Subject: BS: what did ya do today?
From: number 6
Date: 01 Aug 05 - 11:18 PM

Today is August 1st, 2005. A holiday here in New Brunswick.

What did I do today?

Went out about 7:30 a.m. and took some pics around the harbour. Started to rain so I went home .. had another cuppa coffee. Loaded the pics, was quite surprised how they turned out. I'm actually rather impressed.

Went down to St. George at 10:30 to a very exceptional nursery. Picked up a couple of Holly shrubs for a friend. Drove back to Saint John. Planted the shrubs in the rain. Holly is not a good plant if you live by the ocean. The salt air eventually, and quite rapidly kills it. I learned the hard way. Anyway, this person lives inland so they should be ok. Hung out with the friend for a bit. Drank coffee, talked about nothing in particular, mainly how the weather has been pretty dismal lately.

Went to the weekly bluegrass jam tonoite. Realized I really suck playing bluegrass guitar. I'm gonna perseavere. I'm still 1 step away from being kicked out. I'm Rather new at playing bluegrass. Got involved to improve my timing.

Anyway, tomorrow is another day. What did you do today?

sIx

I went out to check the mail. Nothing. Not even a flyer. Thought it must be Sunday--but I couldn't figure out how I got THAT screwed up that I thought Saturday had happened twice. I have been wondering all day why no one seems to be around. Now I know. It's a holiday. Thanks sIx.

Today I got up early and puttered around the house....watered the garden, played with my critters, emptied out some of my car (violins don't belong in the car Michelle...geez) and called my best girlfriend and sang Happy Birthday to her over the phone. I met her about an hour later and we had a girl's day out. We went to the *gasp* mall where she used some of her birthday gift certificates to get her nails done, pick out some of her most favorite fancy soaps, window shopped and went out for lunch. We chatted and talked, laughed and discussed the year that has gone by. It's been pretty eventful for both of us. It was just a nice day out.

I came home, cut up some zuchinni from the garden, added some green peppers, mushrooms and spaghetti sauce and ta-da...dinner! I spent the rest of the evening doing laundry, playing backgammon, listening to the whir of a fan and PMing with one of my favorite Mudcat friends. :)

It's been a lovely day...I wish it would go on just a bit longer.

Michelle

Well, I spent most of the day taking repeated cat naps. I got off the state ferry at 5:30 this morning having spent a couple of days in a town about 100 miles from here. Great time, lots of music. Not much sleep in three nights so other than baking a loaf of bread and reconstituting a bottle of dried milk I didn't do much else but sleep. archy, my coal cat, was in heaven sleeping on my lap.

The sun shone today so I should have mowed the lawn...

I was going to clean the balls of my mice, but I thought I might get in trouble with the union, yesterday being a holiday. I was going to mow the lawn, weed the rhubarb, and the like, but it rained. I was going to sweep, mop, dust, and the like, but it was too muggy. I was going to clean up some files, catch up on my technical reading, re-write my resumé, and the like, but I wasn't in the right frame of mind. Gee I'm tired. I think I'll just relax today.

Wow that's about the way my day went too gnu. Must be the humidity! I did get around to cleaning out the car and finishing the laundry though - but I just gotta ask - why do you clean the balls of your mice??? Must be so stressful, for you and them. Why not just keep the cage clean?

And btw why is Aug 1 a civic holiday in Canada anyway?? Don't tell me the powers that be wanted to honour Lammas (traditional pagan festival of the first harvest)?!? Or is it just that we Canucks deserve all the long weekends we can get in the summer??

Don't the balls on your mice pick up lint when you drag their balls across the pad? Mine do. And then they stick and hang up on the left or right. I cursor all I want and can't get the little buggers to move. So, I remove their balls, clean the lint from the balls and from the little wheels, replace their balls, and I can cursor away.

Nothing like clean, lint free balls.

Turned a speaker stand someone was throwing out into a work stand for my bike. Cleaned the kitchen. failed to figure out why the rubber plant looks so unhealthy. Will be going Dancing in the gardens if it doesn't rain too much this evening.

The ball on your mouse has never gotten "gummed up" with lint?. Oh, you must have an optical mouse. On mine (I have two mice - two PC's), the lint, dust, dirt, whatever, builds up on the little wheels. I have to remove the balls and scrape the lint off of wheels with a small standard screw driver. Of course, ya gotta be careful not to let any lint get into the "guts" of the mice. Also, I clean the little rubber balls with a cloth and isopropyl alcohol before replacing them.

Am I the only one who scrapes dirt off the little wheels and washes their balls? Nobody else's pad gets dusty?

Why not just get optical mouses, gnu? Saves a lot of hassle, and they work great. I never use a mouse pad myself. I hate them.

Oh come on now. You guys are just messin wit me head. Obviously, most of you have got PC's. Most probably have a mouse. Most of these mice have a heavy or weighted rubber ball that moves the little rollers inside the mouse that translate the mouse movement to the cursor. Don't you ever find that your cursor is "stuck" on the screen? And, you've got to wiggle your mouse or reset it on the mouse pad to get the cursor where you want it? Nobody else gets sticky balls?

hate mouse pads. destest them.

But yes - occasionally, in the interests of hygiene if nothing else - one should clean the balls of your mouse. Occasionally I have even had to use scissors to remove hair that has wound itself around some of the internal workings.

CC... Optical mouse? Me? Spend coin? You oughtta know me better than that. Besides, I like washing my balls. When I play solitaire after a good scrubbing, thay are responsive to every little movement, so I can confidently play much faster. And, when I try to get control in the game of hearts, I never slip up and get it up the ying-yang.

Spend money when I can keep using my old equipment? Balls to that.

$10 US for a conventional mouse versus $40 for an optical. That's a difference equal to roughly seven sets of guitar strings. I need guitar strings worse than I need faster, smoother, lint-free mousing.

And what I did today was the same thing I do every day (or so it seems): Cut up fallen trees, put tree pieces in truck, drive truck down driveway to road, unload tree pieces onto shoulder of road making already huge pile even larger, cuss hurricanes, drive truck back up driveway, repeat.

Gnu ... I bought an optical mouse at Staples (on the bargain table) last month for $11.00.

Bruce ... slick, very slick. But it's a good one!

Daylia ... as far as I know August 1st isn't a civic holiday, then maybe it is. In Newfoundland/Labrador they don't have August 1st off. They take the first Wednesday in August off for Regatta Day .... but, this is the catcher ... if it rains that day, they schedule it for the next day, and if it rains then ... well they keep rescheduling until good weather arrives ... causes for some confusion in the business world.

Looked at mudcat which was full of funny stuff , political diatribes and truely sad news.

I pulled a portable pool pump and filter out of the shed and set it up under the pool slide. It now can shoot a curtain of water in a graceful arc or spew a stream as far as 40 feet. When my wife got home we all went in and the kids played going through the tunnel of water for about an hour.

Went to the island and attended the annual Firefighters Picnic.

Six of us made fried chicken, marinated green beans, baked salmon, pesto pasta salad, potato salad and orange cupcakes with ginger. As usual there were almost 500 people there to support our volunteer firefighters.

Same guy scooping ice cream for the kiddie cones for the last 30 years. Outside stage with a great sound system. So much good music! One set after another. Lots of dancing. All friends and family. Kegs of beer and bottles of cider and official designated drivers. Barbeque for those who didn't pack a picnic. Juice bar too.

Went home, lit the citronella candles and crashed into bed.

Woke up early in the morning, drank my coffee and went for a swim.

I think its finally summer.

One thing about having such a short summer. You have to pack as much fun into it as you possibly can.

I prepared for another job interview which will be tomorrow.

Some context: The weather here was about 95 degrees F, 95% humidity, and air quality officially deemed "unhealthy." I don't own a car. I walked to the grocery store and, on my way back, had an acute asthma attack, probably precipitated by vehicle emissions (yuk). I put on a face mask, came home and crashed on the sofa. Then I read Mudcat. The latter was fun. ;-)

This morning I walked the dog, came inside and watched hubby get ready for work, sat down at my machine to get back to Mudcat. YESTERDAY, however, hubby took off, we drove into Austin, and actually signed all closing papers in sale of our "old" house!!!!!. We married in Aug., 1966, and we paid rent until Aug.,1972. Then we started paying mortgage. Several months ago we got a "cash-out" loan for about 60% of our (old) house value, paid flat cash for our "new" place. The closing paid off the "cash-out" loan and put money in our pocket. We owe nothing on our home except the annual taxes--half the rate in this county as the one we used to live in, and, because the house so much lower cost, that rate on less money. Hubby stood outside the Title Co. office breathing deep and smiling for quite a while. I enjoyed watching him do it.    Tw

"Today" has taken about three weeks to do, but we're finished with it now. My son from my wife's first marriage and his son, my wife Ruth and I have been constructing a 10' x 14' screened-in pergola with a pale green plexiglass roof in our side yard. It has a green, patterned outdoor carpet on the floor and will seat as many as 14 people at two tables. Or just, me and my wifey, when we want to enjoy sitting outside without being feasted upon by mosquitos. We wanted to finish it in time for a gathering of the Messengers, a few other musicians, family and friends for a cookout and all day sing in a couple of weeks. It turned out beautifully, and the whole process of creating it from our heads, with plenty of laughter, soul music and rhythm and blues pumping from a portable CD player was worth the effort in itself. I fell and smashed up one leg pretty badly, but it is slowly healing now. It's gone from black and blue, to green to a sickly pale yellow and I have a discernible ankle again.

Everything should be in good working order by the time the day rolls around.

Jerry

Went out last nite to see Steve Forbert ... We were quite surprised how much better he is live, solo with an accoustic guitar than his recordings.

As usual, I unplugged everything to engage in fulfilling creative work. Then plugged in everything and engaged in mostly futile attempts to drive the wolf from the door (where he is baying ever more loudly and insistently). Took the usual potions and motions to cope with the entropy gradually encroaching on an aging physiology. Checked in with the few people in my life, family and friends, who are very dear to me and are mostly far away. Made the usual vain attempts over the phone to soothe the anxieties of an elderly mother. By evening said the hell with it all and made a pretty good salad and got lost in a book until sleep arrived to knit the ravell'd sleave of care.

Today we picked veggies in the garden, selected the best ones, made a nice lunch, delivered the vegetables to the county fair, went for a ride, stopped for some ice cream and went home. We worked around the house, took a nap, woke up to the new kitten sliding down my leg, took note of the newest kitten wound...this one starting midway up my thigh and extending down beyond my inner knee...made dinner mostly from the garden (cucumbers, corn on the cob, squash and chicken) and relaxed. I love the weekend.

Took a shower. Had an omelet, half an English muffin, & coffee for breakfast. Vacuumed the apartment, and mopped the kitchen & bathroom floors; dusted most of the visible horizontal surfaces. Had a corned beef sandwich, a carrot, and two kiwi fruits for lunch. Spent more time than usual on the Internet. Pleasant phonecall from my brother in Arizona. Read the Washington Post Weekly and browsed in a book on Yiddish. Listened to some of Kipling's songs. Took the trolley to Mass. Av. station for a date with a fuckbuddy, but he stood me up; however, I studied the tune to "The Night before Larry Was Stretched" on the way there & back. Dinner was chicken livers, kasha, salad, wine, & crumbcake. Had a sherry while listening to some more Kipling. Expect to have a Bianco vermouth & read some Orwell before going to sleep.

hmmmm....day of rest? Got up on the roof and cleaned all the debris from between the shakes with a sharp stick and a broom, then cleaned out the gutters. Still have the front gutter to do, but I did manage to catch Good Rockin Tonight: The Legacy of Sun Records, for the third time in less than a week and enjoyed it as much as the first.

Also last Friday I finally got to meet my first Mudcatters in person. Frogprince and his wife dropped in for a visit while on a tour of the Island. Delightful! Although I must admit it was the first time I've been stumped by a request in the English language. He asked for a "dat pap" and I had no idea what he meant. My daughter finally explained that it was a diet pop. LOL

Pulled the frets on my Godin electric 5 string bass, filled the slots with ebony veneer, and now I wait for the glue to dry so that I can smooth the fingerboard. Instant fretless, that is, after a set-up. Later (when I find some like coloured rosewood) I'll remove the postion dots too, and fill the holes with rosewood plugs.

Next up: train Rosie The Wonder Dog to do back massages.

Threw out a bunch of stuff. My dad's out of town and my mother's depression (a side effect of her anti-rejection meds) has lifted for the time being so we're cleaning house like madwomen. I filed papers all day long and then helped her go through some of her sewing stuff. We have piles of stuff to give away and piles more to finish sewing and either use or give away. We finally threw out the pillows that belonged to my grandfather (who has been dead for 28 years) and some tableclothes, etc., that were my other grandmother's and are so old they're falling apart. We're getting ready to box up books tonight and send them back to my brother for him to deal with, since he doesn't live here any more. Then, we can get rid of his horrible cheap bookcases.

I love seeing clutter go out the door.

It was a foine night, the stars were out, and ecopella, the choir, was rehearsing in our common room, as they do most Monday nights. We all brought food, the carnivores had their barbie, i made jugs of sangria, we had a fire, and have been standing around eating, laughing and reminiscing for some hours. On 15th October we will have a huge party to celebrate 10 years of living here - tonight, we planned it all. any catters who read this are welcome to come!! just let me know in advance so i can cater!

I am feeling realy smug with myself.
On Monday as I was driving rom Blairgowrie (Perthshire) to Edinburgh we picked up two hitch hikers. They were showing a card "Edinburgh" So I thiught easy that going to the Festival jump in. However they were actualy going to Newcastle to fly back to Prague on Wednesday. Well that was about all the info we got out of them other than they had spent the summer fruit picking to earn some money.
We dropped them off at the A1 the road to ewcastle and headed into the city where we spent 5 hours of fun watching the street theatre on the Royal Mile.
When we got back to the car and drove of my wife notice something on the back seat, it was a small bag! It was not ours. Inside it was

a mobile phone,
some Chezck money 150+ krona
various cards library, insurance contact etc.
A passport
£890.00 in notes
about £5.31 in coin
what looked like a diamond engagement ring
oh yes and a rather nasty looking knife.
Needless to say we pawned the ring and the phone and spent the lot on a really good night out!

No we didnt we returned it to the police who believe they can get it back to them.

An interesting assortment of things, starting off badly, but it got better as it went along.

First, I leaned too far over the bath and ended up falling in, banging my head on the wall. I now have a big lump on the back of my head to show for it.

Then, I locked my keys in the house, and actually managed to reach in from the window with a long pole and extract them from a hook in the kitchen on the other side of the room - bloody miraculous!

Finished up tonight on the James Craig at Darling Harbour in an excellent shanty session with Danny Spooner and about 30 people all belting out shanties. That was the best bit!

It's not as bad it looks ... that's what the vet told me. He split a pad on his back paw sometime on Sunday while running around .... he hasn't been limping but I noticed yesterday he was obsessively licking it ... it was pretty nasty looking, a crack exposing raw meat ... anyway the vet said it wasn't infected ... just to keep him from licking, let the air at it and make sure it stays clean and just keep him off his feet for a while ... which isn't too hard, he's a greyhound and besides his weekly 5 minute run he just lays around the rest of the week. This breed of dog, suprisingly are very lazy.

I appreciate your concern bobad,

I haven't done much yet today but eat breakfast.

Yesterday, however, I met with the Mayor, did a performance appraisal on a staff member, attended a workshop on the new fiscal year that starts October 1, went to the dentist for a checkup and cleaning, answered some phone calls, and weeded in the back yard. Oh, yeah, went to the farmers' market, too. And prepared a presentation for the staff on how to intimidate people; I'll give that next Monday. And some other stuff.

Reclined under a feather duvet topped by two nicely-acclimating cats... one a longtime resident and one a new arrival, their first really close snuggle... (me) listening to Captain Bob Singleton's crossing of Afrique, via MP3, in the up-too-early sunny sunrise. Coming out from under, I see we had a dusting of pretty snow in the night!

I woke up early, all snuggly and warm under 3 quilts and looked out the window and watched it snow. While I was trying to wake up, I listened to my husband who was playing his guitar downstairs. I showered, got dressed, made breakfast, packed lunches and went to school early. The next 3 hours were spent working on a project, then it was off to class. Afterwards I paid bills and ran errands, got groceries and I am now trying to get the fire in the woodstove to cooperate. :) A busy but productive day. If anyone wants to come over and help put the groceries away, I wouldn't have too many objections!!!

Had a good day... went shopping with my wife and finished my Christmas shopping (boos and hisses gratefully accepted.) Cleaned my office and found all sorts of interesting stuff, none of it moldy. Listened to a "random music" CD and gathered together loose cassettes in order to get back to burning a CD of the Messengers, talked with my main man Joe and made plans for singing together tomorrow night, had son and daughter-in-law stop by in the evening and served beef stew I made it the slow cooker, yesterday.

I love days like these... absolutely nothing of any major import. I'll take 'em, any day.

I love those days of "absolutely nothing of any import", too Jerry. Sometimes, on those days, I stop in my tracks and think,"Wooh! isn't this great ?" and I hang on to the feeling as much as I can. It's very tempting sometimes to wish your life away, waiting for some big and wonderful event to happen, when, in reality, This Is It, right now. The "saying of the day" on my desk calendar today says:
"Anyone who can say every day 'Today, I lived' is truly happy."

Today (now, actually, yesterday) we had to be up early, tidying up a bit for the first visit of my daughter's Physics tutor - she is doing her A level course by herself, because it didn't fit in to her college timetable. He turned out to be a thoroughly friendly and helpful fellow, who I'm sure wouldn't have minded a bit if the place *had* been untidy, and I think they will get along fine.

My working life is spent in an ever-changing mixture of several part-time jobs, teaching drama and languages and doing translations, and I had a call yesterday offering me a new job, starting in January, which will replace a contract one elsewhere which is coming to an end in December - so great news.

LilyFestre: I envy you your snow ! We certainly had a lot of frost here in the UK, though, and it was lovely going into town with all the festive lights in the trees and that lovely, damp, smokey smell in the air that only seems to happen on November evenings.

From the start of the evening on, my day was decidedly less than "normal". In the space of two hours, I was an operating theatre assistant, decked out in surgical green garb, gloves, hat and mask, closely followed by being a bored audience member, grabbing my coat as a left my seat, then with just enough time to kit myself out as a Goth - black lipstick, scarey hairstyle, heavy black eyelids,.... I have walk-on parts in a play, "Bums on Seats". Great luxury of not having any lines to remember, just being in the right place at the right time (and not bumping into the furniture, hopefully) and all the fun of the costume changes and the back-stage cameraderie. It's not an everyday occurrence for me - but oh, how I wish it was, and I relish every opportunity.

Very glad this thread is still going. It's so interesting to see how varied our days are.

Well, I'm in the process of packing up to move down the hill one block. (The museum I have lived in for a total of more than 12 years is scheduled to begin renovation early next month and I'm told that I don't want to be here when they start taking down the plaster.)

I have three pockets to pitch to: one to keep and take down the hill with me, one to donate to Salvation Army and Friends of the Library and one that will go out with the garbage. My plan and hope is that what I take with me will be the smallest pocket.

Now, however, I have come down with a juicy cold ao I'm slowed down. Am baking bread but that's about the extent of my householdy chores today. Did take Meggie, my little Cairn, on a longish walk though.

Hung out here on the Mudcat for a while.

Did some chores in the house.

On the mudcat some more.

Played the guitar for some time.

Went over to some friends for supper ... had a hell of a good laff.

Ann and I took the hounds out for a late nite walk .. cold was way too much so we didn't go to far.

Now I'm back on the Mudcat listening to a Nick Drake c.d.

Made my way downstairs in the early morning, settled into my recliner with the cat, and watched the sun rise while my husband played his guitar. Later in the day, I packed us a picnic lunch which we enjoyed in a small park. We continued driving north along Senaca Lake until we reached our favorite winery where we shared a bottle of wine with the owner and his fiance on the deck overlooking the vineyard and lake. Other folks joined us for small bits of time and left with others to take their place. Just returned home from dinner at our favorite Mexican restaurant. It's been a wonderfully, relaxing day.

Packed the P-Vine up and got the heck away from this house/constrction site... Drove 130 miles to Richmond... Had lunch at Joe's Inn in the Fan District... Then drove to the "Five Little Azalea Farm" north of Richmond where we bought about $800 worth of plants for a little over $300, put the rear seats down in her Camry station wagen and laid 'um down on their sides and packed the poor Toyota to the ceiling...

Then drove home, stopping at the 7-11 in Gordonsville for a 10 minute nap, with a danged criptomeria sticking me in the armpit the entire way home... But beat the heak outta construction work... Sho nuff did...

Plus, Joe's Inn makes a great veggie sub... Hasn't changed in the 30 some years I been going there...

Went home and rested for a while, then went out and bought a new living room set and some DVDs for the grandkids and for us. Along the way I hooked a new receiver. Well, it was a busy weekend of wonderful food, nice wine, pleasant company, and a bit too much Aussie heat - but overall, a good one.

On Saturday I rounded up all the plants I have been collecting to take my son for a belated birthday present, including a couple of big decorative indoor ones and some herbs I potted from my garden - as well as a couple of bottles of wine. We had yummy fajitas that he made, then over the course of the evening we put away all the wine, while he tinkered with computers and showed me his new Canon printer which also burns and labels CDs. He printed me out a lovely photo of my grandson Max. The quality is quite exceptional! Stayed there overnight.

Sunday morning, it was blueberry bagels and a trip to a fair across the road from his place. Also spent time with Max. It was very hot and I got a bit sunburned. Bought George another indoor plant, then sat around at his place and had king prawns with seafood sauce and crusty bread rolls for lunch.

Came home mid afternoon and pottered in the garden. including giving it a good watering. Because of water restrictions, we can only water before 10am and after 5pm on Wednesday and Sunday, so I have to make it count when I do it. Then went over to John and Dale Dengate's place to practise some songs we are doing at the National, and picked on their "leftovers" which are always pretty darned good leftovers - that's if you can call smoked salmon and all manner of baked veges and salad and crumbly Mersey Valley cheese etc etc leftovers - all washed down with a nice red or two.

By the time I went to bed I was well and truly ready for it - still a touch of the sun, I think - and slept in a bit this morning. Now it's another stinking hot day (currently 33c) and it's autumn. I wish it would hurry up and start cooling down a bit!

Jenny (hot and bothered in Sydney)

Not much in the morning, cos I had it free. In the afternoon, I went in to my work experience placement and tried to keep children under control while making model bridges. We had a couple of mechanical engineers come in yesterday and they asked the kids to make model bridges out of Artstraws and masking tape. My group decided to start from scratch with theirs today because the one they did yesterday was more tape than straws! After that, while the children had PE, I helped with filing work and mounting, as did the other work experience girl, Zoe, who finishes on Friday. I've got another 9 weeks (including Easter holiday) to do, unless I find a job in the meantime. Mind you, I don't want to find a job at the moment cos I'm loving the placement too much!!

Anyway, once I got home, I watched a bit of telly (Friends, yay!!) then went up to my room, supposedly to watch more telly, but in reality to fall asleep. Mind you, before I did I got a phone call from a friend I hadn't heard from for ages, so I chatted to her for a little bit first. I woke up again at about 9pm, after which I fed and came on to the computer. I played a few games on Neopets, then came over on to here and posted to this thread.

So, that's what I did today.
