In MLB, it is not a level playing field in financial terms between the clubs, and probably never will be. A lot of the high rent district teams will continue to spend. In other words, don't look for a salary cap now or in the near future. The Cubs have pitching, but they'd better hope Prior's injury is not serious. Kerry Wood has to stay healthy, as well. Also, the Cubbies will have to scratch and claw for runs in '05. In the AL, I hope Alan Trammell has a good year in Motown. I'm not a Tiger fan. However, he had to watch his Bengals play some lousy ball since he took over the reins as manager, but Detroit now has some decent young arms. Also, I think Mr. Trammell is a class act and deserves success. (just not against the Jays) Back to the NL, the Cardinals can still hit the hell out of the ball, but I think they lost some depth in their pitching, particualrly their relief corps. I don't know about everybody else, but I'm sick of hearing about steroids and seeing Jose Canseco mug on the tube, so I'm ready for the men in blue to shout, "PLAY BALL".

Not only have I been a Mets fan from Day One, I have a long history of affiliating myself with other losing teams, largely thanks to my move to New Orleans, where the entire city lives and dies with the almost-always-hapless NFL Saints.

Now we have the losingest team in the NBA as well, the Hornets (formerly of Charlotte, NC). Thanks to a couple of friends and aquaintances who own season tickets, Peggy and I have been able to attend several games this year and ~ improbable as it may be ~ the home team won every time until last week, when they dropped a one-point overtime thriller to the NJ Nets. We're going back tonight; the opposition (Memphis) has four starters on the injured list, so our hometown heroes stand a chance of winning again.

Ron ~ and any other NY/NJ area sports fans who might be checking in here: the Hornets one great hope for salvationa and future stardom is 19-year-old J.R. Smith, who was playing high-school ball last year at St. Benedict's Prep in Newark.

The program shows his home town as Freehold, NJ, which is a hell of a long way from Newark for a daily commute to high school. Maybe he bought his momma a new house after signing his multi-million dollar contract, and moved "down the shore" after graduation. Or maybe the Benedictines actually recruited a star athlete to attend their school from such a distance. Anyone know?

Thank you PoppaGator! I'm proud to say that I have been a Mets fan from their inception.   The last time I set foot in Yankee Stadium was 1978, and that was to see Jerry Koosman pitch with the Twins.

Unfortunately all baseball teams have gone down the same slippery slope where they will pay whatever they can to win a pennant. Still, there is something vile and evil about the Yankees.

And to the troll who rightfully brings up the issues of world hunger and lack of education, you can't stop modern culture - but you can help to change it. It is not obscene that people find pastimes and people are paid what the market will bear. You have found a pastime to post anonymous notes when you could be out feeding the poor.
