From: Jim Dixon

FORD FAIRLANE
As recorded by Bobby Pinson on "Man Like Me" (2005)

Dust on the dashboard, rust on the back door,
Daddy paid cash for that ol' four-door Ford Fairlane;
Bottle on the floorboard, butts in the ashtray
Where he sat and talked to Mama after she passed away.
Sittin' on some good years, parked there in the driveway,
He just let it go.

Hand-carved minnow hangin' from a cane pole
Layin' in the trunk, ready to go, case we passed a hole we had to fish.
Crack in the window, where dad pitched me one soft and low.
Had to duck his head; Mama said: "I guess he's got the hang of it."
Until now I didn't know why he never got that window fixed.
He just let it go.

The carburetor needs a kit.
The driver's-side visor's ripped.
It's getting a little hard to shift,
And the knobs are missing off the radio.
It's lost its glossy candy-apple shine.
The ink has faded on the for-sale sign.
The only driver that car ever owned.
The first million dollars takes it home.

The three on the tree was tough.
My feet barely reached the clutch ,
But Daddy'd let me fire it up,
Back it out and pull it in.

Dent in the fender, sin in the seat where
I found the pin that fell from her hair
The night me and Becky lost it.
Sixteen when I stole those keys.
I guess he'd been where we'd been,
'Cause he just let it go.

Dust on the dashboard, rust on the back door.
I wouldn't take a million dollars for that ol' four-door Ford Fairlane.

Subject: Lyr Add: 55 FORD (The Refreshments)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 12 Sep 15 - 01:28 AM

'55 FORD
As recorded by The Refreshments on "It's Gotta Be Both Rock 'n' Roll – Best of the Refreshments" (2006)

There's gotta be some changes made in my life.
I want to ride around in style, dressed sharp as a knife.
I'm tired o' walkin' around here all alone.
I need to get me a motor of my own.

If I had that car ever'thing would be fine.
All the beautiful women in town would be standin' in line.
They'll be chasin' me when I'm comin' on down the street,
Cryin': "Daddy, daddy, please let me take a seat."

That's the way it's gonna be.
Still it's just a fantasy
Till I can afford that '55 Ford,
Until I can afford that '55 Ford,
Until I get a hold of that '55 Ford.

A T-Bird convertible, that's all I need
To get me in the race and me in the lead.
With that V8 motor roarin' underneath the hood,
I'll be hot as the sun, feelin' fine, lookin' good.

That's the way it's gonna be.
Still it's just a fantasy
Till I can afford that '55 Ford,
Until I can afford that '55 Ford,
Until I get a hold of that '55 Ford.

[Instrumental break]

First it warms your heart then it reads your mind.
It's got trigger torque power with a Thunderbird line,
Detachable top, whitewall tires, Neptune green,
Automatic transmission—it's the finest thing you've seen.

I don't mind savin' all my dough,
'Cause it's simply the only way I know
To change my cloudy skies into blue.
Now with the cab top down, baby, I'm comin' after you.

That's the way it's gonna be.
Still it's just a fantasy
Till I can afford that '55 Ford,
Till I can afford that '55 Ford,
Until I get a hold of that '55 Ford.

A ditty from my childhood days:

If you want to buy a wreck, buy a Ford
Four buckled wheels and a board
A biscuit tin
With the top bashed in
If you want to buy a wreck, buy a Ford

I don't know if there is any more.

John Brown's Ford had a puncture in its tire

Tune: Battle Hymn of the Republic
Make up motions/sounds for elements of the song. Delete one word each time around, and make the sound/motion instead of the word. Example for the last time around:

John Brown's Ford had a "ssssss" in its [make circle with arms]
And he patched it up with [make gum-chewing motion]

A parody of 'That Old Fashioned Mother of Mine' learned in Liverpool when I was at school.

Just an old fashioned Ford car with old fashioned seats,
And an old fashioned driver in front.
An old fashioned garage where in it does go
When the end of a long day has come.
Though it has no bright hubcaps or lights in the front
There is something that makes it divine,
For the angels above come and give a quick rub
To that old fashioned Ford car of mine.

A bit of useless trivia: The reason Ford painted his Model T cars black is because black dried quicker than any other color.

I got a Taurus from my friend Animal X. Having been ticketed twice in 40 minutes for driving an uninspected vehicle, I decided it was high time I took the thing to the local garage. It was there that I discovered that, according to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, my Taurus is a Crown Victoria. It seems Animal X didn't know that her Crown Vic was also a Ford, so she got the wrong title. I now have both in my purse, and, as soon as Animal X feels up to dealing with bureauocracy, I will get things straightened out. But this may take a while. I suppose it serves me right for getting a car from someone named Animal X. If anyone wants to write a song about this, they are welcome to do so.

Subject: Lyr Add: TAKE IT EASY (Jackson Browne)
From: open mike
Date: 05 May 06 - 06:12 PM

i posted this right after my post #99
and it should have been #100, but did
not go thru..the Ford shows up in the third verse

TAKE IT EASY
(Jackson Browne and Glenn Frey)

Well I'm a-running down the road trying to loosen my load
I've got seven women on my mind
Four that want to own me, two that want to stone me
One says she's a friend of mine

Take it easy, take it easy
Don't let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy
Lighten up while you still can
Don't even try to understand
Just find a place to make your stand and take it easy

Well I'm a-standin' on the corner in Winslow, arizona
With such a fine sight to see
It's a girl, my lord, in a flatbed Ford
Slowin' down to take a look at me

Come on baby, don't say maybe
I've got to know if your sweet love is gonna save me
We may lose and we may win
But we will never be here again
Open up I'm climbin' in to take it easy

Well I'm a-running down the road trying to loosen my load
Got a world of trouble on my mind
Lookin' for a lover who won't blow my cover
She's just a little hard to find
Take it easy, take it easy
Don't let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy
Come on baby, don't say maybe
I've got to know if your sweet love is gonna save me

You know we got it easy
We oughta take it easy

"Grandpa has a car, it is a Ford machine
His whiskers come in handy for straining gasoline"

this line comes from the song Grandpa's Whiskers..
and here is the chorus...
Oh they're always in the way, the cows chew them for hay,
they hide the dirt on Grandpa's shirt, they're always in the way.

There was a line about grandma chewing on his whiskers at night
and dreaming of shredded wheat...

now i can't seem to recall ano of the other verses...

does anyone else?

(and couldn't twin pipes mean dual exhaust pipes?)

Back in my misspent youth (7th grade, to be exact), we sang, with typical 7th grade dirty minds, a song called In The Shade of the Old Model-T.

Sorry, I'm not 12 years old any more, and as laid-back as Mudcat is, I'm not about to give you the words here.   If you just can't live without the words (as best as I might remember them), you'll have to PM me.

OLD BILL MOSER'S FORD
(Vernon Dalhart)

Old Bill Moser rode a horse till the old horse died one day;
Then he tried to buy a Ford, but the dough he couldn't pay;
So he went and stood the rent man off and made a payment down.
He was prouder than a settin' hen as he drove it round the town.

Old Bill Moser nursed his Ford like a baby two weeks old.
He even wrapped it up at night for fear it might take cold;
And if you asked him for a ride, he'd never take a chance.
Before you ever got aboard, you'd have to dust your pants.

He started home from work one day, driving his Ford along,
Making forty miles an hour with his engine singing a song.
Dick Massey's Ford came up behind and as he turned a curve.
He hit Bill Moser in the rear and busted up his nerve.

It almost broke Bill Moser's heart to see his Ford bent up.
He said the dern thing looked just like a chain gang's drinking cup.
He turned and looked in Massey's face and the words came fast and hot.
I could repeat just what he said, but I guess I'd better not.

Now Bill's workin' night and day to pay the rent man off.
His Ford looks like the tenent blues and the engine's got a cough,
With an old flat tire and bailing wire and a piece of hickory board.
That's all there is. They ain't no more of old Bill Moser's Ford.

Mary Jane Lamond Bho Thìr Nan Craobh

Dan Do Shean Ford (Song To An Old Ford)

Chorus (after each verse):
Tha buaidh air an uisge bheatha
Tha buaidh air 's cha ghabh e cleith
Tha buaidh air an uisge bheatha
Dh'òlainn tè is fuar i

An cuala sibh 's an àite so
Mu 'n Ford a fhuair an Lamanach
Gu fan i far am fàgar i
Mur tàimear i cha ghluais i

'S e sud an car tha cunnartach
Ma thàras i air buill' thoirt dhuit
An làrach far an cuir i thu
Gu fuirich thu 'nad shuain ann

Ma ghluaiseas e do 'n bhaile rith
A steach Black Brook gu 'n caillir i
Cha dèan i cnoc Iain Shalaich dheth
'S cha toir a h-anail suas i

'S gu 'n d'thuirt Dòmhnaill Angus ris
An déidh dha chuis a rannsachadh
Tha 'n uidheam stiùiridh cam oirre
Mu 'n dèan i call, cuir uait i

Nis crìochnaichidh mi 'n dan so dhuibh
An dùil gu 'n dèan sibh fabhar leam
Na innsibh e do 'n Lamanach
Mur fàs e ann an gruaim rium

Chorus (after each verse):
There's benefit in the whiskey
It's good for you, that can't be denied
There's benefit in the whiskey
I'd take a drink of it cold

Did you hear around this area
Of the Ford that Lamond got
It'll stay where it's left
And won't move unless it's towed

That's a car that's dangerous
If it gives you a thump
Wherever it sets you down
You'll stay there, knocked out

If he goes to town with it
It'll lose steam by Black Brook
It won't make it up Dirty John's hill
It hasn't got the power

Donald Angus said to him
The man who checked it out
"The steering is all bent
Before it causes serious damage, get rid of it"

Now I'll finish this song for you
And hope you'll do me this favor
Don't tell this to Lamond
In case he gets upset with me

Tune: On the Road to Gundagai
Don't know the author

There's a T-Model Ford made of rubber tin and board
Upon the road to Gundagai.
The spark plugs are missin',the radiator's hissin'
And the oil tank's running dry.

There's water in the petrol, there's sand in the gears
And it hasn't seen a garage for over forty years
You oughta hear it roar when you shove it to the floor
Along the road to Gundagai.

Cheers, Joy

Chris Smither also does a great version of "No Money Down."

There are also songs with "Ford" verses like "Give Me Oil in My Lamp" with:

"Give me gas for my Ford
Keep me truckin' for the Lord."

(I went to church camp once)

I remembered one more verse from Dear Dad by Chuck Berry. This is verse two , I think.

Dad I'm in grave danger out here tryin' to drive,
The way this Ford wiggles when approachin' forty-five.
She just starts actin' up just like a little stubborn pup.         The cars whizzin' past me, Dad, looks like I'm backin'up

According to the documentary I saw, Henry hated the new model A Ford. In fact, he destroyed the prototype with an axe.

The Dixie Ramblers recorded Ridin' In An Old Model "T" in 1937 as a string band instrumental with no lyrics. Seems to me to be a strange name for a tune with no words, but I haven't found any...

From: leftydee

Chuck Berry had a great Ford song called "Dear Dad".

The best I can remember it....

Dear Dad, don't get mad, what I'm asking for,
Is by the next semester can I get another car?
This one keeps a missin' on the wide open road,
I might as well be walkin' as to drive this old Ford

She just ain't got the appetite for gas somehow,
and Dad, I got four carberators hooked upon her now,
I tried to hook another see if it'd do a little good,
But there ain't no place to put it lest I perferate the hood

So Dad send the money, see what I can see
Try to find a Cadillac, a sixty-two or three
Something that won't worry us and keep me on the road
Sincerely Your Beloved Son, Henry Junior Ford

Played with a standard Berry blues pattern. There may be more lyrics but I don't recall. Hey..... it's from about 45 yrs ago, gimme a break!   Lefty

Henry Ford was asked by a lady if she could have a Model-T painted red. He replied, "You can have it in any color you want as long as it's black."

As to fascist connection, read this for starters.

WE'll have fun, fun, fun
til daddy takes the T-Bird away..

but then, again, i have heard that
Henry Ford had some political views
that might be aligned with fascism..

i heard it form this song..by David Rovics,,
http://www.davidrovics.com/ he comments here:
"Henry Ford Was A Fascist In fact, he was a
proud fascist, along with what's his name,
GW's grandpa. History is not nearly as
clearcut as the victors would have us believe. "

any one have any further on this?

Just noticed I have made essentially the same post twice. Where HAS my memory gone. It was ringin' a bell, but obviously not loudly enough for this ol' boy to hear.

From: pdq

John Hammond did the hell out of this one at Newport Folk...

"No Money Down" - Chuck Berry

As I was motivatin'
Back in town
I saw a Cadillac sign
Sayin' "No Money Down"
So I eased on my brakes
And I pulled in the drive
Gunned my motor twice
Then I walked inside
Dealer came to me
Said "Trade in you Ford
And I'll put you in a car
That'll eat up the road
Just tell me what you want
And then sign on that line
And I'll have it brought down to you
In a hour's time"
I'm gonna get me a car
And I'll be headed on down the road
Then I won't have to worry
About that broken - down, ragged Ford
"Well Mister I want a yellow convertible
Four - door de Ville
With a Continental spare
And a wide chrome wheel
I want power steering
And power brakes
I want a powerful motor
With a jet off - take
I want air condition
I want automatic heat
And I want a full Murphy bed
In my back seat
I want short - wave radio
I want TV and a phone
You know I gotta talk to my baby
When I'm ridin' alone"
Yes I'm gonna get that car
And I'm gonna head on down the road
Yeah, then I won't have to worry
About that broken - down, ragged Ford
"I want four carburetors
And two straight exhausts
I'm burnin' aviation fuel
No matter what that cost
I want railroad air horns
And a military spot
And I want a five - year guarantee
On everything I got
I want ten - dollar deductible
I want twenty dollar notes
I want thirty thousand liability"
That's all she wrote
I got me a car
And I'm headed on down the road
No money down
I don't have to worry
About that broken - down, ragged Ford

Old buddy of mine--passed on now, named Sean Gagnier--used to sing the following when he was of a mind to. The song was entitled "Outta Sight, Outta Mind".

"And every night
I close the light then
I pray and ask the Lord,
Why every car
That passes by sounds
Just like your Ford.

Outta sight, outta mind
That's all I am to you
Just your friend what can I do
Outta sight, outta mind."

It was done to a C+W chording and rhythm with that 'play it backwards and the dog lives, wife comes home, pickup starts' sorta sound.

The Berrymans have a song called "speculator" that starts ....
Oh we're never, never bored when we're ridin' in the Ford, cause we got a speculator on the dash

Song: The Storms of Life
Artist: Randy Travis

          D
There's a dirty piece of cardboard
    G
that reads Montgomery Ward
A                        D
taped across the window of my old Ford.
                                  G
A six-pack on the front seat and a box of chicken wings,
A                                                 D    D7
I'm dialin' 'cross the radio for a song that I can sing

G
I'd better change my wandrin ways,
D
I know I've seen my better days,
A                              D    D7
always gettin' high when I get low.
       G
Well, I left my soul out in the rain,
D
Lord, what a price I've had to pay.
A                                 D
The storms of life are washin' me away.

An old mail pouch, tobacco sign
fadin' on the barn,
bringin' back sweet memories of Mama's farm/
When love was just a country girl that lived on down the road.
Spoken: you know, she almost had me turned around,
but that was years ago.

I'd better change my wandrin ways,
I know I've seen my better days,
always gettin' high when I get low.
Well, I left my soul out in the rain,
Lord, what a price I've had to pay.
The storms of life are washin' me away.
Yeah, the storms of life are washin' me away.

PASS YOU BY (Gillian Welch / David Rawlings)
Track 3 from "REVIVAL" (Almo, AMSD-80006)

VERSE 1:
            D
I've got an old V - 8, from the year I was born
       G                     F          Em7
Don't look like much, just a flat black Ford
       D
But the engine's clean, I could paint her some day
    G                           F             Em7
But most of the time, I think I like her this way

CHORUS:
      G
Don't turn no heads, don't catch no eye
          D                               Bb   F Em7 D
I'm just a wind on the road, gonna pass you by

VERSE 2:
Well I used to talk tough, and I used to get loud
Want to paint my name, all over this town
But folks lined up, just to dog my day
Now if I stay quiet, they stay out of my way

(CHORUS)

VERSE 3:
I got a brand new plan, gonna help myself
'Cause it's the fat man's turn, gonna share the wealth
Put the money in the bag, and keep your hands in sight
Turn around, count to ten, I'll go back into the night

(CHORUS)

CODA:
Don't call for help, don't scream, don't cry
Just a wind on the road, gonna pass you by.
