Subject: BS: A discussion - what is anti-cementism? From: GUEST,Marion Burley Griffin Date: 01 Apr 05 - 09:08 AM Anti-cementism is a new reactionary movement comprised of people who want to turn back the architectural clock, and live in fake edwardian cottages. Cement is really - well, the thing that holds everything together, and unlike steel rods and bricks, it is malleable, flexible, and beautiful. I think people who are anticementic are just old fuddy-duddies. To see how truly beautiful cement architecture can be, enter .. the doors of cemention.... |

Subject: RE: BS: A discussion - what is anti-cementism? From: GUEST,Marion Burley Griffin Date: 01 Apr 05 - 09:37 AM You have hit the nail on the head there Shambles - Concrete... is so deeply a part of the modern architectural lexicon that some people have risen up against it, and call it a flexi- con. But these anticementites, I believe they have a problem with the boundaries of their own egos - and so they have focussed unecessarily on cement as a symbol for their own unbound, scattered narcissist fantasies. personally I think everyone should indulge in a little concrete - the world would be a better place. |

Subject: RE: BS: A discussion - what is anti-cementism? From: GUEST Date: 01 Apr 05 - 09:42 AM Regardless of the modern feelings on this concrete is of a deep historical nature. The roman empire used it in aquaducts and bridges. It has survied thousands of years - and no amount of PC "coverup" is going to remove the signifigance of cement from our culture. We are stuck with it. |

Subject: RE: BS: A discussion - what is anti-cementism? From: GUEST,Giok Date: 01 Apr 05 - 11:09 AM Well a lot of it comes from Portland, some of it is named OPC or Ordinary Portland Cement. Cement is made by grinding up rock, you just keep on grinding and grinding and grinding. Portland Bill has a very nasty and perilous undersea bank nearby which is marked by a lightship as it is a danger to sailors. The bank and the lightship are both called The Shambles. From: Alba Date: 02 Apr 05 - 09:45 PM "History & Manufacture of Portland Cement In 1824, Joseph Aspdin, a British stone mason, obtained a patent for a cement he produced in his kitchen. The inventor heated a mixture of finely ground limestone and clay in his kitchen stove and ground the mixture into a powder create a hydraulic cement-one that hardens with the addition of water. Aspdin named the product portland cement because it resembled a stone quarried on the Isle of Portland off the British Coast. Subject: RE: BS: A discussion - what is anti-cementism? From: GUEST,Art Thieme Date: 03 Apr 05 - 09:51 PM Bush being between Iraq and a hard place, knows how to mix it up, but, alas, he has no reason at all for all the rip-rap he is laying down all over that country. Strangely, the more of Iraq that is deconstructed by us, the more concrete is being transformed into dust. As Bobby D. said, "The answer is blowin' in the wind." I do wish that there were concrete reasons for Shrubs actions though. P.S.---------- RIP RAP is made from the many Smallish rocks (but not small enough to be gravel)---often made by breaking up old cement and large rocks. It is used by the U.S. Army Corps Of Engineers to reinforce levees and shore lines along the rivers and waterways. STILL, the rushing waters can break it down---and carry it out to sea... P.P.S.------------- I am, and have never ever been guilty of anti-cementism !!!!!!!!!!! Yes, some of my best friends are Small-ish (Rocks). A raised fist holding one of these has become an inspirational stance for many dedicated ones these days. Art Thieme |
