Subject: RE: Chords: Pride of Petravore From: PoohBear Date: 07 Jul 05 - 10:56 AM Chico, thanks for putting this song up. I'd forgotten about it but it used to be one of my favorites. Me and my swiss-cheese memory cannot currently remember which recording we have but I've been wanting the chords so I'll have a better chance of adding it to my repetoire. Thanks again! Cheers PB |
Subject: RE: Chords: Pride of Petravore From: PoohBear Date: 07 Jul 05 - 10:58 AM Question: You've spelled it 'Petravore'. The recording I have sounds more like 'Petrovare'. Any input from sources on which is correct? PB |
Subject: RE: Chords: Pride of Petravore From: chico Date: 08 Jul 05 - 02:57 AM My source is "The Contemplator" http://www.contemplator.com/ireland/eileen.html My chords are based on his midi (and based on the Cumberland Three's rendition, at least I think it was cumberland, might have been Chad Mitchell trio?) |
Subject: RE: Chords: Pride of Petravore From: Peace Date: 08 Jul 05 - 03:06 AM Am seeing it many places spelled Petrovar. And yes, the Chad Mitchell Trio recorded it. |
Subject: RE: Chords: Pride of Petravore From: PoohBear Date: 08 Jul 05 - 10:33 AM After much pondering (think, think....think, think) it may be a recording of Ian and Sylvia that I have of this song. |

Subject: RE: Chords: Pride of Petravore From: Big Al Whittle Date: 19 May 06 - 03:59 AM For a totally knockout version live, catch up with No Fixed Abode featuring the wonderful voice of Una Walsh. Una's from County Louth. If they haven't sung it, request it.....it really is worth a listen. No Fixed Abode are at Belcvoir Castle Festival this weekend and Crich Festival next, and sometime later in the year they're at the Fylde festival. catch up with them! Incidentally Christy Moore mentions the song in his autobiography as one of his father's favourites. |

Subject: RE: Chords: Pride of Petravore From: Charley Noble Date: 19 May 06 - 02:44 PM I suspect some folkies worked up their recordings from one that Richard Dyer-Bennet did back in the 1950's, now available from the Smithsonian recording project. I can still hear his version ringing in my ears. I always thought it had a vaguely Russian sound but the lyrics are Irish dialect. Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: Chords: Pride of Petravore From: Charley Noble Date: 19 May 06 - 02:52 PM According to the Smithsonian Folkways website the Dyer-Bennet recording was Vol. 9, from 1960. I note that his 1601 Mark Twain recitation is now also available on CD. Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Chords: Pride of Petravore From: Midchuck Date: 19 May 06 - 04:10 PM Us woodchucks did it on our first ('95) tape/CD (blurb). A fairly obvious rip-off of Ian & Sylvia's version, but we figured that was OK since very few people were left alive who remembered Ian and Sylvia's version. Peter |
