Subject: RE: Beach Music From: Joe Offer Date: 17 Apr 05 - 12:33 AM Well, I live in California, so this inspiring hymn comes to mind: Surfer Girl (Brian Wilson) Little surfer, little one, Make my heart come all undone; Do you love me, do you surfer girl? Surfer girl my little surfer girl I have watched you on the shore, Standing by the ocean's roar; Do you love me do you surfer girl Surfer girl surfer girl We could ride the surf together While our love would grow In my woody I would take you everywhere I go So I say from me to you I will make your dreams come true Do you love me, do you, surfer girl |

Or both?) ....and a couple of things by Gabby Pahanui or The Sons Of Hawaii spaced into the mix at decent intervals.Throw in a Bossa Nova guitar instrumental, and some Jan&Dean shake and stir and serve in generous proportions Now, when you say Beach Music down in the Carolinas, you're liable to discover that people think you're talking about the old R&B people down there, especially blacks, used to listen to when they were at the beach. A used record store in Carolina east of the nountains will have a large section marked Beach Music whrer you have almost as goodb a chance of finding good-time good-feeling R&B and Some soul as in the R&B section (where all the sadder, hard core bluesier stuff still resides. Beach Music denotes a feeling down there rather than any water or sand content. All for now, Severn I always wanted to do a hybrid of surf and bluegrass (but could neever hit those high notes): (to "California Girls") Well, The Eastern States are dandy So the Western people sa-a-ay' They've got NY and Chicago and St. Louie by the way They've got some hills in Minnesota where those rippling waters fa-a-all (oo-wooo-ooo) no changes can be taken boys upon the Wabash Canon [bass part] ba-ball-ball-ball-ball I wish you all could see them Kentucky Gur-r-rls! Pick it! (The harmonies and instrumentation to be mixed in your own imaginations) |

Subject: RE: Beach Music From: PoppaGator Date: 22 Apr 05 - 11:23 AM How 'bout Jan & Dean's Surf City: "Two girls for every boy"? Any pop song that was a summmertime hit during one's teenage years might well be associated with the beach for that person. I remember that Del Shannon's "Runaway" and Ernie K-Doe's "Mother-in-Law" were 1-2 at the top of the charts for one entire summer when I spent a memorable couple of weeks at the Jersey Shore at age 13 or 14. (Little did I know that I would meet and befriend the amazing Mr. K-Doe many years in the future and many miles away...) I've learned a few things about Carolina "Beach Music" in the intervening years. Within the seashore culture of Myrtle Beach SC and environs, this term refers to R&B music made by (mostly) black musicians to which (mostly) white teenagers could dance the Stroll. The single quintessential Beach Music song, supposedly, is "Stay" by Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs. Some of you younger folks who don't know the original recording might be more familiar with Jackson Browne's cover version, which features additional lyrics about loading out after the rock 'n' roll show. |

Subject: RE: Beach Music From: The Fooles Troupe Date: 24 Apr 05 - 05:10 AM In Australia, especially Queensland, "Beach music" usually meant the records (or the Radio station playing the appropriate music) that were piped over the loudspeakers from the local Surf Lifesavers Club House for the enjoyment of the nearby populace. It was the trend for those camping at the beach or nearby to stroll along the shore in the evening to escape the heat of the day. Raffle wheels were often set up for fund raising. Beach Boys & instrumentals - "Wipe Out" & other more languid tunes were popular - when the Beatles invaded, it began to be the end. |
