Subject: BS: Any Central New York Mudcatters?
From: SingsIrish Songs

I've moved to the area after being in California for 10 years...was wondering if there are any Mudcatters in the Central NY area (ie Syracuse and surrounding regions).

Thanks.

Mary

Hey Mary,

I'm in the very northern tier of PA...about 20 minutes from Elmira and an hour or so from Ithaca. Welcome to the East!!! :) What brought you out this way?

MMario is between LF and you, and my husband and I are a bit south of LF, an hour S of Elmira. My husband and I go north on days off sometimes, so we all might meet up somewhere central.

We also host visiting Mudcatters in the Mudcat Attic Dorm, I'm a bit rushed but perhaps LF could post a link?

Welcome to Winter!

I'm in Syracuse--actually born and raised here. So, really, I'm back home and loving it.

In the last year or so I've kinda been neglecting my music interests. I really need to get back into it, and what better place to try to do that than Mudcat. (Once upon a time I used to be a regular here, perhaps I will be again.)

Cheers,

Mary

If you're in Syracuse, you might be interested in knowing that there is a big musical grassroots event coming up in Trumansberg....I'll post more if you are interested! I'm hoping to go to it for a day or two.

welcome home! I seem to recall seeing the handle previously.

Don Miexner is in Jordan - just a bit west of Syracuse. There are several open mike sessions in the area I know of - one in Jordan, one in Baldwinsville.

I thought I'd post a bit more about the music festival in Trumansburg, NY.

Ok....

Finger Lakes Grassroos Festival of Music & Dance
July 21-24
Trumansburg, NY

It looks like it's going to be a wide genre of music with lots of dancing and food and fun! I haven't seen a website address for it yet, but if I find one, I'll be sure to post it. :)

Thanks for the info. Sounds like fun, I'll have to see what's going on then. I'll also have to look into the open mike nights. I used to attend them when I lived in San Francisco. Kinda how I developed my screen name.

Take care everyone!

The Wilders will be playing at the Chapter House in Ithaca (400 Stewart Ave; www.chapterhouseithaca.com) on August 25th. I have seen this group perform one other time and they are my absolute favorites and I highly recommend going to see them...well worth the travelling time. They play fiddle (Betse is AMAZING..singing, dancing...unforgettable fiddling), guitar and a few other instruments....old timey stuff and bluegrass gospel...loads of fun, tons of energy!! Come hell or highwater, I *AM* going to see them!

WYSIWYG...grab Hardi and make a day of it..it's a Thursday night!!!!

A certain Catter has shared with me via PM that he will indeed be down here that weekend. Is there any chance LF and SIS would head this way for Friday and/or Saturday night, as well?

Sleeping space for 5 in air conditioned comfort..... "certain" plus 3-4 more. LF, would your mister come (share the double bed)?

A bit more about The Wilders:

The Wilders

Date: Thursday, August 25th, 2005
Time: EARLY SHOW 8:30PM
Link: http://www.wilderscountry.com Here's Your Link!
Genre: "A HILLBILLY RIOT"—The Wilders Bring Their Honky-Tonk Fiddlin' and Crazy Old-Time Music from Kansas City to Ithaca's Chapter House Wednesday, July 14, for 8:30 p.m. Early Show
Price: $7

Kansas City's hillbilly stringband, The Wilders, is headed east: the four-member group will play their unique mix of old-time rural string band songs, vintage country classics, and southern fiddle tunes at an early show (8:30 p.m.) at the Chapter House, 400 Stewart Avenue, on Thursday, August 25.

Drawing on the good old stuff for their material, this charismatic young band has positioned itself somewhere near the place where punk and old-time music intersect. The Wilders have been featured with Iris DeMent on Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion as well as at some of the country's best music festivals, including Rockygrass in Colorado, Bill Monroe's Bean Blossom Festival, the Walnut Valley Festival, the International Bluegrass Music Association Fan Fest and many others.

"Delicious fun…They pumped up and down like Pentecostal pistons in a frenzied musical engine while picking and singing jaw-dropping versions of Settin' the Woods on Fire, Ida Red, and Sleepy-Eyed John….[As one listener said] "If this were Old Salem, they'd be burned at the stake. They play like they're possessed.'" Louisville Courier Journal

"[The Wilders] were singing about God, death and constant sorrow long before the Coen Bothers told George Clooney to dab on the pomade…spiritual, whimsical, unbridled and revelatory…" Kansas City Star

"…among the best young bands playing old-time music today….they could just about compete with James Brown when it comes to working hard at their craft. This is a string band that plays old-time and classic country with a vengeance. Loads of fun on-stage!" Ozark Folk Center

Hi, I'm usually a "lurker" here but thought I'd put in my two cents. There's tons, dare I say tons, of folk music and dance related events in Syracuse and Ithaca. Check out the Folkus Project concerts, often at the May Memorial UU Church. There's a contra dance many weekends in nearby Fayetteville (why does it seem that "catters" aren't dancers?) with great live music - and often some of the best fiddling you'll hear anywhere.

Then down in Ithaca there's the Bound For Glory radio show every Sunday night that Cornell is in session. You can listen on the web at WVBR.com, if you can't make it down for the live show. The Cornell Folk Song Club has a monthly sing, and seasonal concerts. We've got a contra dance every Friday night (see above about great music). The list goes on and on. You can look up regional folkmusic events at tedcrane.com/folkstuff. This monthly calendar/newsletter has been letting people know about central New York events for more than twenty years... but maybe you knew that.

And then there's the "Rootabaga Boogie" concerts, such as the one above. And Outasight Productions, which will be bringing Arlo Guthrie to the Ithaca State Theatre in October.

So, you may be in the wilds of Central New York, but you're not alone.

Best, Pamela

Hey Pamela!

Thanks for the information! I get to Ithaca once a month (if I'm lucky) and always find things listed in the free paper that you can find just about anywhere. I hadn't seen or heard of any of the things you mentioned, so thanks!!!!

Michelle

PS. Can you tell me where Stewart Ave is in relation to Green Street?

Ooops - hit the wrong key at the wrong time... Stewart Ave. is up the hill towards Cornell. If you're coming from downtown, Greene Street connects to State Street, Route 79 going East. Stewart Ave. is at the first traffic light up the hill. There's a couple of places there where music happens... The ABC Cafe, The Carriage House Cafe across the Street, and the Chapter House on the other corner. And then, if you go further up Stewart you'll get to Cornell and the Anabel Taylor Hall where BFG is broadcast. Upcoming summer shows include Curtis Crawford, Leo Kretzner, and Mike Agranoff. Next Falls shows sound great also!

Hope to see you sometime. Pamela

Cool beans..thanks for the directions. I was reasonably sure it was on that side of town...just didn't know quite where. We love to go to the Slovaki House for lunch and I am familiar with my way around Collegetown...just not quite all the street names!

About The Wilders. I called The Chapter House and as of right now, there is no need to call and reserve tickets and they are not selling advance tickets YET...I'll keep an eye on that.

The Chapter House, itself, holds up to 200 people. They serve over 49 different kinds of beer. There is a restaurant next door and folks are encouraged and welcomed to take food from that restaurant into The Chapter House.

All I can say is...I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!

The Wilders AND a Mudcat weekend....definately something to look forward to!

Tschuss!

I'm in Western New York - Buffalo to be exact - and travel to Central NY & northern PA quite often for work, which is singing with kids (mostly; sometimes for adults too). Anyways, I consider this whole geographic region to be "local", and would love to try to make it to a get-together.

It was suggested that I post this here as well. I hope to see some of you.

Greetings All,

Well it is that time of the year and my wife and I are again hosting an evening of traditional Irish music on Saturday, July 30th at our community in the mountains in Pennsylvania. As we did last year we will host a barbeque at 5 PM in the afternoon followed by a session in the evening at 7 PM. Our community is located just north east of Wilkes-Barre.

We've once again extended an invitation to the public to join us at the session. We've asked the public to bring with them a local food market gift card in whatever denomination they feel comfortable with as a donation. We do not expect the participating musicians to contribute anything other than their talent and passion. We will then distribute the gift cards donated to area families that are struggling through difficult economic times.

This year's event will be announced on the local public radio station, WVIA FM, so we are very excited about the prospects for an even greater turnout than last year. I have extended an invitation to the local Irish musicians through Leo Schott, a fine piper from the area. Leo joined us last year and the hopes are that he can do the same this year.

If you would like to join us please call (201) 424-6141 or email me at ed@ejsantiques.com and indicate how many will be coming. We need to know about how many musicians are coming so that we know how much food to lay in for the barbeque. Please let us know as soon as possible.

We both truly hope you can join us in this endeavor to spread Peace, Love, and Compassion through the music we all so dearly love.

Peace,
Ed

I will have to be on my way early Saturday afternoon as we are having the last community supper and gathering of the season that evening. This is often the last time we all get together until the next Spring. As some in the community are well into their eighties, of late there have been some that do not make it back in the Spring so I wouldn't want to miss the event.

I'll see you a week Friday, Lord willing.

Peace,
Ed

"... and the creek don't rise."

Well Susan, if you think there will be so much rain that the crik will rise than I hope you send it south east a little. This dry season has already caused the lilies to wilt and believe it or not the hostas are struggling a bit. I didn't think anything could effect the hostas! The Susquehanna seems so low that one could cross in spots without getting wet above the knees.

Peace,
Ed

Mmario, just be sure your snafu doesn't go FUBAR.

If you can.

Mmario has had to change his plans and the upshot is, we'll have a pretty tiny "group" for Friday night. If what you want is a chance to get away, come ahead. If what you wanted was a gathering of Mudcatters-- most of you will miss each other, as it now stands, and you might prefer to wait for another opportunity like the pre- and post-Getaway fun here, in October.

Let me know....

~Susan

As I posted in the other thread, I think all things considered, a reschedule (at least of the Friday part) makes the most sense. When we started all this, Hardi had not been able to identify our vacation dates for the year-- he has to find someone to cover the church services, and we are so far from any retired clergy that now that our dearest colleague has had a stroke, "supply" clergy are really, really hard to find. By the time he was able to find someone at all, there were only two Sundays available-- and we will be pulling out Sunday afternoon of the weekend I had hoped to see you all. I'm good and I'm prepping like mad, but to be honest, I'd be packing the camper when I'd rather be visiting with Mudcatters.

Okay...for any of you who were excited about going to see The Wilders at The Chapter House in Ithaca, NY on Thursday, August 25th....I have bad news. They will NOT, be at the Chapter House on that date.

Good news....The Wilders WILL be playing at the Trumansburg Fair on Thursday, August 25th at 7:30 along with the Redstick Ramblers (Cajun, Gypsy swing from Lousiannna) and Donna The Buffalo...a local favorite.

Then on Friday the 26th, The Wilders will be playing at the Pickin' In the Pasture Festival which runs from August 25-28th. This festival is packed with great music...read more about it here: Pickin' In The Pasture

I'll be headin' to one, if not both of these events....hope to see you there!

Michelle

Oh yeah..both events are in the state of New York. Pickin' In the Pasture takes place in a little town called Lodi...not far from Ithaca or the Watkins Glenn area....close to some very nice wineries too!!! If you plan on going to Lodi, I highly recommend a stop at the Poplar Ridge/Bagley's Winery. It's nothing fancy...but the wine and the hospitality are out of this world!

Ok...once more to the top...here's to hoping nobody goes to the Chapter House looking for the Wilders, because they won't be there!!! They will be in Trumansberg....just on the other side of the lake!

SJ, we're expecting some post-Getaway Catters here Monday night and maybe a few staying over Tuesday as well. PM for directions if you'd like to come; we have one single bed left if you want to stay over.

Hi, All,
I'm south of central NY, on the Putnam/Dutchess/Ct border, but still in reach. We have lots of folk music in the Hudson Valley, mainly through the Hudson Valley Folk Guild, which includes a concert series on alternating Friday evenings in Hyde Park, north of Poughkeepsie, and three HVFG coffeehouses each month, the nearest one to you in Kingston, NY. There is also an active coffeehouse on the R P I campus in Troy, NY, and is open to the public.

Thanks, DD. Hope to see you there, or at a spring Mudcat Gathering at our home in north central PA. (Probably March or April.) Please PM your email addy if you want updates on that as it shapes up.

Hey DD,

Are you anywhere near Amenia or Holmes (Whaley Lake)?
And where abouts in Hyde Park? Anywhere near Red Hook?

I'm in Patterson, NY, about 3 miles southeast of Whaley Lake. The concert series in Hyde Park is in the Methodist Church fellowship hall on the corner of Rt 9 and Church Rd. I've seen many really good concerts there in the past including Gordon Bok, Bill Staines, Sandy and Caroline Paton, Cathy Barton and Dave Para and Ed Trickett, Susan Trump, and Woods Tea Company, to name a few, and I think the admission cost five or six dollars as a member. Hyde Park is south of Red Hook and north of Poughkeepsie. Since my last posting, I remembered there are concerts held in the area of the Old Songs Festival site and Voorheesville associated with Andy's Front Hall in Voorheesville, NY. I hope this is helpful.

Duane.

Thanks for the extra info Duane! I used to live in that area...just outside of Lake Carmel and then later in Amenia...about half an hour from Hyde Park/Red Hook area. Next time we head that way for old time's sake, I'll have to check some of this out! Thanks for the info!!!

PS. If you ever get to Sharon CT (just over the NY/CT line), visit the Audobahn Society....last time I was there, they had owls and were doing a human/wolf study that was really interesting. They also had a great workshop about whales....I know this has nothing to do with music, but it's a great FREE way to spend the afternoon!!!! :)

Interesting you should mention Sharon, Ct, and the Audubon Center. Do you know Sandy Paton here on Mudcat? Sandy and his wife Caroline live in Sharon and own Folk Legacy Records, which they operate from their house. Their son, David, and his family, live on the Audubon site, which he maintains. I try to visit the Patons and the center whenever I'm in the area.

Duane.

No, I don't know Sandy Paton (*waving hello to Sandy in case Sandy is reading this post!). I knew there had to be a connection....great music and fascinatingly beautiful animals in a phenominal setting....the two just go together! Do you have any idea if they still have a barred owl? Is the wolf study continuing? I haven't been there in quite some time. I will say that I thought that the Audubon (sorry about the previous spelling) was the nicest site in the area...and that is speaking volumes as there are numerous stunning horse farms and surrounding country side!

I'm glad you posted to this thread...I'm thinking a road trip might be in order sometime very soon...within the month, likely towards the end of the month. :) We shall see.

Michelle
