Subject: BS: A crazy new love (obsession). Chicita From: annamill Date: 24 Sep 05 - 03:52 PM Now, I hate spiders! Well, at least I don't like them around me. I guess I should say I'm scared to hell of spiders. BUT.. at work I have found an amazing girl. I call her Chicita (little girl) and I have been watching her for weeks now. I won't let the grounds keeper near her. I took him and showed her to him and tried to tell him, in my best non-spanish, not to kill her when he trimmed the bushes. He seemed to understand, looked at me like I was nutz, but agreed. I have watched her tine mate, about 1/4 her size try his best to get close and I'm pretty sure he made it. He seems to have disappeared tho. Seems Chicita eats her mate after mating. She's eating like crazy and getting fat. It is her season to lay her eggs and I think she's getting there. The thing is, I have never seen such a beautiful spider. She's silver (a shiny silver) and has black markings and her long legs are banded with silver and black. If she was a piece of jewelry she'd sell quick. Here is a picture and some words about her. I guess I'm not the only one enamoured by her. Chicita I know. Get a life. Love, Annamill |

When the babies hatched they were everywhere and the egg casing landed in the mailbox - lots more babies there. This year there is a single web in a nearby shrub with a huge spider in the center - her baby I hope. Enjoy her, Annamill. |

Subject: RE: BS: A crazy new love (obsession). Chicita From: Ebbie Date: 24 Sep 05 - 11:53 PM Has anyone ever read why spiders and some others eat their hapless mates? Does it have to do with protein or other nutrients perhaps? Interesting that that link mentioned that far more males than females survive into adulthood. Surely that is unusual? |

I can hardly wait for the Autumn mornings when the mist clings to their lovely webs. Its just starting now. My favorite time of year! The webs of orb spiders are the best! |
Subject: RE: BS: A crazy new love (obsession). Chicita From: annamill Date: 25 Sep 05 - 01:36 PM Dianavan, her web is a masterpiece. The only reason I didn't mention it earlier was because I have come to expect masterpieces from spiders. I don't normally find spiders beautiful, No, usually scary and gross. I mean they suck the juices out of still living victims. Yuch! But Chiquita (friend told me I was spelling it wrong) is beautiful. Don't get me wrong, she still sucks the living juices out of her victims, but somehow her beauty transcends the gross! I wish her well. I mean, instead of squished. Love, Annamill |
