Man, geeze o' Pete, seems here lately that Mudcat is going down more than a bus station prostitute...

Like what gives???

And does anyone have a link to the back door when the front door is locked... I lost my key when I moved....

Hmmmm. There used to be another backdoor address, with 105 where the 99 is, but I think that only works when the main forum is up, and then of course you don't need it. Maybe that was what you have somewhere. Maybe you have it saved somewhere weird? - like in the wrong folder or sumpin'? Try slightly renaming it - that oughta fool yer pudder.

Bobert, maybe you named it something wierd. Try opening Manage Bookmarks and hit Edit/Select All (Firefox) or just open "Manage Bookmarks" (Netscape). That gets you the bookmark names and their associated URLs. I don't know how you see the URLs, or if you can, in Explorer.

105 only works when the main forum is up because it IS the main forum.

Bobert, try typing a different name in.

I'm tired of this, I'm tired of not know what's going on or if anything's going to improve. I also realize that there's little chance of learning anything. I just decide to either put up with the problems and the remoteness of Max or try not to come here much. I have little chance of influencing anything.

I'm trying to care a lot less about Mudcat, because, let's face it, it's the people who really love something who get bitter and end up hating it when it doesn't live up to their expectations and they're completely powerless to affect it. When things are bad enough for long enough and there's no hope, you either start go postal or you walk away.

Or you remind yourself that Mudcat's site design and hardware are not like any other forum online, and that it somehow has allowed a uinique community to form..... I just figure it's worth being here when I can be, and when I can't-- well, I travel elsewhere. But nowhere else is Mudcat, and I always welcome a chance to return for another stay.

Fair enough, but a little bit of information about what is going on would be a nice start. It's not so much the fact that it keeps crashing - I could live with that a lot better if only I knew WHY!

A lot of us have been asking for some time what is happening and what we can do to help, and there continues to be no response. Lately I have seen posts from a lot of regular Mudcatters - good natured people who hardly ever complain, and many of whom have been here for years and contributed a lot - starting to get really impatient and browned off because we are being ignored. That is the biggest issue right now, I think.

I don't feel ignored -- every time it crashes, someone --presumably Max or Jeff -- scrambles around and reboots and debugs it. That's the attention I want! :D

The Mudcat of today is carrying many more transactions and messages than it ever has, compared to just a couple of years ago. There's many more members, and more trip being bandied about.

The volume these messages require in order to be databased is not trivial, and the load of the increased traffic is not trivial either.

Susan. I see no reason to belive the hardware (reliability aside) is unlike any other online forum. If anything there is probably more of it than most people running from home have (I think there are 3 machines - 2 web servers and 1 database server) but really that provides extra cover - some wouldn't be able to afford more than one server.

The site design is unique to Mudcat but the origns of the forum are not and I can't believe it's the only forum that hasn't developed somewhere from the same Cold Fusion Tutorial. There certainly used to be a few around that still looked like Mudcat's help.

The software combination used here is perhaps unusual. I did post my thoughts on that here a month or so back.

As for the big problem at the moment, my best guess is a nackered database server although perhaps something as simple as overheating.

The "problem" is that a wonderful young man with a family to support and a life to live is trying his very best to keep this site going. Aside from the occasional endowment (you know who you are and I thank you on behalf of all of us), he keeps this thing going on his own dime and at the cost of time away from other things. We all owe him a debt of gratitude and the occasional buck or two.

Thanks Max.

All the best,

Mick

WYS said "unique community." It IS unique. All communities are unique, and those of us here are in this one. People who can't see uniqueness are the same guys who know one chord and play it exclusively through every song or tune in your session because they are essentially clueless and like being that way. Saves them the work of paying attention and adjusting accordingly.

Notice something: everybody's guessing the reasons for the recent several months' worth of problems. We may even end up having an argument about what's wrong or what isn't wrong. "I think it's this." "No, you're wrong -- it's this!" "Well, you're an idiot, because if it were that..." Then later on: "Let's throw some money at it!" And the inevitable sprinkling of "Aside from not telling us anything, Max is doing everything he can. I KNOW he is," and "Mudcat: Love It Or Leave It!"

Discussions like this do no good other than providing an opportunity to vent. We don't really know anything. Mudcat is a little boat in the blue water of the toilet of the internet, and somebody has flushed. We are circling... [and I've got to go because I just lapsed into parody mode, and someone is going to murder me for what I'm about to write.]

As I said, I just figure it's worth being here when I can be, and when I can't-- well, I travel elsewhere. But nowhere else is Mudcat, and I always welcome a chance to return for another stay.

If your mileage varies, and you see a chance to have a crabbyassed argument over it, whoop-dee-effing-doo. Maybe you're having a low-testosterone day; so sorry!

Or-- you may just be advertising an addiction and a need to UNPLUG.

So-- uplug yourself!

If the person who knows what the problem is, tells us what the problem is and asks for donations to help, it would be a lot more productive?

If the person who knows what the problem is, doesn't tell us what the problem is, and then a.n. other asks for donations, someones having a laugh.

Well Amos old buddy I don't find it quite as simplistic as that, you see those guys that scramble round and reboot for you [why do they have to keep doing it?] are fast asleep when I and other UK Mudcatters log on in the AM here. So when those little Mudelves are up and around and rubbing the sleep out of there eyes, it is alreadylunchtime over here. If you get more complaints from this side of the pond it's because it affects us more. Some paranoid folks might even think that Max or someone turned it off last thing at night, and turned it back on in the morning, sorta like taking the phone off the hook to avoid nuisance callers ;~)
We recognise the fact that Max puts more than 100% into the Cat, and it sort of looks like a bit of help might not go amiss, and that's what I and others are offering, a bit of help to lighten his load. If he was to say "I need a new XXXX server to improve the service, and it will cost $XXXX, then that would give us something to aim at, and a reason for the Cat's hiccups.
That's how I see it from here Amos.

Giok:

I couldn't agree with you more that promoting for help and providing information on the situation would be preferable, from my viewpoint.

But as I have no visibility into Max' thinking, situation or resources, and no auhtority therein in any case, I have to let him roll his own way, right?

Sure, I'd like to understand the situation bette; but I don't feel owed anything.

Been there and done that a few times haven't we? Now CH, you know Max can't do what you have suggested many times because the Café is charitable... not subject to taxes... not hiring lawyers and accountants... not selling ad space or anything else.

As for $, I am amazed that Max has been able to keep this site up since the last major "begging" which was done ON HIS BEHALF by concerned and grateful 'Cats. And, I don't mind sending a few bucks or bidding in the auction or buying swag.... I've done so. And I will again.

Like Giok, I am sure there are many 'Cats who would like to see a figure set. I WAS one in past fund raising drives. However, I think I MIGHT know why Max can't do this. Simply, if he says "X" bucks and we put up and, for whatever reason in the near future, something doesn't work out, Max will bear the brunt of any resentment or blame.

Anyway. I just had some financial downtime due to illness and I am tapped. Bt, I know I can find a bit to send and I am going to do so tomorrow.

May I be so bold as to recommend that the rest of the 'Cats out there reflect upon what you think you can donate and do so post haste.... pun intended. Need I say that no donation is too small?

Clint.... I am throwing in an extra $10 (Canuck bucks. Hey, it's still ten to me.) on your behalf.

AND... please post that you are on board with this... it is NOT self-laudatory to post that you are donating as long as you don't say how much you are donating or how many t-shirts you are buying or how much you are bidding in the auction... your post shows that each and every donation is truly going to do some good... COLLECTIVELY.

C'mon guys. it's time again to help ourselves.

Right now, all I know is that over the last 10 times I tried the front door, it was locked 5 times... That ain't good fir any website. 'er business, 'er bedroom fir that matter...

Jus' tell us what the heck is goin' on... We're adults... We can take it...

Oops... my bad... but... does ad revenue make you a taxable corporation in the States? Many "charitable" tax exempt entities exist here in Canada but still generate revenue through advertising in their publications. I used to buy ad space in the "The Shamrock Leaf", the newsletter of the Irish Canadian Cultural Association of New Brunswick and they didn't pay any taxes on my dime.

Why not inquire direcly as to the problem? Rather than beating around the bush. It would appear to be a case of not enough bandwidth as it is acting like a yoyo. Either way, $ appears to be the logical answer.
For Gods' sake, let's get to the crux of the problem rather than bantying about like a couple (or more) of retarded roosters.

Squawk!! I resemble that remark.

Okaaaay then. In a nutshell...

Why would a lad who builds and consults on websites not institute the "fixes" that are obvious? And, what are they anyway?

Why do I need to know the tech stuff?

Why wouldn't I just donate what I feel I can and/or what I feel this site is worth to me?

Why does it have to have a collective donation cap?

Anyway... I am sending in a few bucks. Anyone with me?

But, as many have said, Max does this as a labour of love and I for one am grateful to him for it. I have made many good new friends in "real life" as a result of joining the 'Cat.

So ease up on Max some of you and cut him some slack. If he needs our help I'm sure he'll say so.

I think 'begging' is an inappropriate description altogether. I contribute by Direct Debit (or is it Standing Order? I get the two confused!) each month; a very small sum, and I look at it as being reasonable 'for services rendered'. In fact, if I paid a realistic amount according to how much I get from 'Cat, I'd be paying a LOT more. I don't even really like referring to it as 'donation' but I'll accept that, as I wouldn't want to complicate Max's taxation situation.
