I'll be damned...that means he'll 140 something when they let him back out on the streets. No one will be safe then!

Notice that there have been no public apologies or expressions of remorse from the players or the system that fostered his actions. If they could, they'd no doubt like to return to the days when you could string up a black 'thout worrying about the consequences. Note also the failure of so many US Senators to join in the formal apology for that shameful era. Thank G-d we ain't where we wuz, but we still got a l-o-n-g ways to go.

Wasn't he the senator from West Virginia?

I found this John:
James Killen is the 80-year-old Baptist preacher and former Klansman accused of masterminding the murders of three civil rights workers on June 21, 1964. His defense argues that he was just a run-of-the-mill Klansman who took no part in decision making; the prosecution argues that he was a kleagle, or a recruiter, in the Mississippi Klan, which is the rank held by Senator Robert Byrd (D-West Virginia) in his State's KKK.

Killlen's trial is expected to be the last of a Klansman for a civil rights era murder. The perpetrators of that era's racism are dying or finding their way belatedly to prison.

Byrd, though, has suggested that he will seek another Senate term when his current one expires in 2006.

Run of the Mill KKK member! Nothing run of the mill regarding the KKK

Best Wishes
Jude

Byrd has been a friend to the progressives, for a good many years. He's the man who stopped the Clinton impeachment. He's called Bush to account more than once. When he was young, and stupid, he belonged to the KKK, probably for the same reason Harry Truman joined, so that he could get votes. It is a pretty safe bet that Byrd was, likewise a Mason, a Shriner, a Moose, a Kiwanian, an Elk, an Eagle, and anything else that would take him. I wouldn't be surprised if he had some affiliation with the Knights of Columbus. Politicians do all kinds of things to get themeselves elected.
Joining the Klan was dumb. Though I'll bet it seemed like an excellent idea at the time.

Putting an 80 year old man in prison though. Most 80 year old men cannot look after themselves at home. How will he manage in prison.

It was a bad thing he did, but we should show some christian decency.

Lady Jean the article says " a kleagle, or a recruiter, in the Mississippi Klan, which is the rank HELD by Senator Robert Byrd (D-West Virginia) in his State's KKK."

Does this indicate that Byrd is still a member of the KKK?
Does anyone know?

I copied the article only because it pointed out that the Murderer, Killin was not a Senator and was actually very surprised when I seen Byrd's name.

I myself will show Killin the exact same amount of mercy and decency that he gave to his Victims. NONE

First of all, Senator Byrd shows me courage in the way he has chosen to change his own attitudes than the other 99 Senators combined... He is a case study in the power of man to overcome adversity... He has jsut released a book where he again apologizes fir things he did in his youth...

Has George Bush ever apologized fir anything he has screwed up in his drunk-frat-boy life???

No!!!

Secondly, I don't think that imprisonin' the "preacher", which he ain't 'cause he can't possibly be hooked up with the God that I know, will serve society of him.... I'd give him 10 years of community service.... I don't care if it's just drivin' a car to deliver meals-on-wheeels 'er pushin' himself in a wheel chair at the local state run nursing home spendin' time with folks....

Prison is too good fir him or society... Make him pay the hard way.... thru community service....

Bobert

Senatofr Byrd has not been a member of the Klan going back almost 5 decades.... That is a long time to be apologizin' fir is upbringin'... Folks in Wes Ginny back in the 40's were purdy danged racist and in many parts of Wes Ginny, still are today... The fact that this man has gone so far in correctin' his own demons and has demonstarted time and time agin in the Senate that he is a man who has changed speaks volumns about this man and his inner character....

He is what George Bush will never be...

... great man and an ispiration to anyone who is trying to make themselves a better person,,,

Thanks Bobert for clearing this up for me.

The article then should read "a rank which USED to be held nearly 50 years ago by Senator Robert Byrd (D-West Virginia).
"Senator Byrd is a case study in the power of man to overcome adversity... He has just released a book where he again apologizes for things he did in his youth."

It does indeed take more to tell the Truth than to cover it up.
I am relieved.
Thank you Bobert and to you Lady Jean.

The power of one word can change the meaning and one's perspective if inserted in the wrong context. This would indeed seem to be the case with this particluar article.
As I said my only reason for posting "the article" was to answer John Hardly's question, that 'Killin' was NOT a Senator.
I made a poor choice to make that point.
I apologize for that.

Best of Wishes to all
Jude

I think he should make restitution to the families of the men that were killed. They should wipe out his bank account and all of his assets should be sold and distributed among the victim's families.

I can think of a few community service jobs that might fit the crime. Maybe he should tend the graves in a cemetery or live in a shelter and serve the people on the street. Failing restitution, he should go to jail and live out his days as a shoe shine boy in a predominately Black prison.

Quite frankly, I have no sympathy for a man who has managed to evade the law and live a free life for all of these years. I can't think of a punishment strong enough.

"Putting an 80 year old man in prison though. Most 80 year old men cannot look after themselves at home. How will he manage in prison."
wee little drummer

In prison he will have 24-hour care, a balanced diet and hospital facilities nearby. He'll probably live better than he did at home. Look at Rudolph Hess- lived practically forever before he finally managed to kill himself.

Hopefully he'll get fucked up the ass every night by his large African-American cellmate.

Ahhhhh, why would you want that, Matt R....

I'd say that havin' him work in all black nursing home would be a lot more compassionate... and fittin'....

When we take upon ourselves to be as vindictive as our foes, we have lost...

Peace,

When we take upon ourselves to be as vindictive as our foes, we have lost... (Bobert)

Good on you, Bobert, to remind us of that. But why do you recommend in the same post a treatment, namely forced labour for an 80 year old man, that is in violation of the UN Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners?

Wolfgang
