Why does Julie Ellison have a Permathread and not all of the hundreds of other folk singers out there?

I must confess that I've never heard Julie Ellison. In fact, outside of Mudcat, I've never eaven heard of her. So I'm not saying she's not good or anything. This is not a flame against her?

It's just why Julie Ellison and not Jean Ritchie or Eve Goldberg?

If you are not trying to flame, then why don't you provide a name then?

presumably because she wanted you to know about her activites and these other people really can't be arsed one way or the other.

Still doesn't answer the question, who is Julie Ellison ?

First of all, for those who do not know me, I am John Robinson. I am Julie's partner (in life and record label). I look after Julie's publicity, live sound and CD production (and I usually drive the van!).

To answer the first question, I moved to using a permathread because Joe Offer and I agreed that it was a better option than using a normal thread. A permathread allows me to delete and edit old postings thus keeping the thread up to date and (hopefully) easy to read.

There was a discussion about the pros and cons of permathreads at that time so I will not repeat those here. As far as a I am aware though Joe is willing to set up a permathread for anyone who asks for one. You then have to take responsibility for maintaining it yourself of course.

To answer the second question, Julie Ellison is a guitarist and songwriter who tours in the UK - hopefully soon internationally. She has one CD out so far, with various other projects including Andy Manson's Mermaid guitar sculpture and a couple of collaborative projects in progress. Samples of her music and a current gig list can be found at www.JulieEllison.co.uk.

Hope this helps. If anyone wishes to contact me directly please feel free to call me on +44 (0) 1709 881339 or email John@Acoustyistics.co.uk.

Why not Julie Ellison. The lady in question may be just a name to many of us but then so are most of the regional idols that crop up so often here.
If these people are performing and/or recording etc then more power to all of them.
You never know, simply reading about them here may out some of us on to fine music.

"Why Julie Ellison?"

She is a very fine accomplished guitarist and singer songwriter, her CD is well worth a listen. If she is performing near you I recommend you give her a listen and I don't think you will be disappointed.

She would be well liked in the States as well.

very professional.

of all the acts I've booked she alone promoted herself on local radio.

very warm person, the best female guitarist by a long way and better than most men, infact she is bloody good, probably due to all the practice she has put in to master the correct tachniques.

does not ask for over inflated fees as do some I could mention, will not expect your club to take a loss.

Great voice.

and john can do a turn too.

Any one can set up a perma thread , I've got two, ya boo.

Good luck Julie, go grab an oyster, the world.

Bet shes greatful for this thread, thanks guest, have you done your homework yet?

Have you heard of Anthony John Clarke?

he's appearing at Wimborn next w/end and in St Albans on Sunday at the Spotlight, Royal British legion, where Julie has already appeared and drew the best numbers so far!!

Yup! I agree with you Breezy. I'm listening to Julie right now via her website. She's a great guitarist and has a beautiful voice, warm and mellow.....hope she comes down to Devon one day....we'd love to see her playing live. I read a great review of her CD "At Last" in Folk on Tap recently. I also love the way that John promotes her. What a Lad!! Well done John!

Hope Julie keeps going from strength to strength.

I'm happy to set up PermaThreads for posting schedules and updated information for performers and folk clubs (or their representatives) who are regular participants in the Forum. The only "catch" is that you have to be a regular participant here, and you have to keep the information in the thread up-to-date. Contact me by personal message, and we can talk about it.
And no, you can't have a PermaThread and be an unregistered guest - you have to be registered with a full name and address, so I know who I'm dealing with.

I echo all of the positive comments above about Julie, she's a truly class act who transcends any sort of tag - folk, jazz, country, blues, she's all of the above and none of them. Julie's a stunning guitarist (listen to the ragtime accompaniment on 'Southbound'), has a wonderful warm and yes, 'sexy', voice (sorry Julie but it's true!) and is a writer of fine songs - 'Angels' is both beautiful and shocking, leaves audiences stunned, and has to be THE most moving song I've ever heard bar none (not on the CD but is an absolute MUST for the next one - JE/JR please note!). Oh yes, and she's a very nice lady too!

And a word for John Robinson, who's Julie's soundman, roadie, PR man, agent, recording engineer, partner and another thoroughly good egg.

If you see Julie's on anywhere near you, go and see her - you'll have a good time.

PS - Julie's a Yorkshire-dweller, but she's not from Yorkshire! Kent methinks. Obviously decided to move up in the world! :-)

She has a permathread cos she derserves one!
John (often posting as Cittern on here) has always taken the time and trouble to post her activities on this board - there's nowt stopping ANY other doing just the same.
Then, when they're regular participants here, they too might get the same Joe 'Offer'.
And why not.

Julie is a damned fine performer, writer and excellent acoustic guitar player - I wholeheartedly recommend those that haven't heard her to give her a long hard listen.

I'm only too pleased to receive ALL news of folk artists and events by this Mudcat vehicle.... be it Punch the Horse, Howden Jones, El Greko - anyone!
To be informed is better than to be ignorant - and one can always ignore those items one doesn't wish to 'open'.

Who are you 'guest' - why hide?

Blimey - what can I say?

eric the red:-

I thought I'd fixed the link but clearly not - I've also noticed I've made the same mistake in other threads - will fix it once I've posted this reply.

eric the red & strollin johnny:-

Yes, we reside in Sarth Yorkshire although since demolition is the chosen future for the house we'll be on the move shortly. Julie is originally from Kent, which is one reason she seems to be on a roll down there.

breezy:-

yes I can do a turn, I often do several and end up going around in circles - I have also been known to have a funny turn, but that's another story. Oh, and great hi-jack by the way !!

Lizzie:-

Hi Lizzie - great to hear from you - who needs the Beeb - 'er well actually we do so I'd better not say any more ;-) - a PM will be on its way to you on such things as soon as I get a second. And keep your eye out for the NEXT issue of "Folk on Tap"!

SteveP (acousticstage.net) :-

thanks for the continued air(net?)play !
To anyone who hasn't yet come across the acousticstage - take a listen - great stuff (note to self - must get broadband in the next house)

Joe :-

thanks once again for the perma threads, and of course a great community overall

Strollin Johnny :-

work proceeds on "Angels" - as you say a powerful song and one which needs some careful handling - we are working on it

Dunc/HFA :-

Hello !

Thanks to everyone for their positive comments. You have broadened my smile!
Link fixed - you have to have http:// in links to sites outside of Mudcat.

Doh !?!

How can I fix the link in a previous posting when this isn't the perma thread ....

Julie's website is www.julieellison.co.uk

And now that I'm on a roll, take a look at the Mermaid. First ever public performance coming up soon in Exeter (see Julie's gig list for details).

I'm on a roll with these clickies now ....

John....I am SO impressed! It was only on 4th June I was wishing that Julie would be coming down to Devon and then today I tune in to find that she's coming to Exeter on June 17th!

I've phoned up the Phoenix Theatre and looked at Julie's website, where you say she'll be actually playing The Mermaid Guitar!! Ohhhh there'll be some jealous Boysies around on that night! Just don't go into Andy Mansons' music shop in Exeter John, or else you'll never come out! I have my own musician who loiters around there....dreaming wistfully of Mermaids and Mandocellos! ;0)

So...we'll be there on the 17th somewhere between 7 and 8pm. Hope to see you there. Gosh.....'tis exciting isn't it!

Now then John, are you any good at granting wishes to do with Captain Jack Sparrow? 'Cos if you are.....well....I was just wondering......if................... ;0)

It will be great to meet you Lizzie. I'll be the one looking scared and nervous at the sound desk!   We spent several days playing with mics and PA at Andy's home prior to the Mermaid going on exhibition so fingers crossed - but we are in new territory here !!

The exhibition area is quite small but the room is looking really good. White walls and white drapes hung from the ceiling - very decorative and peacful.   Sharing the space with a multi-media re-creaction of an old harpsichord. It's great !

Any catters in Exeter or nearby - the performance will be for 30 minutes and will include a piece of music written especially for the Mermaid. I think the advice is arrive at 6:30 for a 7pm start - not sure of what else is happening at the event but it is worth supporting if you can make it.

Cheers
John (aka cittern).

We are expecting at least two video cameras in the audience. The BBC said they may call today (but I'm not holding my breath). Various other projects in the pipeline as well ....
