Subject: BS: A discussion - what is anti-cementism?
From: GUEST,Marion Burley Griffin
Date: 01 Apr 05 - 09:08 AM

Anti-cementism is a new reactionary movement comprised of people who want to turn back the architectural clock, and live in fake edwardian cottages.

Cement is really - well, the thing that holds everything together, and unlike steel rods and bricks, it is malleable, flexible, and beautiful.

I think people who are anticementic are just old fuddy-duddies.

To see how truly beautiful cement architecture can be, enter ..
the doors of cemention....

You have hit the nail on the head there Shambles - Concrete... is so deeply a part of the modern architectural lexicon that some people have risen up against it, and call it a flexi- con. But these anticementites, I believe they have a problem with the boundaries of their own egos - and so they have focussed unecessarily on cement as a symbol for their own unbound, scattered narcissist fantasies.

personally I think everyone should indulge in a little concrete - the world would be a better place.

Regardless of the modern feelings on this concrete is of a deep historical nature. The roman empire used it in aquaducts and bridges. It has survied thousands of years - and no amount of PC "coverup" is going to remove the signifigance of cement from our culture. We are stuck with it.

The petty difference, we yet not know..

Well a lot of it comes from Portland, some of it is named OPC or Ordinary Portland Cement. Cement is made by grinding up rock, you just keep on grinding and grinding and grinding.
Portland Bill has a very nasty and perilous undersea bank nearby which is marked by a lightship as it is a danger to sailors. The bank and the lightship are both called The Shambles.
Game set and match methinks!

Yes, George. There IS an alternative. One that is paper based. I'm interested in researching it with an eye toward putting it on a couple of hillside acres I have.

Concrete was invented before the wheelbarrow, and that was only invented when they built the Great Wall of China. Presumably someone finally realised that going back all that way for a few bricks each time was a bit of a pain.

"History & Manufacture of Portland Cement

In 1824, Joseph Aspdin, a British stone mason, obtained a patent for a cement he produced in his kitchen. The inventor heated a mixture of finely ground limestone and clay in his kitchen stove and ground the mixture into a powder create a hydraulic cement-one that hardens with the addition of water. Aspdin named the product portland cement because it resembled a stone quarried on the Isle of Portland off the British Coast. With this invention, Aspdin laid the *foundation* for today's portland cement industry."

I have no 'set' ideas on the matter on anti- cementism.

What I say - from 'the Isle of Portland off the British Coast' (the original and only true Portland) - has firm foundations.

I have a tune called after that very knob. One called Nicodemus Knob.

It think you are wrong about the sunames (if not about the weird people).

There are 4. Comben, Pearce, White, Stone.

Actually there are a lot more sunames than these four now - but there are a lot of them with these four sunames.

If not, all you Con-Cretin-ous blockheads can argue over cementics all you want, 'cause as you've shown, the stuff can make a formidable language barrier.

Bush being between Iraq and a hard place, knows how to mix it up, but, alas, he has no reason at all for all the rip-rap he is laying down all over that country. Strangely, the more of Iraq that is deconstructed by us, the more concrete is being transformed into dust.

As Bobby D. said, "The answer is blowin' in the wind."

I do wish that there were concrete reasons for Shrubs actions though.

P.S.----------
RIP RAP is made from the many Smallish rocks (but not small enough to be gravel)---often made by breaking up old cement and large rocks. It is used by the U.S. Army Corps Of Engineers to reinforce levees and shore lines along the rivers and waterways. STILL, the rushing waters can break it down---and carry it out to sea...

P.P.S.-------------
I am, and have never ever been guilty of anti-cementism !!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, some of my best friends are Small-ish (Rocks).

A raised fist holding one of these has become an inspirational stance for many dedicated ones these days.

Shambles - it depends on how far back you go. I had to go through the whole population of Portland looking for an ancestor who had vanished from the other end of the Bank in the 1841 census. I found him in Fleet.

But yes.. there are a few more than 3 surnames now.. but they'm all these yur vorriners who do be cumen in morn more you.

Anti-cementism. Is that what you get when concrete reaches the end of its recommended life, as some early buildings, -did I hear the Empire State?- are doing?
